D1 tryouts

Re: D1 tryouts

The double negative's with not and unusual, but like you said, you're far removed from an english major.

But I didn’t say differences in financial capabilities don’t exist, just meant they are similar in the way they give need based aid instead of scholarships. Endowment per student among the ivies are Princeton-$2.23 million, Yale-$2.00 million, Harvard-$1.90 million, Dartmouth- $625,748 Brown-$336,354, Cornell-$271,970. But even with that said, I doubt brown’s lower level of endowments is a reason their hockey program’s struggling. If hockey rankings matched the rankings of financial aid, than it might be a factor. Or if hockey ranking were similar between both the men’s and the women’s, seeing financial restrictions at a school would have to affect both to an extent. But nether is true. Dartmouth’s teams are both far better than their financial status would indicate. Cornell’s men’s and women’s team are at opposite ends of rankings. And Yale’s women’s team has only been in the top 3 once in the history of the program.

Ivies stopped being able to match other school’s financial packages in ’91. This happened to be almost the exact same time when both Brown and Dartmouth started to climb the standings, despite their lower endowments. The only trend that’s indisputable is that at each Ivy League school, there has basically been a constant rise in the standings, from each current coach’s first year up until last season. There’s just one exception, that being Brown in the past three years. So it’s hard to say coaching isn’t the problem even if all of the negative gossip about them is ignored. And Digit did apply for different jobs the past two years, so if people at Brown don’t want her there and she doesn’t want to be at brown, than why is she?

Good research. Your numbers illustrate what is known by many as the "HYP" or "Have and Have Not affect". The difference between the top 3 and the bottom 3 is almost an order of magnitude. That is SIGNIFICANT. While there is always more to the story than the numbers, the numbers do have an impact. While Brown has struggled the last few years, indications are that they are serious about righting the ship. The fact that there are "tryouts" and uneasiness amongst the upper class players is a reflection of this, or as a minimum it is a reflection that they are heading in a different direction. Time will tell.

Have a good day Eh !.

Re: D1 tryouts

Okay

The last player drafted in the NHL draft.

Played 13 years in the NHL could be more I believe the guy won a
Stanley Cup and why would anyone want to take a walk on.

Well UNH did Andy Brickley was a walk on at UNH.

???? yeah forget those tryouts

Re: D1 tryouts

Sorry, I'm not buying the whole walk on thing......

In the guys game, the numbers are so huge.... sure there might be a top 1, 2, or 3 players, but then 4 through 25 become so close.....sure, walk on could improve enough to take over a starting spot.

In the girls game, you have the same 1, 2, 3 players... but.... then you have (if you are lucky) 4 - 10, then you have..... ugh! If you're the 24th girl in camp, it's just not the same.

Hope this isn't taken offensively....great that there may be a place for everybody, but.... comparisons to the guys game are simply inappropriate.

Re: D1 tryouts

Anyone know anything about D1 women's hockey? My daughter just got recruited for D1 spot at Brown. She's obviously only in her first year but we now learned that the coaches instituted "tryouts" for all players even though they were all recruited. I just learned that they dumped 2 juniors and a senior after these "tryouts" and now I'm concerned that my daughter could end up the same way. She gave up scholarship money to play for Brown - I hope we didn't make a mistake in selecting Brown. One of the kids that was let go is the best forward on the team. It doesn't make sense. How do you have tryouts after you've recruited these kids?

In this thread, we've learned about Ivy College endowments and discovered which posters studied the hardest in English class. Now that the season is about to begin, let's bottomline this discussion.

Cookie79, Did your daughter make the team? What are their chances against Connecticut tonight?

He was only one of five players to be drafted that low and play in over 50 games in the NHL!

Re: D1 tryouts

I have a friend that played for a team in Massachusetts and the leading scorer
in the league was living out of his car. He was a soft more walk on.

At that time there was actually div 2 hockey for men. When the coach found out he got the kid housing. This is a true however it was a while ago and that school is now Division one.

Do not let anyone discourage you at least try but also prepare.

Re: D1 tryouts

Score update:

0-7 UConn after two periods.

As a side note, the on-air announcer commented that the team lost 10 players from last season, only three to graduation.

Methinks it's time to cut more upperclassmen.

But seriously, heard good things tonight about the prospective recruting class....keep cutting those who can't play, and keep replacing them with those who can, and eventually you'll get there.

Yes, my daughter's good to go....Not looking so good for the team, however. We lost 8 to 1 and, as a whole, we played very poorly. I heard during the game last night, that four of the kids who are gone were ECAC all-academic. They are Hunter, Suprey, Small and Bishop. I don't know much about any of them personally but their reputations were good - at least among the parents. You'd think the coach would've been proud of their accomplishments but, instead, it looks like a disturbing trend. Among the parents at last night's game, this was a HUGE topic for discussion and nobody seems to know what's going on amongst the coaches and the girls. Oh well, this is just a beginning - maybe things will improve.......

Yeah, big surprise when you start stirring up the ****. I'm sure there is a wonderful sense of team right about now. Amazing what whining and carping will do for chemistry. Way to go genius.

Clearly, this problem predated anything that happened on this forum And if comments on this forum are controlling the team's chemistry, then the team has a bigger problem then they know of, so give me a break! So am I wrong? What happened to the ECAC all-academics? Coincidence? I think not!

Yup, that seems to be working.

Keep this up and Brown will be for sure looking to add 1 more than planned to next years recruiting class. You don't think the coaches and players have enough issues to deal with on their own, without having an extra cancer on the sidelines they never forsaw?

Few players are so unbelievably talented that any coach will put up with nightmare parents to have them...and news bulletin.. you are definitely one of those here.

I'm not worried
