College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons

Re: College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons

So the lawyer who tipped off Tressel was a former OSU player. Unsurprisingly, as a lawyer, he behaved rather like an OSU football player:

In 1997, the Ohio Supreme Court suspended Cicero's law license for one year, following a highly publicized scandal in Franklin County Common Pleas Court. Cicero was found to have engaged in conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice and of failing to maintain a respectful attitude toward the courts.

The lawyer was accused of leading several lawyers, including an assistant prosecutor, to believe that he was having sex with then-Judge Deborah P. O'Neill, who had appointed Cicero to defend a client in a criminal case she was handling.

Cicero ultimately said he overstated his intimacy with the judge and that he and O'Neill did not have sex until she stepped aside from handling the case. O'Neill also admitted to the sexual affair.

OT: Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports Says More to Come

Charles Robinson, one of the investigative reporters for Yahoo! Sports, was just interviewed on the Waddle and Silvie show on ESPN Radio 1000 in Chicago. He stated that there are two additional high-profile stories he is working on, on which will break within the next few weeks and another that looks like it will break in August. Mr. Robinson was prodded fairly hard by Tom Waddle, but would not divulge any individual or institutional names. He was asked to rate the Tressel story on a scale of 1-10 scale, and gave it an 8. Mr. Robinson rated the story to be broken this month as a 6-7, and gave the late-summer story a 10-rating, without hesitation.

This ends any speculation that this was the "big one," even though most of us thought that already. And the plot thickens.....

This is going to get ugly quickly. First Oregon, then tOSU, now two more breaking stories including one that looks worse than Sweatervest-gate...the NCAA needs to take some drastic measures because this is getting out of control SWC style.

The NCAA will respond by suing Yahoo and try to get an injunction preventing them from filing the stories.

I've never been impressed with Yahoo! Sports news side. I also kind of hate this type of journalism. August? AUGUST?!?! I'd be ecstatic to even remember this whole fiasco in August.

Re: College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons

Yahoo Sports has been the ones breaking these stories while the supposed real journalists are looking the other way. They are the only ones willing to actually look into any of this, since everyone else knows where their bread is buttered.

And stories take time, just because they have the names doesnt mean they have all the facts. Plus it will be a bigger story in August as opposed to now when the NCAA will have months to sweep it under the rug.

Didn't you castigate Hammy on GPL for this exact same type of reporting? He had info, posted that he had the info, and wouldn't reveal the info until it broke.

Are you really comparing Hammy to Yahoo Sports? One is a (depending on your point of view) respected news organization and the other is a random guy on a message board with connections who was posting stuff to get the locals in a tizzy and get people to check out his blog. Yahoo (and the author) cant just throw out baseless accusations they will be sued and lose all their sources and their credibility Hammy doesnt have to worry about any of that...95% of the GPL crowd doesnt even know his real name. (I do :D ) Plus Hammy told a bunch of us anyways so his "I cant let this get out" schtick was BS from the beginning. He was stroking his ego not trying to break any real news.

This isnt even Apples and Oranges, this is Apples and Hockey Pucks.

Re: College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons

He volunteered for that, and was correct to do so. As we discussed earlier in the thread, it is best if Tressel's suspension matches that of the players involved.

Re: College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons

Tressel's suspension increased to 5 games.

I wonder if the NCAA will be impressed by him jumping on his sword. Normally, I'd say no and expect them to drop the hammer, but this is Ohio State football, so I expect them to commend Tressel - maybe even give him an award.

NCAA has no proof USC knew Reggie Bush was ineligible, except they claimed one assistant coach found out (no proof, their star witness wouldn't say he knew only that he "had to have known") USC gets banned from bowls for 2 years, loses 30 scholarships, all the juniors and seniors are allowed to transfer with no penalty, previous wins are vacated, coach is banned from the NCAA for I believe two years and with the show-cause penalty will never coach in the NCAA again.

NCAA has proof OSU knew their players were ineligible at the highest level, their head coach knew, cover-up, etc. 5 game suspension for the players/coach...

What a joke the NCAA is if they don't come down hard, the players should all be held ineligible for good, Tressel should be suspended for a season, and the wins should be vacated.

The NCAA actually has a smoking gun here, I doubt they notice it.

Ah yes, USC, the single most persecuted team in the nation. *yawn*
