Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Per the MSU Hockey page on Facebook, Jeff Petry (Edmonton) and Chris Mueller (Nashville) are to make their NHL debuts tonight for their respective teams. Here's wishing both of them great games!

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Mark Hollis is our athletic director. He by all means does a fine job on the football and basketball side of things but hockey does not seem to appear very high on his priority list.

Did Hollis fire Comley yet?

There you go.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

So, we have UM at Munn on Friday. Let's note these bulletpoints...

- UM students go back to school on the 5th. (The Friday game's on the 7th.)
- UM won the GLI and their fanbase is still buzzing from the Big Chill.
- Our students are on break until next week.
- I don't think this fanbase could possibly care any less about the 10th-place MSU hockey program right now.

Any reason to not believe Munn will be 2/3rds UM fans on Friday?

The team just has to make sure to keep 'em quiet. Which can happen if MSU takes care of some glaring defensive / clearing issues evident last Wednesday/Thursday. Problem is State can gradually put things together for a modest run to March and still assure itself of another missed NCAA tournament. (Unless they can miraculously avoid losing more than 2 games the rest of the way or secure a Mason Cup).

Which will be enough to satisfy the current AD.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

This is back on the third page... You know it's funny how fans want their players to have passion and work their tails off at all times and be committed, yet the fans seem to be.. "meh, we struggle so I'm out of here". I see some posting on other threads but don't have anything to say about their own team. Yeah, things are kinda low, but look at the group of players here and what they could get going. Show some passion, or be like the rest at the Library, but then don't complain about them. (AAllen, you're the true exception with trying to fan the flames of winning...)

The Spartans are there on Friday and Saturday, this is a big rivalry, let's get some action going here! D needs to shut down their breakaways, and we HAVE TO BE STRONG ON THE PK!!! Comley's PP has some potential, let's hope it can get some action towards the net this weekend.

GO GREEN!

In full support of my local hockey program. Good thing it's bigger than one suit.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Let's hear it... What's the outlook for the second half? Not a bad GLI, can it carry forward? Will Yanakeff get more games? Will the Walrod/Reimer breakout goals help take them to the next level? I think YES to all, but what say you?

GO WHITE!

(let's make a plan to stay on the first page, even if it's just to do so)

This is not to say MSU can do enough to end up with a good enough mark come March to make the round of 16 - the second half of the season will be every bit as rough as a challenge as the first (Michican x 3, Notre Dame, Miami for example).

But if we can bottle what happened in the 3rd period against CC and actually use it, things are certainly looking up for a respectable finish.

Yes, the switch to Yanakeff after it went 5-2 was positive and I'm not discounting its effect on our overall play, but I think you can also attribute a 15-2 edge in SOG on the solid hitting the Spartans did the first two periods. CC was a bit gassed. There's something to remember going forward.

We've had decent goaltending, but the obvious hole at this point is in our own end, particicularly in the corners. Forecheck is killing us - that was in evidence last week. More help from forwards on the back end.

It was wonderful to see the scoring spread out at the GLI. That's also a good sign. And there were no cheap goals on Thursday but instead came from quality scoring chances. Maybe too early to tell, but I don't believe "confidence" on offense will be an issue going forward.

Leveille getting going and lighting the lamp is really important. Gazely going to the net like he did recently is also needed. He needs to be an unofficial captain as a senior by setting an example in being relentless. Defense needs to stay involved in the offensive zone, and overall we needs guys to keep crashing the net. We also had some really good play from our freshman last week.

We have 16 games remaining. Realistically I see 4 - 6 losses. It would be great if MSU can get a CCHA playoff series at home (and that will take a little work) and then who knows.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Worth posting again, I guess.

If you're a student, and you're heading to Munn tomorrow...

1.) Please stand with and participate with the student section. Most of the students will still be enjoying their break tomorrow, and the student section will need as much additional manpower as possible...
2.) Familiarize yourself with the student section chants at this link. Take particular note of the "Go green!" and goal chants.

That is all.

But sad that it's come to this.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

This weekend can really set the tone for the remainder of the year. If we get thumped again then i'll have pretty much lost all hope. I however, do not think that will happen.

We skated pretty well in the GLI and i think the time off did our squad some good. We know that we can be a darn good team and I think tomorrow night is where we really show it.

If we can get some solid goaltending then i feel pretty alright about this weekend.

I think we win tomorrow night. Not sure about saturday but beating michigan at home is important. The fan base has no faith in the team right now and getting a good win over uofm at home will be a good shot of adrenaline.

I think a first round bye in the ccha playoffs is out of the question but if we put together a solid second half then i will be happy regardless.

Don't tar everyone with the same brush. There are plenty of us who are out there talking up the team, asking friends if they plan to attend games and actively cheering at the arena. Not to mention those of us who spend significant amounts of money traveling to road games ... Not posting on a message board is no indicator of how some of us support Michigan State Hockey. If anything, it's an indicator of busy lives - into which we fit our commitment to the Spartans.

Just trying to keep some banter up. Come on once a day and post something, even if it's to say that you're thankful MSU isn't SCSU... (check it out...) And see what happens when the picture is painted with a broad brush, the bristles start to speak. (ok, it's Friday and my mind is just a bit frizzed...) I know there's support, but let's just keep talking about it. Post something... ;-)

GO GREEN!

edit: I hated having to go to the third page to find this.. so gotta rile up the masses. nothing personal

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

I agree that a first round bye is going to be near impossible. This team should be thinking about home for the first round, and that will be hard as well. However... the key (I think) is to be digging and fighting for every crumb while getting ready to battle through the playoffs. I hate to use scUM as an example, but look at what they pulled off last year. The Spartan Nation needs to be thinking the same thing. If they lose a game, focus on the effort. If they give up, then kick their behinds and remind them that they represent more than just themselves.

I have hope, but I don't expect them to go undefeated from this point, just fight for every chance.

They represent The Hat.

Look for a Ferret Party tonight in the SE corner.

I understand your use of last year's U-M run as a means to offer hope- but the circumstances are not the same. Last year's MSU team collapsed- and from the outside it appeared that certain players became disgruntled and checked out long before declaring for the NHL-culminating in that playoff debacle at Munn. I don't see any difference right now in their collective effort, except MSU has three NHL draft choices + Krug that potentially *could* leave, but probably aren't ready. Many are pointing at Comley- and only you guys can answer that. The roster talent level suggests that it should be better than the record indicates, but maybe not at the same level as MSU fans expect, which means that they cannot take any effort breaks.

Conversely, Michigan under performed all last season, even with their 12-13 NHL draftees. They finally matched effort to their talent at the end of the season. Big difference from what you guys are facing.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Anybody want to take a stab at the number of UM fans that'll be in the building tonight? I'm hedging my bets at around 3,000.
