College Football 2010: Dude, Where's my Conference?

Re: College Football 2010: Dude, Where's my Conference?

You obviously missed the part where I did break them up as evenly as possible. You have five teams for two divisions. I have them three and two. Also, your geography isn't pretty. You have the westernmost team and the easternmost team in the same division.

I didn't miss your breakdown. I just put two seperate posts into one so it looks like both are aimed at you. :)

Geography means nothing unless its a rival. I assume travel within the Big Ten is not a consideration.

Re: College Football 2010: Dude, Where's my Conference?

Michigan and OSU should just be in the same division. So they're playing for a shot at the conference title instead of for the title itself like in years past. Somehow Florida-Georgia and Texas-Oklahoma survived such an indignity.

I think such a rivalry game probably hinders a rematch if they're playing each other yearly anyway.

The geography for a breakup doesn't mean much if you don't want it to. The ACC doesn't use divisions outside of football, for instance. The Big XII didn't either, while the SEC did.

I still don't think that matters because the number of years they play each other where they are both at the top are going to be somewhat numbered. Take that and the fact that a single loss could cost a team their division championship. So playing the OSU-Michigan game would probably mean one team does not make it to the championship.

True, but I think the big ten will likely have the teams broken up geographically and I think the way I broke it up is aligned with how the big ten would like to see it. But that's IMHO.

And if you want to do basketball divisions, the way I broke it up still works. The competitive balance is shifted somewhat to the east, but that's fine. There's so many basketball games as is that you'll probably play everyone at least once as is.

Ah, ok. Makes sense then. ;)

Re: College Football 2010: Dude, Where's my Conference?

Let's be really radical...

BYU
SMU
Notre Dame

what other religious school has football?

Did someone mention Baylor as leaning?

Then we can have the offical face off to supremacy over God. :D

I'm sure some of the current "minor" schools would step it up given the offer to rule the hearts and minds of the US....

Although, probably only just apply to the Christian world, since I'm not aware of a Jewish or Muslim primary school in the US that has D1 football.

Re: College Football 2010: Dude, Where's my Conference?

Why would Minnesota want to protect a game with Northwestern?

I hope you meant Wisconsin.

Seperately, the biggest issue the Big Ten has in division alignment is the balance of power. If the power teams are Michigan (historically), MSU, Penn State, Ohio State, Nebraska how do you break them up evenly and keep the most old rivals?

I would say this is as close as you can get. You could switch an Illinois for Northwestern if it made sense. I think Iowa and Nebraska need to be together. They are automatic border rivals and you would want to build that up.

Balance D1
Michigan
Michigan State
Ohio State
Illinois
Purdue
Indiana

Balance D2
Penn State
Nebraska
Minnesota
Wisconsin
Iowa
Northwestern
Nothing against the Spartans, but I don't think they belong with the other four teams you're listing as the traditional power teams in the Big Ten. I'd certainly throw Wisconsin in as the 5th over MSU.

Re: College Football 2010: Dude, Where's my Conference?

Folks, ... twelve ... like the CCHA before UNO left.

Three clusters of four:

Pac-10 (or so)
UAz, ASU, UU, CU
UCLA, USC, UCB, LJSJU*
UW, WSU, UO, OSU

Big-10 (or so)
UN, Iowa, UMn, UW
NW, UIll, IU, Purdue
UMi, MSU, OSU, PSU

In FB:
You play everyone in your cluster, everyone in a second cluster, and half of the last cluster (nine conference games). You alternate "second" cluster and "last cluster" each year.

How do you pick who plays in the conference title game, then, with 3 clusters/divisions?

That wouldn't even be an issue. Only conferences with 2 divisions are allowed to have exempt title games.

NCAA Bylaw 17.9.5.2 (c):
"The maximum number of football contests shall exclude....A conference championship game between division champions of a member conference of 12 or more institutions that is divided into two divisions (of six or more institutions each), each of which conducts a round-robin, regular-season competition among the members of that division."

How could you consider yourself a college hockey fan and leave BC off the list? :p

Kinda thought so but couldn't look that up here at work. Knew there was a reason conferences went to divisions the second they hit 12 teams.

MGoBlog took a stab at some divisions using a much better metric - winning percentage in the last 10 years and the last 20 years. Each of those factors is ranked 1-12, and then you try and balance accordingly.

http://mgoblog.com/content/divisions-funny-names

Code:
	Historical Record Historical Record
Bo 20 year Rank 10 year Rank Woody 20 year Rank 10 year Rank
Iowa 59% 6 64% 5 Michigan 71% 3 65% 4
Minnesota 43% 10 50% 8 Ohio State 78% 1 80% 1
Wisconsin 64% 5 67% 2 Michigan State 49% 7 49% 10
Nebraska 76% 2 66% 3 Purdue 49% 8 54% 7
Illinois 41% 11 38% 11 Indiana 38% 12 33% 12
Penn State 71% 4 63% 6 Northwestern 45% 9 50% 8
Average 6.33 5.83 6.67 7

So, winning pct over the past 20 years is, in order:

OSU 78
Neb 76
Mich 71
PSU 71
Wisc 64
Iowa 59
MSU 49
Purdue 49
N'Western 45
Minnesota 43
Illinois 41
Indiana 38

10 Years:

OSU 80
Wisconsin 67
Nebraska 66
Michigan 65
Iowa 64
PSU 63
Purdue 54
N'Western 50
Minnesota 50
MSU 49
Illinois 38
Indiana 33

So, yeah. In terms of winning actual games, both Iowa and Wisconsin would be well ahead of Michigan State.

Any way you slice it, the top half of the league is OSU, Michigan, Penn State, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Iowa.

That analysis makes a whole lot of sense to me. It'll be real interesting to see how the Big Ten and Pac Ten both divide up.

I heard that too and I burst out laughing. One of the funniest things I've heard from a sports figure not named ozzie or latrell.

Maybe he should pay some of the fines? Just maybe.

Pawn the heisman trophy, I'm sure someone will pay top dollar for that.

He didn't figure he had to say it because he has that Kardashian girlfriend taking care of the "Southern" for him. ;)
