Re: Cops 3: Shoot low boys -- they're ridin' Shetland ponies!

Can anyone answer me how - concealed weapons do not make society more dangerous (but rather make it safer)...but send the Capitol into a total meltdown?

The Capitol is a government owned building. It's a gun-free zone (carry permit or not).

Re: Cops 3: Shoot low boys -- they're ridin' Shetland ponies!

There isn't a race "war."

would the term "a series of pitched battles" be a better fit? these exact same tensions have been around for well over 140 years if not longer. the way they are expressed may have changed over the years, but not the underlying resentments.

The Emancipation Proclamation may have freed the slaves, but there was no forethought nor preparation whatsoever about what might happen next. Poor white folks who were barely making a living to begin with suddenly found themselves in competition with all sorts of new jobseekers who were willing to work for less.

it's always first about the money; and the competition over who gets more of it.

Rich folks were completely fine with poor whites and poor blacks fighting each other, it kept them safer: imagine if poor whites and poor blacks one day suddenly woke up and said, "hey, wait a minute, why are we fighting each other? we're both poor! why don't we work together instead to do something about our mutual poverty?" The rich would never stand for that!

Rich people of all races have a covert vested interest in seeing racism continue (look at how many well-to-do blacks there are promoting racism in order to keep themselves well off: do you think Al Sharpton really cares at all about poor black people compared to how much he enjoys power, money, and influence?)

I guess I shouldn't be surprised to learn that the police have bombs at their disposal, but I am.

You're not surprised they have them. You're surprised that they admit it by using them.

Cops have had flash-bang grenades for years. Take away the flash and amp up the bang = bomb.

Enemy of my enemy theory?

Pretty cynical.

You can take race out of this and it is still the same...there is a fundamental breakdown and no one seems interested in fixing it.

Fixing it? it's rich vs poor and the more things remain messed up, the more secure the rich are in their wealth.

Ever notice how the most vocal advocates for gun "control" all are protected by armed guards who would keep their weapons no matter what new "controls" are imposed?

Obviously. Why is the question.

Concealed guns supposedly make people safer and while some may disagree, politicians are people.

How do you know that gun control advocates would 'keep their weapons no matter what new controls are imposed'?

And FF, why do conservative, gun supporting politicians not allow concealed guns in government facilities where they operate?

Although we all know that money steers the ship in this country, I think it is too convenient an excuse to (impliedly) place responsibility for racism at the feet of the wealthy. But to the extent racism is the result of ignorance and fear, what group of people has done more in the last 30 years to manipulate people based on fear of an army of boogeymen made up of blacks, mexicans, muslims, gays, nonbelievers, and the poor than the GOP? And who else carries the anti-intellectual battle flag as proudly? It may be unfair to name the dog based upon the appearance of its tail, but the tail is definitely wagging that dog, and they need to own up to the result. They might as well replace the elephant with the image of Willie Horton.

There's some deliberate fostering of racism by the wealthy to keep the black and white poor from uniting. But for the most part the true hard core racists are the poor. The type of characteristics that go along with racism (lack of education, lack of opportunity causing people to fight for table scraps, authoritarian parenting and social modeling, far right politics, black and white thinking admitting of no nuance) are characteristics you find most prevalent among the poor.

Racism is a side effect of poverty.

Legally what needs to happen is that the doctrine of qualified immunity needs to be scaled back.

Right now it is so tilted towards the cop that they can literally get away with murder. Because not only is there an objective test, but also a subjective one. We don't just ask, "Would a reasonable person in similar circumstances have felt their life was in danger?" but also "Did that actual cop reasonably believe his life was in danger at the time without benefit of hindsight?"

I was listening to BBC radio this morning and they had on a spokesman for the National Association of Police Organizations. The host asked some polite British version of "Why are American cops so crazy violent?" and the guy explained that even though these videos may look horrifying to the public, there's a lot of complicated legality and nearly all of it actually fell within the legal standard set, with apparently zero self-awareness that that answer is a 1000 times more terrifying.

about time you jump on the mookie/bullworth doctrine:

"Rich people have always stayed on top by dividing white people from colored people/ but white people got more in common with colored people then they do with rich people/ we just gotta eliminate them. White people, black people, brown people, yellow people, get rid of 'em all/ All we need is a voluntary, free spirited, open-ended program of procreative racial deconstruction/ Everybody just gotta keep ****in' everybody til they're all the same color"

Re: Cops 3: Shoot low boys -- they're ridin' Shetland ponies!

I find this (police actually executing someone) completely unacceptable...

If he was in a shootout with the police, which it sounds like he was, then they need to do something to take him out. Bullet or bomb, either works.

Re: Cops 3: Shoot low boys -- they're ridin' Shetland ponies!

Anyone have trouble with the precedent of the police using a robot to kill a human being?

What, in the future, is to prevent Robbie from having 2 machine guns + flamethrower and be sent into a hazardous (for humans) situation and have the operator press the "mayhem" button and kill everyone? Life just became cheaper. Heck, if somebody dings up old Robbie, we send it off to the body and fender shop for repairs. A lot cheaper than a trip to the hospital!!!
