D3 Decisions: Running up the score

Re: D3 Decisions: Running up the score

A little slice of life my friends.....

Last week Elmira took an 8-0 lead into the 3rd period against Potsdam ( the same Potsdam that RIT filled in by 16 or so a month or so ago)

Elmira took just 6 shots on net in the 3rd with one bouncing off a defenders stick and into the net.No attempt was made to run up the score out of respect for the opposing players and coaching staff.

To quote Kingston Ontario's own Don Cherry... " It's the Canadian way"

Oh .. and where is the Elmira coach from....... Look it up..

Thats the way .. and the only way...

Welcome to the board, although I think you're 5.4.Fighting, just using a different name so you can get more posts on the board;) .

Anyways, I'll give you something to think about and I'm off of this topic. I was at the Pots/RIT game. Everything was quiet in the 3rd until Potsdam started taking dirty penalties. Check out how many pims they took. Then tell me what your beloved don cherry would do in that situation (Brawl). Then check out what RIT players scored on those PPs.

Call it classless or whatever....

But Whats the deal with Elmira having their leading scorer on the ice midway through the 3rd period ON THE POWER PLAY with an 8 goal lead. What would you call that, and what would don cherry do then. Is that the Canandian way still?

Personally, I don't have a problem either way. Play the game hard all the time, no matter what the score is. If you don't like it play tennis or get a better team. Why penalize the stronger teams.

It should be interesting coming down the stretch for the top team getting ready for the playoffs. Not to many competitive games left (on paper) for the them.

Re: D3 Decisions: Running up the score

Ha Ha .. " Five for Fighting" in disguise. i must admit i know of and admire the legend and though it may appear as though we are one and the same, we are not.

You make some valid points RIT Fan about chippiness and especially the lack of opponents for some of the top teams going down the stretch and perhaps this factors into things...especially as it relates to the chance of a lopsided score occurring.

However i believe you can practice your power play without pulling the trigger in 8 goal blowout. The power play is all about puck movement and overloading an area to create an odd man opportunity and i would be willing to bet thats what Elmira was working on. You have to be able to do this on a regular basis in order to be ready for when the time comes. I have, however, been told by those close to the team that they were instructed not to score !
Hey what happened to those Crazy Korner Krew guys... They've been pretty quiet lately???

Manhattanville 3 goals in the last 3 and a half minutes when leading 14-0. Look at Princeton.

As a coach, when my team was up by 5 or more goals, I would make the kids do the "everyone had to touch the puck" before shooting. However, if there was a penalty, especially a "dirty" one, all bets were off until we scored. You want to take a cheap shot? We'll respond on the scoreboard.

If you're talking mites or squirts, (or girls 10 and under) that's fine, hopefully you're not talking collegiate hockey (or even high school for that matter).

Re: D3 Decisions: Running up the score

Hey creasedonkey, no comments on Princeton. I didn't think so. Once a loser always a loser. Throw the towel in again pal. Coaching could never help a person like you......

CHG, all I can say is that you must be ****ed that the coaches don't seem to be heeding your advice. And because I'm a lady, I won't say what I think about you in the forum... pal... Hahahaha... I coach, *******...

Mad? Actually, it's much too easy to push your buttons - I'm having fun!

Sportsmanship doesn't end at any age group. Wasn't sportsmanship discussed during one of the NFL playoff games?

Re: D3 Decisions: Running up the score

You did start it with the whine thing right? Back yourself up first when you make comments. Don't refer to nonsensical crap! Love...CanHockGuy. This is fun!

Again, I find it entertaining that you took the whining comment personally. I don't recall directing it toward anyone in particular.

Did I say sportsmanship ends at a certain age? No, I didn't. What I do believe is that sportsmanship should be displayed in sometimes different but appropriate ways. It is an interesting debate about differing philosophies, that's all. We all have our notions about what sportsmanship is and isn't - and mine isn't the same as yours. I compete in three different women's team sports from recreational to professional and my daughter competes in four. We both can say that our teammates share our same philosophy in each of these sports at every level. So I can't say that I understand where anyone is coming from on the "running up the score issue." Like I've said, I'd rather be beaten by 15 goals than to know another team didn't play upto their potential because they thought we couldn't handle it - that's to me is poor sportsmanship, because it tells me that you don't have any respect for me as an athlete. So, I'm with all those who said you get out there and play every shift, every period, every game to the best of your ability. If you win by 15, so be it. If you lose by 15, so be it and try harder the next time.
