D3 Decisions: Running up the score

Re: D3 Decisions: Running up the score

Yep, same thing many years ago when the RIT men beat Neumann 24-0. To this day, people who weren't there won't believe us when we say it was unavoidable. We could have scored twice that many. No one likes a 24-0 score, but what was the alternative? Should RIT just stand around while Neumann runs shooting practice on an empty net? That's disrespectful.

Look, for the freakin hundredth time....... You just said that RIT could have scored twice as many right? Do you get it yet! Your opposition will know if you're rubbing it in or not. That's what we're talking about here. Of course some things are unavoidable. Use common sense here, come on.....Were you or someone close to you playing for RIT way back then?....Just a hunch.

Dude, take a chill pill.

An admittedly rare foray into the Womens' Forum for me, but....

I'll believe it. I saw the same thing a couple years ago when Adrian's men's team beat a hapless Concordia team 20-2. It was 12-0 in the middle of the 2nd period and Concordia simply stopped putting forth much of an effort. 3-4 pucks barely got over the goal line and didn't make it to the back of the net. No one blocked passes, poke-checked, or tried to check anyone. At that point Adrian took their foot off the gas and still hung 20 on the scoreboard.

What do you do then, when the team getting thumped essentially quits?

Oh gosh, you shouldn't have gone there... CHG would probably say you need to display some sportsmanship and put the puck in your own net to help them out.

Dudette.... you're right for a change. I'll get right on that. This thread has been twisted around in so many directions it's incredible. We've got about four topics in one going here and nobody realizes it.

5-4.... you hit the nail on the head a while back.

Tastes Great!

Tastes Great!

Re: D3 Decisions: Running up the score

You play the game, not the team.

Poor teams can recruit (improve) or go club/intramural -- poor players end up figuring this out on their own, don't they?

Less Filling!!

Re: D3 Decisions: Running up the score

The PSU coach is going to have to work a little harder than that. A goalie for a public school girls co-op in E. Mass? Didn't know there was such a thing. Who knows? Maybe a diamond in the rough. But at least that Canterbury School PG goalie will be of legal drinking age as a 21-year old freshman to start next season for PSU! Haven't seen that one on the women's side before. Maybe she did a Mormon mission, or a tour in Afghanistan.

Acc'd to the Anaheim LadyDucks page, one of their forwards has committed to PSU for next season as well: http://www.ladyduckshockey.com/

Coach must have stopped off in California to grab a hockey player on her way to search for Osama bin Laden...

Re: D3 Decisions: Running up the score

It appears you were there also. Did you find him?

Sadly, no.

To return to the subject of running up the score - as the UConn womens' basketball team closes iin on the consecutive-game winning record (9 wins to go), they have been blowing teams out of the water. They have beaten many teams by 30-40 points, and one team by over 50. I know it's basketball, and they have a shot clock and thus must shoot, but shouldn't they be just throwing balls off the backboard, poaching the rebound, and then doing the whole the over again so as to not run up the score?

There is the opening I've been waiting for...See we don't care what happens in Basketball, Football, Soccer, LaX, etc...Hockey is different. There is a respect factor in this game that differs from any other sport. It's ingrained in the sport. No other Professional teams that I'm aware of go to the middle of the playing surface after a playoff series and line up to shake hands regardless of what transpired during that series. If they do...they learned it from hockey. It sets the sport apart in the same way as not running up the score is considered taboo. Now do you get it?

Well what U. Conn.could do is bring in a bunch of Candian women basketball players who wouldn't know one end of the ice ( er sorry court) from the other end and couldnt hit the backboard if they could find it then you wouldn't have to worry about even having a score letting alone running it up.
Course the good old NCAA would just come in and halt the program anyway for showing favourtism to Canadian student athletes so your back where you started.
Oh well guess the code of ethics in basketball ( like there is one) will supercede all !!

Apples and oranges, as you sort of stated. I'm a hockey guy. I don't care for basketball really, but I respect the athleticism. In my ignorance, it kind of looks like a freak sport to me. I play it a bit, but never was big on it. What you are suggesting here does sound silly, but it really doesn't apply here if you understand our game and it's history. I wouldn't attempt to tell a basketball person what constitutes integrity in their game. I've been heavily involved in other sports; baseball, football, golf and others. HOCKEY to me is #1. Go to the basketball forum and give em hell!

Be careful not to drag any of these other sports back here. I'll eat you alive.;)

You're right, or course, that it's apple-and-oranges; was just trying to get back on topic...

5 4 Fighting - no, I guess that I don't yet "get it". I don't think the idea that running up the score is bad is particular to hockey - two years ago, everyone was all over the Patriots for blowing teams out and "running up the score" on their competition. While I agree with you that it is a special tradition in hockey with the teams lining up to shake hands after a series, I don't see that has having any correlation to running scores up on people. There's plenty of bad/cheap stuff that occurs during a game/series that refutes the notion that there is some "special" respect factor present in hockey (and not present in other sports) that makes it taboo to run up the score...
