Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

SOS matters if you win the game. But why should Oklahoma bother playing ohio state and houston when they could have just scheduled like washington did?
Exactly. I believe ooc scheduling is made a few years in advance but you can guarantee that Patsy U will be getting a bunch of phone calls down the road.

Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

If you're not a name program, you can't schedule easy games (Baylor). If you are a name program, you can (Washington) It's that simple.

one of the best comments I heard on SOS was that Michigan scheduled Colorado when that was supposed to be an easy game and Washington scheduled Rutgers back when they were good.

That's a fair point. But picking washington does at least lead to a possibility of teams trying to put together a weak nc sched.

Ultimately, I think if a team chooses that route, they better bank on winning the conference championship, otherwise (hopefully) the committee has the option to look elsewhere.

If you schedule a more difficult season, you can afford to not have the conference championship. See: Ohio State.

I think the committee chose the correct teams. I also think they can use this year's selection as a good example going forward, using the points I made above.

But you still have to win your conference if you go that route.

I think we've learned the key to the playoff is:
1) Only have one or less losses
2) If you do not schedule a non-con big match-up, you better win your conference (Washington)
3) If you do not win your conference, you better schedule a big non-con (Ohio State)
4) Only schedule one big non-con, because even if you win your conference you can't recover with a conference title by losing two or more (Oklahoma)

Even then, you have to be lucky about what happens around you. OSU only got in because two Power 5 champs had two losses. Last year they weren't getting in because only Stanford had two losses. In 2014, six* Power 5 champs had one or less losses, so it all came down to SOS leaving Baylor and TCU out.

Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

I did enjoy hearing the chairman say in regard to Oklahoma that their defense wasn't as good as these other teams. Don't usually hear them get that specific.

Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

Do we factor in that the Pac12 plays a 9-game conference schedule, as opposed to 8, when saying their team has a weak OOC resume? I mean, we can't all play The Citadel four times at home.

Big Ten just went to nine and instituted the no FCS rule. Pac 12 could do something similar. Instead Washington already has an FCS team on the schedule thru 2020.

Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

Big Ten pulls in $18 million for their NY6 bids. Six for the semifinal and four each for the others.

Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

What is Rutgers' share? :)

Could be less than what everyone else is getting, actually. I know the new members get less TV money for a period of time after joining (I think this is Nebraska's last year), but not sure if that applies to bowl money, too.

Thanks to WMU the MAC schools get an extra 333k.

Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

So how about the fans of the more obscure schools?

Eastern Michigan is going to their first bowl in forever.

Idaho gets one more bowl before going down to the fcs. (They still have one more chance next season, but given 3 winning seasons since the mid 90's, well)

Who else?

Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

Old Dominion going to their first ever bowl, against EMU. UTSA also in their first ever bowl game.

North Texas, historically the worst team in the NCAA video games, is in the postseason at 5-7, in a rematch against Army, who could also only have 5 bowl eligible wins with a loss against Navy next week.

Miami is also in after starting the season 0-6, finishing 6-6.
