Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

Just watched the morning rant on espn about the process that chose the four teams. The last thing was to have 8 teams.

But they don't get that it would fix little, since 3 of the probable would be from one conference.

Sure, that will fix everything. Nobody will argue endlessly over that.

The major justification is because there are 5 major conferences and only 4 make it...but yeah, there will be endless debate no matter how big the field is because thats what sports talk lives on.

Agreed. Eight wouldn't fix anything. There are four teams with a legitimate resume to be considered this year. The four they chose. They all played tough schedules with one or fewer losses (though Washington had an embarrassingly bad non-conference schedule and I could see an argument about Clemson playing a somewhat weak schedule relative to the other three). Western Michigan played one of the easiest schedules in the nation (106, 118, 99, 123 - Massey, Sagarin, KRACH, Coffey (which is fairly close to the composite)). They won them all, but I firmly believe that winning alone isn't enough. You need to win against better opponents. I understand the argument that teams like Western have a tough time scheduling quality opponents, but that shouldn't mean we dilute the championship contender pool by elevating them.

If we had gone to eight, I think you would end up having four teams from the Big Ten in there. Great for us this year, but if it were the SEC, we'd all be whining and *****ing endlessly about it. Add to that, you have a bevy of teams that could argue they are deserving of a spot: Michigan, PSU, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, WMU. All teams that have lost at least two games (save for WMU), and all but WMU lost to teams in the top four already. Wisconsin lost to OSU, Michigan, and PSU. Should they be excluded because they already lost to over a third of the teams in it?

You could put in all of the conference champs and a couple of autobids, but then you get teams that have zero business near the title game vying for it. It's the reason I despise single-game playoffs to determine the champion.

Honestly, if there was a year in which we should just crown a national champion without a playoff, this is it. Alabama, by every possibly measure, is clearly the best team that played all year. I've never seen a year where the #1 team has a nearly unanimous consensus among the ratings methods: http://masseyratings.com/cf/compare.htm . 90 of the 91 advanced ratings systems give Alabama the #1 spot. 100% of all AP and Coaches polls voters went with Alabama. The only blemish on their record is winning by only five at Ole Miss and allowing 43 points.

Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

The one positive I see about going to six or eight is similar to how I felt when the college hockey went from 12 to 16 (really 14 because of autobids). I used to feel bad for some of the teams that didn't make it; now I don't because I don't think the teams that didn't make it have a solid argument to be in.

This year (despite the fact I hate both programs) I felt bad that Penn State and Michigan got shut out. Both proved on the field that they could really compete with any of the four that were in. If either had won, I might feel they were the best team, not just because of a fluke performance, field conditions, or bad luck.

This year, my cutoff would have been six; Oklahoma and Wisconsin, sorry, you didn't deserve to be there. And overall, I'm fine with four, because I think they got the right four.

I think you're wrong on Oklahoma, I completely agree that Wisconsin doesn't belong, especially if PSU, Mich and OSU are all in...UW had their chance to beat those teams and didn't...on the other hand, Oklahoma won a power five conference and hasn't lost a game since september.

Are you saying Pac 12, Big Ten, SEC, ACC, Big 12 Champs plus 1 at large is the best? I think you might be right...

Yeah, reasonable people can disagree on the Sooners. If Houston had been what they looked like rather than what they turned out to be, Oklahoma should get props for scheduling two tough OOC games rather than one tough OOC game and two pasties like most major programs do. As it was they played one less patsy than most programs.

Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

Mich/OH St, Aub/Ala, BYU/ Utah(the blood war no one knows about) are all nice games but Army/Navy is the rivalry game I look forward to every year. In '72 the ship I was stationed on was over in the Mediterranean and we(officers hung out too) got to watch the game on AFN. Army has a pretty good D and Navy's starting QB Will Worth is out so it should be interesting.

A little history:

This is the 117th meeting between Army/Navy.

Navy leads the series 60-49 with 7 ties.(Navy has won 14 straight, 17 out of the last 19) 10 times the game wasn't held.

GO NAVY, BEAT ARMY!!!!

Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

SDSU and NDSU game. NDSU causes a fumble that left the QB's hands and flew back five yards in the air. Goes to review for if the QB was down or if the ball was recovered in the endzone for a touchdown. Instead of asking those questions, the announcers go to their stock of talking points and focus on if his arm was moving forward when the ball came out, apparently ignoring the fact the ball didn't even move forward.

Watching that game(that and college hoops). NDSU had a 20 play drive to score a TD before the half.
