Cops 3: Shoot low boys -- they're ridin' Shetland ponies!

Re: Cops 3: Shoot low boys -- they're ridin' Shetland ponies!

Those people "didn't see nuthin'," or "Ain't seen sh**," when it comes to inter-neighborhood affairs. But hoo boy did they see everything when it doesn't involve their neighbors.

Absolutely it's a culture thing, but it's hard to erase decades of Jesse Jackson's and Al Sharpton's tactics. And no one wants to be the Anti-Jesse/Al person because there is no money in helping your community.

Jesse and Al were modern day snake-oil salesmen who turned a profit from acting outraged. Why fix the problem when the problem is making you money?

I promise you community relationships in those neighborhoods are deeper than just about those of any other. Beyond that, raise your 5 year old in that community and then your judgements would have credibility.

Re: Cops 3: Shoot low boys -- they're ridin' Shetland ponies!

That's part of the problem. There isn't a big part of their job that involves helping a little kid get their kitten out of a tree or delivering a baby by the side of a highway. A sizable portion of the people they deal with every day are scumbags. A small portion actually carry serious threat to life and limb of the cop. Even those less scummy or violent confrontations, such as traffic stops, aren't exactly like someone coming in and buying a dozen roses from your flower shop. Those people are pizzed that they've been pulled over, and even more pizzed they're getting a ticket. You hear every form of lie or B.S. excuse the human mind can conceive. If you're not a cynic after six months work as a cop, you haven't been showing up for your job.

I can see this.

Q. When faced with Black Lives Matter protestors blocking your vehicle, what law should be invoked to charge them?

A. F = mA.

"You don't live there so you don't have credibility" is complete BS. Along the lines of "If you didn't play football you can't comment on the game". Another complete cop out. Excuses, excuses.

No, it's more along the lines of "whether you played football or not, you have more credibility commenting on the game if you have been in a position to closely observe it."

Not BS at all.

My neighbor is basically at the top of the Saint Paul PD. I've been meaning to ask her about this whole thing but I'm not sure how to approach it. She's an amazing neighbor and extremely level-headed so I'd love to hear what her thoughts on this are.

Then I have. Not as closely as some, I won't even pretend that. In HS, had a black friend who was one of the community guys in the bad part of North Mpls, non-gang-affiliated, but knew all of 'em. Whenever another mutual white friend and I visited, we knew we were being watched, but also knew that everyone knew why we were there. Basically, from what we were told, was this guy told everyone that we were ok, don't bother us. And then told us, don't do anything stupid.

Mentioned earlier that there were a couple gang members on my HS bouncyball team, too.

Finally, used to work with a guy from North Mpls who was previously involved with some gang activity, although I don't know if he ever was an actual member. Had a couple gunshot wounds and such from those events. Some of the stories he told were rather shocking.

Mookie don't need to know how to make a cherry pie to tell the chef whether or not it taste like poo poo

Mookie has to have done more than look at pictures to know what a good cherry pie is supposed to taste like.

Re: Cops 3: Shoot low boys -- they're ridin' Shetland ponies!

Cherry pie is pretty good, if you ask me.

Knowledge of football by...watching hundreds of hours a year watching football...vs. knowledge of the workings of relationships in urban AA areas...by, what, having been told about it? Guessing what it might be like?

I kinda have to agree.

Very anecdotal, but it MAY help. Years ago, my best friend's step-sisters (lily-white, always lived in lily-white neighborhoods, etc etc etc) and us watched "Barbershop." They didn't really get a single joke, at all. Had no clue why even non-jokes were just hilarious to us. They admitted they interacted with their first minority in HS. Well, no wonder, then.

And related, and very anecdotal: when I still got my hair cut in barbershops, I had gone to a certain shop in Crystal (MN) since I moved there as a child. Old crusty white guy ran it for years. Sold it to a brotha who came out of North Mpls. Still went there. Was told flat out by him "You still the only white-boy that comes in here. It's kinda funny!" I honestly was known as "The White Boy." I found it hilarious, and believe me, Barbershop (the movie) is more true to life than many might think.

I'm a bit surprised Minny doesn't do a better job on this issue...

On what issue? Minneapolis-St. Paul isn't very diverse to begin with, although it's growing and St. Paul is a bit further along. However, the TC metro isn't anywhere near the top for being the most segregated for large metro-areas in every index I searched - one had them 34th with areas such as Chicago, Detroit, Cincinnati, St. Louis, LA, Philly, Birmingham, Boston, New Orleans and Milwaukee almost universally rising to the top. Not sure if I got the context of the comment correct and if not mea culpa.

Guessing that as a rich, smart city we still haven't managed to put a dent in the problems of No Minneapolis.

From a diversity standpoint, I was reflecting on that by friends. Just one generation ago (early 80s), you never saw a minority. In my outer tier suburban high school class of 250, we had exactly one adopted American Indian, zero AAs, zero Asians, and zero Hispanics - and the American Indians story was tragic. The cities have been blindsided by diversity. For a walk around Lake Calhoun, one now sees nearly half minorities...and a trip to Mall of America, one often sees well over half minorities. While other places have had racial diversity forever, we've been rather blindsided by it in the last generation.

No overage Canadians, at least.

Complete BS. You must just be blind to it.

BLM is blocking I-35W southbound right now. Traffic delays of up to 90 minutes due to traffic reroutes.
