College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

The USC boards have been in meltdown mode since Scam Newton first appeared to have impropriety. I think they've officially gone past meltdown mode with this Ohio State fiasco.

I'm of the opinion that its going to end up in court since the NCAA isn't even following its own rules for punishment. With Bush, they made up an entirely new rule to punish USC, saying Bush was "high profile." Then, when Scam Newton was caught, they said: "there aren't rules in place to punish Newton, this is a loophole we will try to close." What, nothing prevented you from making up new rules to punish USC, right? What stopped you from making up new rules (and IMO just enforcing your existing rules and declaring Newton ineligible.)

To show how biased the NCAA is against USC, USC self reported Dillon Baxter because he got a ride in a golf cart. It took over a week to have the NCAA reinstate his eligibility and he paid the value of the ride back to the guy who gave the ride.

Newton was declared ineligible by Auburn and reinstated in ONE day by the NCAA. After all the info they had on Scam's daddy and Scam, it only took a day? Really?

The appeal for USC happens in January. Expect nothing to happen. Then USC will sue the NCAA in federal court and we'll see what happens from there.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

Should be noted that it's not really the tattoo thing that's the big issue here, it's selling merchandise for cash.

The bigger issue to me is that these athletes clearly don't respect their schools nor their great traditions. I am no OSU fan. But I respect the fact that OSU is one of the most tradition laden schools in the US. These players lack school pride, and that's really sad. Ask most Buckeye players about their most prized possesion, and it's the gold pants charms they earned by beating Michigan, a tradition that started in 1934. To these guys, the gold pants are just another trinkett to be sold off. The traditions matter less to them than cash or tattoos. Woody Hayes is spinning in his grave. If I were Tressel, I would never let them play for me again. Some things should be worth more than money.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

Oh jeeze... What does the NCAA have to gain by screwing USC? Absolutely nothing. What reason do they have to screw USC and not Auburn or OSU? Your whole crusade is laughable at best.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

I'm just pointing out facts. If you want to point out where I'm wrong, go for it.

But the SEC has been getting away with some insane crap for a long time. The NCAA is protecting their tv partners by keeping Auburn in the title game. This Ohio State nonsense is yet again, to protect the TV partner, not to help the NCAA. It's why they are heavy on punishment on past transgressions and weak on current decisions. Nothing to upset their tv partners.

I dont think it is laughable...in fact on the surface it is quite plausible. Ever since Sweatervest got to tOSU there have been pretty reputable rumors about players getting benefits from boosters but nothing ever gets done. Cam Newton's father admitted to trying to get six figure payments for his son to play at a school and he ended up at a different school that has the worst pay for play reputation of any school since the SWC broke up. USC had a players family get a house and maybe a car. Why is USC the only one that is having games vacated and bowls banned. Why are OSU players playing in the Sugar Bowl and why did Cam win the Heisman and Auburn have a shot at the BCS Title?

Whether it is intentional or not, USC is getting bent over here pretty badly. Their crimes are no worse than what went on at the other schools yet here we are. If they do lose their appeal, they should sue in Federal Court...they probably wont win, but mayhaps the negative press will make the NCAA to do something to make it seem like they care more than they do now because their punishments and rule enforcement is about as bogus as the NHLs at this point.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

One last bit of humor:

The policy for suspending withholding conditions for bowl games or NCAA championship competition recognizes the unique opportunity these events provide at the end of a season, and they are evaluated differently from a withholding perspective. In this instance, the facts are consistent with the established policy, Lennon said.

That's why players who never played with Reggie Bush are denied that chance right? Thanks for a two year bowl ban so guys like Ronald Johnson and Allen Bradford, CJ Gable had their senior years end without a bowl game and guys who weren't even commits when Bush was at USC will miss their senior year bowls like Marc Tyler, Tyron Smith (if he doesn't declare early.)

USC I think is the only program where the NCAA actually relaxed the rules on contact and let other schools contact the USC players to urge them to transfer with no penalty. With all other cases, only the players were allowed to initiate contact.

But it's not biased against USC. Not even in the slightest.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

I'm not sure I have seen more irrational thinking from the media than I have seen from this story.

Mark May was on College Football Live saying that this was to protect the "NCAA's little darlings that are the Pac10 and Big10." He said if this was happening to anyone else, especially the SEC, they would not be playing in the bowl. Said if Mallett was the one doing it, he would not be playing.

Really Mark? The Pac 10 is a darling? So much of a darling that they took a dynasty and destroyed it by going back five years to punish one player? And always out to get the SEC? I know, I can't believe how hard they came down on Auburn and Cam Newton, it was almost sickening.

