College Football 2024

I remember way back when the PAC-12 used to always kick the Big 10 butts in the Rose Bowl, I had a Big 10 fan tell me that’s because all the players from the Big 10 school get too distracted by the Southern California girls.

Seriously. He really used that as the excuse.

I know we are joking about it, but I really see the problem being bad preparation. Which really frustrated me with Bo- it should have taken 1 or 2 bad losses in the Rose Bowl to know what it took to win that game regularly. But he only won a couple of those- and really blew it when he lost his mind over a really bad call in his last chance. I really think I saw why Harbaugh's team in Miami was so very bad, and they were better the second time against TCU, but full in it last year.

We make excuses, but there are real reasons that coaches should really focus on fixing every season. If IN can keep at the top of the B1G, I fully expect them to do better next year as the staff figures out what it takes. I kind of also think Michigan will take a few seasons to figure it out again- but it will always be up to the head coach to make sure his assistants are dealing with the issues of the past teams and attempts.

Why? Playoffs/Tournament are how every single other championship is decided- including DIAA, DII, and DIII. Why can't the big schools do the same thing?

And the subjective nature of the seeding is the same for the other divisions, as well as it ls for most other sports.

The group putting this together use a system like you want to, deciding who had the best record and best schedule- just because the line up isn't what you think it should be doesn't mean they are not trying to make that happen. Heck, in one weekend, both the concept that IN may be overrated AND the SEC is overrated came true.

Also, I think trying to get the best X# of teams regardless of record is bad- bama should be punished for losing 3 games- especially losing to Vandy. And one of the other teams they got beat by were steamrolled.

Lastly, as I pointed out before, these outcomes are hardly unique- bowl games are regularly blow outs, the BCS top 2 were regularly blow outs, and there were regularly blow outs when it was 4. I don't see that as an indicator of a flaw in the system, but a flaw in the teams and how they prepared.

The only actual alternative to a playoff kind of system is bowls and then opinions. No going back to that, now.

I'll go back to my example. If Minnesota and Wisconsin play the same schedule with the same results except Minnesota beats Wisconsin four times in the regular season and Wisconsin beats Minnesota in the Frozen Four finals, who is the better team?

Where I think my goal diverges from most is that I want to pick the best team as champion.

Wisconsin. They did it when it mattered more. That's easy. Just like the years when Georgia beat Bama for the SEC but Bama beats Georgia for the NC- one gets the SEC title, the other the National. That's how it works. Do we squabble if Buffalo beats KC in the regular season but KC beats them in the playoffs? I don't think we ever do. Nobody is going to pretend that Michigan is better than Denver if Michigan swept during the regular season but Denver wins the NC over Michigan in OT. Just like if there's a regular season rematch of the championship game that it's somehow revenge for losing in the most important game of the season.

So I'm not really understanding what the issue is.

If you just want to "pick" a team, then just pick one. They can be "your" champion.

I can’t believe you all have fallen into ESPN’s propaganda trap. The playoff is fine, the right teams were chosen, blowouts, especially at stadiums that are notoriously difficult to play at, will happen. Don’t let ESPN gaslight you because they’re upset the conference they’re paying $3 billion didn’t get as many teams as the conference they don’t broadcast did.

Honestly, the only change that should be made is to remove byes for top 4 ranked conf champs.

Those champs get an autobid for sure but the current setup creates opportunities for 2 rounds of blowouts.

Everything you have mentioned after the first paragraph, which I fundamentally and vehemently disagree with, I have addressed in prior posts.

Assuming this directed at me, I think you've misunderstood my point. This isn't a reaction to this year, I've held this position for as long as I can remember. Generally the right teams here got selected, but I'd probably get rid of autobids because of the issues I have with the randomness of single elimination games.

So you have issues with how the Stanley Cup, Super Bowl, World Series, Frozen Four, etc are all decided? They use a playoff system to decide who is best. And sometimes the winner isn't the technically best team.

Sorry, I really can't understand the reasons. You need to explain what is so bad with a playoff kind of system.

How do you fix the "randomness" of single elimination games? The only places where that doesn't happen is MLB, NBA, and NHL for pros and college BB and SB. Everyone else has single elimination games where there are constantly upsets. Let alone, even with "best of" series, there are very regularly upsets.

Especially for games where it's physically impossible to have multiple game playoffs, or reasonably with time constraints impossible to have a season finish.

So you want either a 8 team or 16 team tournament? Or do you just want the "top 4" teams to get a bye- however those are decided.....

Stanley Cup and World Series not as much. Super Bowl, Frozen Four, and CFP yes. All are exciting postseasons, but they aren't very good at determining the best teams. Which is my preference.

I've already explained it numerous times. The randomness of single games aren't very good at determining the best teams until you get to large numbers of games. I don't know why this is hard to understand.

You play enough games and consider the entire body of work using a method that is as objective and comprehensive as possible.

Watching the Famous Potato bowl- I really wished that BSU got a home game against one of the bigger teams- I don't see them putting up much of a fight against PSU.

I'm not a fan of this, as I didn't see it as a big step up. But the whole Bowl Season has been on a decline anyway, so this isn't so bad.

Well, even when the #1 team is clearly the #1 team playing the sub #16 team, that has not prevented a 4-1 upset. So even knowing all of that doesn't make sure that the "right" result happens. You should be well aware of that. The only "solution" is to have a series- which is a little much to ask college hockey. Let alone football- remember a low seeded wild card team has won the SB before.

Heck, the outcomes of the last weekends FB games were spot on- no upsets at all. Just teams giving up.

Seems like your issue from the "randomness" are upsets. They haven't happened, yet.

Because it makes less sense to just name a "champion" as opposed to making them play for it. There have been more than one named champion in college football season when they did it that way. And at least one very questionable one in BYU.

Not possible in a collision sport played weekly by human beings, and Americans don't want to decide a champion like the English Premier League.

It wasn’t directly solely at you. It was directed at all of the people in here arguing the inane points.

Look, there’s 134 FBS teams. Unless we want every team to play 133 games there has to be some kind of playoff to decide a champion. There’s always going to be some sort of argument about who gets left out, at least now the argument is about which 2-3 loss team is left out instead of leaving out a 0-1 loss team

And no you can’t get rid of the autobids because winning your conference has to mean something.

We haven’t gotten through one season with this format, let’s maybe pump the brakes on “this isn’t working” talk.

Ruh-roh.

Georgia quarterback Carson Beck will miss the remainder of the season with an injury to his elbow on his throwing arm suffered late in the first half of the Bulldogs' 22-19 overtime victory against Texas in the SEC championship game earlier this month.

In Beck's absence, sophomore Gunner Stockton is expected to make his first college start in a College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchup against Notre Dame at the Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on New Year's Day

They did play. It's called the season and post season.
