This is how the average cop goes about his business far too often. It could easily have ended with another cop shooting an unarmed black man.
There are thousands of people packed into the Q in Cleveland right now who hate government and think it is almost universally incompetent. Except for two areas where big tough men carry craploads of firearms, law enforcement and the military. I think the opposite is probably true.
As far as I'm concerned cops like in the linked video are lucky to make it home unscathed at the end of the shift, especially with how things have been going lately. That is NOT the way a civilized society should allow its police to act. If this cop asked me my name I'd have said the same thing. My name is WeAreNDHockey. If he actually would have ASKED for an ID, I'd have shown it to him. What possible reason could the cop have had for acting this way? If he knew the guy was on probation then he knew it was for a non-violent crime. Did he just ASSUME he was a criminal because of where he lived or because of the color of his skin? Or is he an equal opportunity thug who just likes to rough people up and thinks his badge allows him to. Oh wait, silly me, of course his badge allows him to.
When people get pushed and pushed and pushed, time and again, unfairly, eventually they act out. All too often that comes in the form of riots, or worse. Riots are bad and wrong. Shooting some random cop because of what other specific cops did is bad and wrong. I'll not condone any of that, but you better believe I understand completely why it is happening.
At some point white people, if there are enough of us left who are not hopelessly bigoted, will have to join our black brothers and sisters and get this madness to stop. Much like Wendell Pierce has said about the best way to get some immediate and far reaching gun control is for every single black male in the country to apply for concealed carry permits, maybe the rest of society will finally see the abuses black people have been suffering is they see some white faces in the marches. What a horrible thing it would be if that were true. I suspect it might be. Black people shouldn't have to shoot and kill innocent cops to get the bad ones to stop shooting and killing innocent black men. Shame on America for where we are as a nation.
