Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Anybody want to take a stab at the number of UM fans that'll be in the building tonight? I'm hedging my bets at around 3,000.

Who the **** cares. The Morgue could barely compete with the row & 1/2 contingent from Huntsville.
3 NHL draft choices + Krug? Leave early? Wut? SHOCKING! (courtesy The Hat).

Has anyone checked you for mind-altering substances lately?

Back from China and there appears to be no change. Are we now as apathetic as this team. It seems as if this roster isn't working so try some of the kids who are riding thw bench. Last year Perlini was non-existent until the GLI. Try a new approach this one isn't working on the ice, in the stands or in this forum.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Well apparently a couple of cute ladyfriends of mine are making it out to their first msu hockey game tonight so hopefully we make it a good show.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

If the Spartans had played this well in the first period last week they would have played for the championship. Two to go.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Now that's a huge boost - how many times have we been on the wrong end of these OT in recent campaigns.
Of course, the tying goal was a bit of a stinker. Yanakeff was crosschecked back into his net a moment before the puck went in. Unfortunately it can't be part of the review.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Holy hell, that feels so good. I never feels safe with leads against Michigan and those fears were only realized. That tying goal was just crushing.

We played pretty **** well for the most part. Michigan has some wonderful speed and it really burned us a few times. On their first goal, i think it was Langlais, took about 4 strides and was at 150% speed to pick Gazley's pocket who looked like was about to break out a sure 2 on 1. That was an incredible play.

There were too many positives to cover them all. The team played. We got a good number of scoring chances and at times really controlled the play. What an uplifting game.

Everyone needed that win. The coaches, players, fans...that was huge.

EDIT: Upon watching the big 10 replay, it was Rust who had that nice backcheck setting up the first UM goal, not Langlais. Whatever, not that any of us care.

Copy and paste alert:

For the most part, I was pleased with tonight's performance. We had an amazing amount of jump - something that's been missed all season, frankly. We were defensively solid, we took shots on the power play, and we sustained offensive pressure. We wanted this game.

I was very pleased with Yanakeff's play in-net. The guy still gave up some significant rebounds, but he did an excellent job keeping sight of the puck and stopping shots. For a young goaltender in his first really big game, it was an excellent performance.

Us nearly choking the game away near the end was unfortunate. It was total deja vu and a story I've seen play out all season: Hold a two-goal lead for 54 minutes (or so), give up a goal on the kill, give up another when the opposing goaltender is pulled with seconds left, then hold on for dear life in the overtime period. It was nice to finally see that similar framework play out positively for us for once, but it needs to stop now. (Actually, it needed to stop after the Friday game against UAH, but late is better than never.)

Great night for Krug. Guy worked hard all night, blocked some shots, and netted a hat-trick. Kid's a spark plug when his head's on straight.

Also, Hunwick's a *****.

Will be interesting how we respond at Yost tomorrow. I was very critical of this team when they fell victim to the atmosphere at Lawson: They lost focus, committed some of the dumbest penalties I've seen in a long time, and set themselves up for failure. Yost tomorrow night will be ten times the atmosphere that Lawson was on that Saturday night in November. We need to keep our emotions in check and focus on playing tomorrow night like we played tonight.

With 10 losses already, we need tomorrow night's game just as badly as we needed tonight's contest

This team needs to keep this "edge", win or lose. All that they can do is work towards playoff contention, and playing like they did last night will help towards that goal.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

The offensive output since christmas has been a wonderful sign. We certainly had no shortage of great chances last night and considering Michigan is a solid defensive team, that is awesome to see. 13 goals in 3 games is a huge confidence booster for our guys. While our powerplay goals were scored on 5-3 PP's, the other pp's for the most part did a good job creating scoring opportunities; another positive sign.

I thoroughly enjoyed having another tall goaltender in net for us. I feel like it's been about a decade since we've had a goalie that stood much taller than the crossbar. Yanakeff could be a special weapon in the future.

I am going to try not to worry too much about the game tonight. Last night was emotionally draining enough. I think we can get the win but it will be much more difficult. Whatever the outcome, we've got a lot to build off of for a second half run.

