Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Agree. There are no extra points for pretty goals. Shoot and crash, crash and shoot...

Not to throw cold water on a so-so weekend, but wut is the deal with the $133 sweaters, Nike?

Cue expresssion of incredulity:

Oh for the days of the $75 official gear.

It's called greed, and I would guess it's not giving the school all that much. Crazy!

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

I see that I was not the only one who noticed the progression from $75 twill sweaters, to $75 sweaters with glue-on embellishments, to $75 screen print sweaters, to $130 twill sweaters.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Looks like it was a good win last night. Good to see Perlini still leading the scoring charge.

I think coach Comley has a goalie conundrum on his hands. Who deserves to play more? I think most would argue Yanakeff at this point but can we really tell Palmisano to take a seat? It's not like he hasn't been mostly solid and Yanakeff has a very small sample size.

Either way, we need 3 points tonight just as badly as we needed them last night. Let's hope we don't wait til the 3rd period to put anything in the net.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Well, at least we went unbeaten this weekend. It seemed like we let Saturday slip away from us, but at least it wasn't a loss. There were some definite bright spots on Friday, though, so I'll remain cautiously optimistic as we head into the upcoming series.

We are in dire need of at least a split next weekend, though. That's a tough order not only because we're playing Miami, but also because Miami seems to play really, really well at Munn.

Time to step up.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Condolences and best wishes to Daultan Leveille and the rest of the Leveille family. Daultan's brother died on Monday at the age of 21.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Pretty tragic and I can't imagine how hard it has been for Daultan to balance hockey, school and his brother's illness. Thoughts are with him and his family.

As for last weekend, losing a shootout feels like such a given. At least we won a road series.

For this weekend, Miami hasn't seem to have displayed that killer instinct they have had the last few seasons or so. I think we can get at least a split but we must get a sweep. Hell, we need a double sweep.

We will of course be without the services of Mr. Leveille. My hope is he takes his time, and comes back fresh when ready.

Realistically, with about 12 games left, we can probably give about three more losses. Past the 14-loss mark, and the rest of the season is officially an unofficial formality.

We're in dire need of at least a split this weekend. If Miami sweeps us, we're in extremely rough shape.

I see only 4-5 wins at most. I need PROZAC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Not to sound like a drama queen, but this weekend is a "crossroads" sort of moment for the program. It's the first full weekend at home against an elite league opponent. Attendance will be high and with TV, a lot of eyes will be on this team.

If MSU can win one game and be competitive both nights, I think we've found some consistency that could put MSU on a path to a strong finish.
Lose both games, and the questions about the direction of the program will mount and intensify. "Why can't MSU beat Miami at home?", for example (just for starters).

Outside of last season's CCHA playoffs, this is the biggest make-or-break series the last two seasons, IMHO.

HA! The questions about the program (Comley) started mounting 7 years ago when kids started checking out him.
BTW, looks like the league suspended Jim Roque - I guess after he questioned why his team couldn't resort to thuggery to exact revenge after the previous night's fail.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Whatever. That song has a hundred verses, sort of like a Bob Dylan saga.

Thinking about tonight. As far as line-by- line success, some of the best numbers came out of Leveille being at center. But Grant has centered a few good combinations as well now that I look at it. I think with Hayes and his recent overwhelming faceoff %, he should needs to be in the top 6.
What I'm saying is with Leveille out of the picture, looking at this past season's scoring and +/-, let's continue this mental exercise by going by noting that Gazley's only been on when Leveille's there. He's had very little shift time with anyone else. And yet he's an important piece.

So let's go
Perlini-Grant-Gazley
Walrod-Hayes-Nill
Merrifield-Wolfe-Forfar
dChelios-Reimer-Golembiewski
Krug-Grassi
Crandell-Shelgren
jChelios-Buttery

And later ...
Alright, there's a chance Leveille wrapped everything up at home and could be in the lineup.

Well, if you're looking for some well-condensed, level-headed reason or series of reasons as to why we won tonight, you're not getting that from me. I have no clue. None. Superb defense in the second and third along with a sprinkling of magic fairy dust? I... um... sure. I'll go with that.

That was undoubtedly one of the strangest games I've ever seen. I'm not saying I won't take the final result, though. ;)

Also, it took a boatload of courage for Leveille to play tonight. Hats off to the kid.
