Re: Cops 3: Shoot low boys -- they're ridin' Shetland ponies!

the domestic terrorist had multiple chances to surrender peacefully. too bad for him.

How many chances did the Bundys get after two people in their militia killed two cops and the never effective Good Guy with a Gun?

Re: Cops 3: Shoot low boys -- they're ridin' Shetland ponies!

Racism [initially] is a side effect of poverty.

That's exactly what I said. Poor whites and poor blacks competing for the same scarce resources, starting in the late 1860s.

and then, what keeps racism alive, is the persistency of poverty among the same people generation after generation after generation....

Re: Cops 3: Shoot low boys -- they're ridin' Shetland ponies!

Anyone have trouble with the precedent of the police using a robot to kill a human being?

What, in the future, is to prevent Robbie from having 2 machine guns + flamethrower and be sent into a hazardous (for humans) situation and have the operator press the "mayhem" button and kill everyone? Life just became cheaper. Heck, if somebody dings up old Robbie, we send it off to the body and fender shop for repairs. A lot cheaper than a trip to the hospital!!!

If it accomplishes the goal of removing a target, protecting the public and keeping other people safe, then why not? What if they had the ability to kill him with a robot, decided not to because it might look bad and then ended up with another 2-3 dead officers?

Re: Cops 3: Shoot low boys -- they're ridin' Shetland ponies!

Although we all know that money steers the ship in this country, I think it is too convenient an excuse to (impliedly) place responsibility for racism at the feet of the wealthy.

not "responsibility" for racism: that is poor whites and poor blacks competing for the same resources, and an inevitable outgrowth of our tribal instincts when left unchecked by our better nature.

I said that the persistency of racism is very convenient for the wealthy, not its origin.

Agreed. If there is an option to avoid the further loss of human life it would be silly to not use it.

Got it.

"did"?

this is new doctrine as of barely 1/2 a day. don't waste our time.

Re: Cops 3: Shoot low boys -- they're ridin' Shetland ponies!

... why do conservative, gun supporting politicians not allow concealed guns in government facilities where they operate?

... and yet surround themselves with people carrying guns (Capital police, Secret Service, private security).

It's not the gun; it's who has it.

Re: Cops 3: Shoot low boys -- they're ridin' Shetland ponies!

What if they had the ability to kill him with a robot, ...

Question (and a key one):
Was this "robot"
- an autonomous device programmed to kill a specific target or targets in a region (press "Play" and away it goes); or,
- was it a glorified RC car with someone running the joysticks and making decisions from the other side of six feet of concrete?

The latter is acceptable to me; the former is a Schwarzenegger movie.

I dont agree with Mookie much but in this case I kinda do. The shooter wasnt going to surrender and was still dangerous to the public.

Do they have specific use of force rules covering robotic bombs? Because until they do, the slippery slope on that one is ridiculously easy to foresee.

Do the robots have eyes so they can see a banana peel on a slope?

If they had the ability to do any sort of "policing" with a robot, the unemployment rate would be higher. Or it'd be the same, as they'd just retire on their pensions. Not to mention, it'd be judge, jury, and executioner.

I guessed from the article that this was one of those robots that are designed to go into a bomb scare situation, pick up the device, and detonate it. In this case they just gave it the bomb as a payload and used the robot as a delivery mechanism. Which is pretty clever albeit scary as hell as precedent.