Again, feels great for the players, coaches and fans.

Also, Hunwick's a *****.

That was pretty disappointing on Chumwick's part. He's always been a great story, allowed to walk on because of his brother and then perform to an almost All-American level. His lack of character was pretty pathetic for someone I always considered a stand-up guy.

Big Willie looked like the second coming of Miller.

Krug played out of his mind.

Daults was in this game more than I've ever seen him a game.

The 10 on Gazer was BS.

What exactly was it for? I actually didn't even realize it happened until i noticed he was still in the box well after his penalty.

Was it for talkin' to the ref? It couldn't have been for the tussle with their goalie. Yeah, Gazley skated through and probably jawed a bit but it was Hunwick who straight up clocked him.

Chumwick, I like that. He showed his true colors tonight as far as lack of character. Nice acting job in the third period, ***hat.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

It was important to come out of this weekend with a split. But it's a bit disheartening to see the Spartans turned away yet again on U-M home ice without a goal. I don't think Hunwick had to make a single difficult save. On a side note - if he needs a good backup plan for a career path ...
Palmisano was solid in an "emergency start"; by the time the forth goal went in he and the rest had very little starch left.
Good games from Merrifield and Reimer - and especially from Gazley, who was a very determined skater and shooter. Very disappointed to see some pretty good odd-man rushes fizzle. Grant absolutely needs to do something about his stick work. How many 2-on-1's did we leave on the doorstep?

I didn't really agree with the first call, it was Hunwick's fault for waiting so long to play the puck. As for the second call...the puck was out of the zone, Krug was way behind the play, and went out of his way to pull at the goalie's legs with his stick in front of a referee. Even if Hunwick embellished, as you claim, Krug still deserves 2 minutes for doing something so stupid.

The 10 on Gazer was BS.

He had some choice words for the referee after he got his first penalty for dragging down Hagelin. Can't expect any favors from the ref after you do something like that.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

http://www.msuspartans.com/view.gal?id=84515 Look at photo 13 i believe...Also what happened to the automatic 5 min game misconduct for contact to the head? Does that not apply to goalies??

Apparently not if you play for Michigan. I watched Hogan do the same thing last year at the Joe and no call at all. Also, at GLI this year, Glendenning was straddling some guy from Tech and punched him in the face- no call. So, I guess contact to the head only applies to other teams.

TV announcers called Hunwick the "Hero of the game." Gag. Heroes play with integrity; they don't punch people in the head or take dives.

I found myself hoping that somebody would just absolutely smoke him behind the net. If he's gonna hit the ice and draw a call, might as well make it real.

I honestly thought for 2 periods we played pretty well last night. We caused turnovers and had good transitions in the neutral zone. The third came around and it looked as if we had finally run out of gas. From the drop of the puck to start the third, we were on our heels. Michigan's speed advantage was glaringly obvious in the final 20 minutes. Pretty disappointing.

I saw some Red Wings in us last night, but not the good kind. The kind where we don't shoot the **** puck when given a good opportunity. I was beyond frustrated when Grant fudged that shorthanded 2 on 1 that ended up resulting in the penalty to make it 5 on 3. Adding to that, i am not sure i can even count how many times we Darren Helm'd it right into Hunwick's chest. Oh well, gotta move on.

Well, overall, I think we should feel good about the weekend. We got the exciting home win and I think strides have been taken since the break.

6 points or bust this weekend, however.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

The Spartans need to make sure that the forwards score. It was great to see Krug get a hat-trick, but if this team wants to win games, the scoring needs to come from the forwards more and more. Let's face it, UM wasn't going to let Tory get those chances again the very next night, so guess who needed to get those goals?

I really don't see a major fault in how the team plays, they JUST NEED TO SCORE! Unless they break that issue on a consistent basis, the rest is academic. No goals means it doesn't matter what happens in net or in front of it, really.

The major fault I see is players who appear to be looking for the perfect shot, and in the process hanging on to the puck too long. Just throw it at the net, follow your shot if it doesn't get there and hope one of your teammates is in the neighborhood to pick up a rebound. Doesn't have to be pretty - just has to get in there. Just my .02.
