and refer to nbound for mine! According to the place I work Fun is defined as making your own decisions, even if they get overturned, therefore...they are deciding to play hockey...therefore they are having fun!
Athletes should compete as hard as they can every shift, every period, every game. Anything less would be disrespectful to their opponents.
How in the H-E double hockey sticks do you call that fun?
Succintly said! I know it is "tastes great; less filling", but you play and you play hard.
If anything the Bowdoin score is unnecessary because they aren't in the same league. If the coach for Bowdoin doesn't make an adjustment next year and try to schedule more Manhattanviles, Norwiches and Saint Anslems instead -- then the Plymouth State coach should drop that game from their schedule -- there's the lesson to be learned. RIT can thump Potsdam all they want otherwise until someone wises up.
I played DIII college hockey, and I have been on both sides of blowout games. It always ****ed me off if I thought the other team was obviously letting up- as a competitive athlete, I wanted to compete against the best, and even little improvements during a game were victories against great teams. As for being on the winning side of a blowout, it definitely isn't nearly as satisfying, but as someone said, the disparity between teams in the same league can be great, and those games can't be taken off the schedule. There is a big difference when a team does it with class, no matter what the score was- I remember getting blown out by Midd, but somehow they still were classy and respectful about it.
And there you have it, spoken like a true athlete. Most important is your statement about being classy and respectful about it - that is what sportsmanship is all about in my book - being a gracious winner and being a gracious loser regardless of the score at the end of the day.
I agree, well almost.
The tastes great , less filling connotation used here implies to me ...yup your kids should go out and play every shift hard & compete. I'm a firm beleiver in that. The problem is I have also told my kids never to kick someone when their down so...to me there are actualy two lessons that can be learned. It's where they determine that line is ...that's the real story here. Unfortunatley when a coach has his foot on the gas...some of the kids really have little choice.
Hey 5-4...Question...You know how at rinks in some places, where a team gets up by more than 5, they won't put up additional goals on the scoreboard until the trailing team can keep the gap at 5 or less? Is this common everywhere else? I hope so. Wonder why they do this huh? Do you think it's to tell the weaker team to try harder and get better? Seems to me that kids are taught something right from a young age to carry them through to adult life. Wonder what that might be?
Also, parity is the goal in any league. Lob sided scores that are ridiculous makes any league look bad. Nobody can take it seriously; players, coaches, or fans. Does kicking the crap out of a team help create parity? I think the coach may already have an idea that his or her team sucks.
I wonder why they created the salary cap in the NHL?
I wonder why the PWHL in Ontario is agonizing over how to stop the elite teams from tampering with other teams players? Should they consider a cap for players fees?
I'd rather watch games in a league where you know the last place team on any given night has a chance to knock off the first place team. Keep teams grouped where they belong. Somebody has to lose, and sometimes often, but there is something wrong when scores in these losses are out of hand. Tastes great!
A little slice of life my friends.....
Last week Elmira took an 8-0 lead into the 3rd period against Potsdam ( the same Potsdam that RIT filled in by 16 or so a month or so ago)
Elmira took just 6 shots on net in the 3rd with one bouncing off a defenders stick and into the net.No attempt was made to run up the score out of respect for the opposing players and coaching staff.
To quote Kingston Ontario's own Don Cherry... " It's the Canadian way"
Oh .. and where is the Elmira coach from....... Look it up..
Thats the way .. and the only way...
...And Stacy Wilson, Bowdoin coach, is Canadian - so that kind of shoots holes in that argument. Or doesn't New Brunswick count?

What do you mean there you have it? It's not that simple. I could bring in 20 NHLer's I know who would say the same thing but that there is a limit. Would that trump the D3 guy?
I agree that there is a limit- which was my point about Midd- they have never scored in the double digits against opponents (some 9-0 decisions, but never more). This includes a time when the NESCAC was not nearly as competitve as it is now, and back when there was only one DIII women's league (ECAC) with 18 or so teams who all had to play each other each year. He's a classy coach, who recruits competitve and classy players.
Also- "Would that trump the D3 guy?" That would be D3 girl, thanks.![]()
