Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

InconsistantWe have no physicality on the ice. We get *****ed off the puck as if we are mites.

Peanut - WE? I seriously doubt if you've been out there taking or giving the hits. Now, if you want to say THEY, then I guess that's another thing all together. Heck, even the illustrious coach throws the players under the bus and says "they" and rarely "we". I guess it's refreshing to see someone willing to take the blame with the players, so I applaud you Mr. Peanut for being one of the few team players on the forum. Now tell us how the coaching staff is correcting the problems in practice, please.

There was an article in the state news today about the Cold War and it's significance. There was a quote from Hollis that I found strange and somewhat telling. He first mentions being surprised that the Cold War game sold out, which is fine because it was a novel idea and nobody was sure what to expect. He then says that he never expected everyone to actually stay and watch the entire game...uhhhhh:confused:

Like he didn't think it was actually going to be exciting or any sort of truly special event or something. Quite a little window into how our current athletic director may feel about the importance of our hockey program.

It might not have any sort of significance at all but I know that some around here have been quite critical of Hollis' handling of hockey matters so i thought i would share it.

EDIT: Besides that, it was an interesting article, nevertheless.

I stand corrected. As a fan I feel as if I am out there with the team. Sorry for the over exuburance. I have no knowledge of the "inner wokings" of practice. I just base my opinions on the on-ice product.

If he had related having those feelings today it would be more disturbing to me. My hope is that he's come 'round. Since for him tomorrow's game is the 800 pound gorilla, perhaps the outcome will greatly affect his agenda over the offseason.

Are you sure Hollis isn't seeing MSU basketball v. Oakland at the Palace as tomorrow's 800 pound gorilla?

How Izzo's squad rebounds from last tuesday is of the utmost importance to the image of our university!

I can just imagine him being there and thinking "wow, everyone actually wants to stay and watch an entire hockey game? I figured most would have left at halftime."

Oh well, maybe we are wrong about our assumptions.

Meh, I refer to it as 'we' as well, usually. I think that when being critical sometimes, equating the effort and dedication that players put into practicing, training and performing as including yourself, might rub some people the wrong way. No worries.

I'm partial to broccoli, anchovies and brussel sprouts. As long as there's ketchup.

Can't speak for Hollis but the weather was real iffy that week. Perhaps that was what he was thinking of? IIRC, 3 or 4 days before the game the high was in the 70s. There were plans to play the game Sunday if the weather was bad then back to Munn if it couldn't be done outdoors. Weather turned out perfect for hockey and only the students left early. :)

Anyways, Big Chill tomorrow! One of my friends got some free tickets from his girlfriend so I get an extra one! I think am a little more confident in our chances than most of our fans but whatever.

Although, even though I have never really seen olympic ice be much of a detriment to us, and combined with our nice performance at Minny, I still feel like it gives michigan a tad of an advantage.

But I think we will perform very well.

I blame the new uniforms.

Tried to have fun, couldn't see crap, and had a really awful experience.

You know, I don't want to be one of those "Fire Comley!" guys. I really don't. I genuinely like the guy. But, for this group of kids - who were playing in the biggest game of their lives in front of a huge audience in attendance and watching at home, mind you - to play so horrendously on such a huge stage, I mean, as a fan... what am I supposed to think? It seems like we're regressing game-to-game.

This season is infinitely more frustrating than '08. This is a horrendous hockey team with good talent.

I will say it. There is now a permanent disconnect between the old man whose relevance to NCAA-tournament-level hockey is a thing of the past and the kids who are trying to find their identity today. It is time for a change. You can say "work in progress" and somehow convince yourself of its valididity but when will people finally see the string of broken promises, premature NHL contracts and ****ed off fans and wake the **** up? I'm so tired of just sitting back in my comfortably numb posture and hoping this is one long nightmarish learning experience. I'm sick of giving an arch-rival props and mailing in my loyalty card. The numbers scream at every alumn and significant financial contributor in terms too big to ignore. We had a good gig going Friday and Saturday nights that had people clamoring to get in on; they didn't care if it was SRO. Over the last 8 years we've just ****ed it away. Shame on you Hollis. Shame on all the short-sighted rubber-stamping board of trustees that decided a winning tradition wasn't worith preserving, so long as you didn't have to put a lot into how a once proud program can be turned around. Comley, your tired excuses don't work anymore.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

'Alright well, I guess i will tell my story.

I got hooked up with an extra ticket and went with my friend, his girlfriend and her family, who are all spartan fans. All dressed in spartan gear, we were actually not bothered at all by michigan fans which surprised me a little; not even the ones surrounding us during the game except for one older guy who kind gave us some **** when our goal got called off. He also spent the entire game ripping on Torey Krug because he thought he was Jake Chelios, even after Jake got the penalty and they said "# 42, Jake Chelios" and not # 44 who he was watching all game. He also made fun of Dean when he had to serve the bench minor since it meant he was a "benchwarmer" Besides that dude, the michigan people were nice. The lady at the gate seemed to make it a point to be very welcoming. Also, I met two really nice, pretty girls on the bus ride over there as well.:p

I actually really liked the Bighole from the outside. I wish spartan stadium was brick, but I wasn't too into the massive sprawl it had going on. I had a harder time seeing the action than i even thought i would. Also, the place was real quiet, even whenever michigan would score. I feel like I remember the Cold War having a lot more energy but i was also in 7th grade. An outdoor game every once in a while is nice, but please, let's keep the rest of our rivalry games in Munn/Yost.

I actually thought all the variations they do with the wave was pretty funny.

Onto the game. I thought 5 on 5 we did fine except for all of the odd man rushes we gave them in the 1st. Penalty kill obviously failed us and our inability to create consistent offense doomed us again. I agree, it is time for a change. Things are just real stale right now. Stagnant. I've always been behind Comley, and have some amazing memories from his years here but it's just time. This should definitely be his last season.

I guess i will stop now since this is getting long. But overall, it was mostly enjoyable because of my friend's girlfriend's cool family, the pretty girls i met on the bus and the real cute girl who took my order at Wendy's on the way home; not because it felt like a spectacle.

Several tings over the weekend.

1. I thoroughly enjoyed the Event.I could not see the game(in hind sight a Bargain!) I thought it was great support for the sport.
2. The game was as I expected. The Spartans can't play against this team as constructed. The game plan is so skewed that my dog could do better.
3. Who is Hollis? (pardon me I am new to this state and don't know all the players.)
4. As I watched I saw the team wither and fade out of the game. There seemed no inspiration from the top. These boys all have worked extremely hard to get to this point in their careers and it's a shame that they seem to get no support from the coaches.

I don't think I could add anything to this other than knowing who (what?) Hollis is.

Mark Hollis is our athletic director. He by all means does a fine job on the football and basketball side of things but hockey does not seem to appear very high on his priority list.

Thanks for the info. I still am soooooooooooo DEPRESSED over the team outlook.