Then there was a guy on Around the Horn saying it was "suspicious" how it's conveniently only a five game suspension and ends in time for their road game at Nebraska. I was waiting for him to put on the tin foil hat after saying that.

Everybody is all up in arms about the not sitting out the bowl game. Honestly, I think the punishment the NCAA put out is a good one. If they are going to break the rules, suspend them for games that actually matter, not an exhibition at the end of the year.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Bowl Games are not NCAA Sanctioned?

I guess thats not the word Im looking for. I lost my train of thought to care. So if Im wrong, whatever.

They are, so I guess technically they are not exhibitions, but I guess what I'm getting it is that you could suspend them for a game that really only matters if you are #1 or #2 in the nation, or you could suspend them for a game that is needed to qualify for the game that does not matter unless you are #1 or #2 in the nation.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

Mark May has completely lost the plot...I guess Scam Newton plays in the Big 10 or Pac10...right? Oh wait.

I really really agree with this. To me, they've already reached a BCS Bowl, what does it matter really if they win or lose it? (Obviously it matters to a lot of people, but in terms of benefit? I'd argue not much).

On the other hand suspending them for next season where they could lose at Miami and to MSU could hurt them where it really hurts, by making it so they might not even make it to a BCS Bowl.

How does suspending Pryor for games he will not play (he is going pro now, he has no shot at a Heisman or a National title) punish him? He is going to skate on this as will anyone else who goes pro. Yeah that is really lowering the boom

They should miss the Sugar Bowl and 4 games next year if they get nailed for 5 games. Otherwise what is the point? And how exactly is tOSU being punished? Did they lose scholarships or Bowl Games because they obviously have little institutional control? Nope, they get to make their money on the Sugar Bowl and then lose players for a bunch of home games they could win with their second stringers anyways...yippie!

I bet tOSU is laughing their butt off right now.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't Ohio State already "made their money on the Sugar Bowl"? You get money for appearing in the game, not for your result on the field.

Suspending the players for the games next season directly impacts Ohio State's ability to make another BCS Bowl next year. That does hit them where it hurts.

Sorry I disagree...suspending them for the Big Ten season maybe...but against Akron...come on now. And still, the school is not being reprimanded in any way over this and it involves multiple players unlike USC. Plus, part of the reasoning behind the punishment is apparently OSU didnt spell out the rules well enough and yet THAT isnt even being punished.

Plus...as has been stated...any player that turns pro gets away with this scott free.

I am sorry but this is a farce. The NCAA is battling the NHL for biggest Kangaroo Court in sports.

Right, but now you're talking about different things. I'm not talking about the decision to punish OSU. I'm not talking about the reasoning behind that punishment. I'm not talking about how their punishment compares to USCs. I largely agree with you on all those things.

What I'm saying is: the NCAA made the decision to punish them. Now, the discussion we were having is over which punishment hurts more. Tell me, what does OSU gain by beating Arkansas? They already have their bowl payout. If they win, they get what? The ability to sell some cheap Sugar Bowl Champs merch? If they lose, it's another Tressel loss to an SEC team in a BCS Bowl. It's easy to say, "Oh, they're only missing games against Akron." But that ignores the games they are also missing. Big games on the road in Miami and against Big Ten champ Michigan State.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

Then why didn't they just make it 6 games and include the bowl game? Why weren't they forced to vacate all wins this season since the players had been ineligible since 2009?

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

The Sugar Bowl money is irrelevant since the Big Ten pools their bowl payout money and doles it out equally. If OSU got booted out at the last second(which would never happen), wouldn't Michigan State be next in line anyway?

That "exhibition" was so important that they couldn't be suspended for it. Can't leave the sponsors and the school looking stupid on a big stage, dontcha know. Its a farce... if they didn't want to cost them this season then they didn't have to do the crime. They should be suspended for 4 games next season... one less the number of games they'll be suspended THIS SEASON.

The non-suspension for the Sugar Bowl has everything to do with the sponsors and ad-buyers not wanting a 45-10 dud with lower than expected ratings. The BCS and ESPN don't want to end up giving out a bunch of freebies later in the year because the ratings sucked to start with and half the tv's getting shutoff at halftime with OSU down 28-7.

Granted, Arkansas is in the SEC, so OSU needs all the help they can get.

Oh come on! Miami stinks hence why they fired their coach. That game may LOOK like a tough game but it isnt. And Michigan State may have been co champs, but lets not pretend they were some dominating force in the Big Ten...look at their losses for Pete's sake. tOSU is losing players for Akron, Toledo, Colorado, MSU and Miami. 4 of those games are at home and the road game is at Miami. If they aren't 4-1 after that everyone will be surprised. This suspension won't stop them from making a BCS Bowl, especially with the new divisions.

They were not punished.
