And, this guy was a vet. Didn't the rightwingnuts pitch a hissy fit a couple years ago when the Justice Department released a report concerning the possiblity of increased violent attacks carried out by our veterans?

I'll never convince you otherwise.
I can say I'm completely comfortable on a shooting range with other responsible shooters.

And I've never heard of someone robbing a shooting range. Or a police station.

Just ignore them, there's no point in arguing with them. The topic is a blindspot in otherwise usually functionally logic.

So in an open carry state, when there's a shooting incident happening, how does law enforcement determine who the good guys with guns are, and who the perps are?

I suspect the cops would go with "who's shooting at me". Then, "who's complying to my commands."

Just saying, especially since I've already seen the "officers place their lives at risk every shift" talking point on the news from the usual suspects. Let's acknowledge that the vast majority of officers will never need to fire their weapons except at the range, and most will never be injured on the job, either.

The NRA Response

"The reports from Minnesota are troubling and must be thoroughly investigated,” the influential gun rights group said in a statement Friday afternoon. “In the meantime, it is important for the NRA not to comment while the investigation is ongoing.”

So when some nut shoots up a school the NRA finds a way to comment and make sure we dont paint all gun users as nuts. When a black dude gets killed legally carrying they cant comment and need to investigate. But I am sure they just want to do their due diligence and arent acting in a racist way at all.

(which of course is BS...if this was a white dude they would be out in front calling for the cops head on a stick)

Yes it's a hard job but this problem isn't nearly as pervasive in other economically stable countries.

uno makes a good point. As is the case with drones, when you depersonalize killing to that degree, you have to be careful to identify boundaries.

I need to add, also, that there has been a very enjoyable exchange of ideas on various contentious topics on cafe lately.

In the end this is why the conversation never gains any ground. (not blaming Sic and rufus per se). I doubt that that many well prepared cops are that unsure of whom they are up against in the heat of the moment, yet cops have in fact have proven they can get the, "who's shooting at me/complying" judgement call wrong. Neither extreme is the right answer.

There's never any nuance or gray proposed by the majority and I suppose it's why we're stuck with Hillary and Trump to pout it into context. Black dude gets shot by white cops and BLM'ers cry racism while knuckle-draggers cry he deserved it. We have to get past the notion of, "what's mine is mine" (mine = POV) and understand the dividing line is much thinner than too many are willing to admit. The advocates for taking away every single gun = huge minority just as those that aver let it all hang out are just as small in number.

******. Sitting here in bats**t crazy Philippines and I'm thinking, "Why do I want to go home?". Is the apex we're seemingly entangled by no worse than the dozen previous moments in history that repeatedly cycle in and out, or have we truly upped the game? The optimist in me (90/10 o/p) thinks we've peaked, but the tenner really wants to branch out. :(
