Covfefe-19 Part 9: Shelter In Place is Temporary, but Wu-Tang is Forever

Fair enough. Already obvious at this point, but we’ll agree to disagree on the last part, and leave it at that.
Side note, this is why I enjoy reading (most the time skimming) this forum.

Even though sometimes it might feel like '90s Wings/Avs or '70s Flyers/Everyone on the Cafe topics, it's just words and we move on.

You're a bit behind.

Kalamazoo, Michigan, pop. 74,262. Like it never existed. "One day, it'll just disappear........................."

Where are you getting your number from....tomorrow's papers?

Currently the "Official" count is 73,243 (UCBadger uses Washington Post numbers..... https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/national/coronavirus-us-cases-deaths/ )

And I should have posted that one about 2:00 this afternoon....got busy doing other stuff.

The peak of Keanu's acting career.

Ohhhhhhhhhhh no. He has quite a few roles better than that, although that performance was outstanding. ;)

To The Bone, 47 Ronin was solid, A Scanner Darkly, Man Of Tai Chi, and let's not forget The Replacements (ok that last one is a guilty pleasure).

Hey, you know what? Ramsey County North Dakota has got it whipped too. No new cases. Everyone who had it is cured. That is some top notch pandemic whipping government for you right there.

I'll say this again, just one time. The United States is not Hong Kong. It is not South Korea. It is not New Zealand. It is not Sweden, or Norway, or Italy or Bahrain or any other place that you want to bring up as some sort of example or comparison, or whatever.

We are a huge country. We are densely populated in some areas, not so much in others. We send tens if not hundreds of thousands of people a week all around the globe on business or for pleasure. We are visited by tens if not hundreds of thousands of people monthly. We are literally the global crossroads, and that says nothing about the internal mobility we have in this country.

Just stop. It's silly.

You know what's silly? Your complete BS reply. You made the claim that social distancing cannot stop the spread of the virus, which is very simply wrong. Not one single point in your response has ANYTHING to do with your claim. You're not even moving the goalposts, your changing games. Try to defend your actual point, clown.

It is much easier to scroll by. People have made intelligent, logical arguments. The responses are tone deaf. It reminds me of talking to someone with diabetes when they expect you to say it will go away in a bit because they can't deal with having to do x.y,z. It isn't fair. (they end up in a coma. In this case people end up dead.)

Its sort of like listening to someone say they have to give the kid the candy at the check out line because they won't listen to no and will pitch a fit. Our culture has made it acceptable to not care for others. It has also made acceptable for people to be intellectually lazy and have very short attention spans. Not a good mix.

not if we find effective anti-virals that can reduce the severity

I saw an interesting thread on twitter contesting even tamiflu’s value. You need to get it really before peak viral load. That’s usually in the absolute earliest signs of infection or before. Otherwise the outcomes weren’t dramatically improved.

This exactly describes what has happened with our coddling of the Republicans. The way back is to remake social norms -- the political norms will follow.

I go out of my way now to be kind; not nice, which is a way of disengaging, but kind, which is a way of acknowledging the humanity of the individual I am interacting with. And this is difficult because as an introvert my every instinct is disengage as soon as possible because these interactions are difficult.

But I genuinely believe that every act of kindness and humanity does more to fight the Nazis then canvassing. We must make it unacceptable for them to behave that way in public. They can go back to their pens and be animals; that's not my affair. But once they enter the public sphere we must hold them to human standards. Their shameful childish virulence is literally lethal.

Re: Covfefe-19 Part 9: Shelter In Place is Temporary, but Wu-Tang is Forever

I think yesterday, someone posted the results of a "is it safe to go to" survey- where not quite a majority of R's thought it was safe, but a gross majority of D's (well over 90%) thought it was not.

So if you assume 50/50 distribution (which I know it's not, but the math is easier), then roughly 25% of the population think it's safe to open stuff right now.

And I've asked this before- what costs more money- running a business at 25% or at 0? How many companies can scale down while being productive and profitable? If you do too much, you are far more likely to tank because all emergency funding will be used to restart to sell nothing. If you do to little, then you are spending money on assets that are not needed- making costs less even than being closed.

My point is that it's not really up to dumpy to open the country. It's up to companies to come up with a real plan that is affordable and safe for their employees (they also need to feel safe to come back) and that makes your customers feel safe to buy stuff.

(must spread reputation)

Good point. I will do my best.

But it's interesting to see people ignore the models, and that there's a tail at the end where it's clear that with the proper prevention, there will be a point where nobody will be infected, even when there's a group of people who can. Which clearly means two things- deaths are preventable and that you can do things w/o vaccine that will stop the virus. That's how there have been US predictions that could have stopped this at 70k.

And based on the number of deaths in MI, and it's down turn in rates, it's pretty clear that social distancing is more than just spreading all of the infections and deaths out- it actually has the potential to stop it completely. But it's totally up to us to get that outcome. And the more we do now, the faster it stops.

Yeah, you need to take Tamiflu as soon as you show any symptoms, you can’t tough it out a few days and then decide to go to the doctor.

Which is a challenge because in the first day or so you may not feel sick enough to go to the doctor.
