College Basketball 2012-2013: The Year of the Big Ten?

Re: College Basketball 2012-2013: The Year of the Big Ten?

Minnesota is going to beat Indiana. WOOO HOOOO!!
Its a nice win. They could of got in to the tourney without it, but this helps.

They are #1 SOS and Conf. SOS, and #17 RPI. Those are pretty solid, even though they were 3-8 in last 11 coming in to tonight.

Re: College Basketball 2012-2013: The Year of the Big Ten?

Crap. I guess this ends any hope I had of the Gophers completing the amazing collapse of going from #8 in the country to not making the tourney. :(

Re: College Basketball 2012-2013: The Year of the Big Ten?

After last week and Zeller's antics I thought he was just a dirty player. After what Sheehee did last night I'm beginning to lean towards Crean teach guys to take a fall so they can get a fake technical called on the other team, or a free time out to break up momentum at least.

Even the announcers were saying how there are probably coaches telling guys to do it. If you can draw the foul with no negative outcome for you flopping why not?

During the timeout right before the flop there is video of Crean making an elbowing motion in the huddle. Many are saying that his him telling his players if they do something like that trying to keep the ball from you, go down, because they will have to look at it and maybe we get a foul call. Honestly, it wouldnt suprise me.

Put it on the ESPN thread but I watched the Kansas-Iowa State game the other night and I've rarely seen refs so dramatically influence the outcome of a game. There were two calls on Iowa State, including one where the Kansas guy falls on top of the Iowa State geu on the ground and they call the foul on the ISU player, that really looked like the refs had money on the game. I'm not a fan of either team...I was just stunned at what appeared to be two very questionable game altering calls on 50/50 situations in the last minute or so both go against 1 team.

Penn State is about to pop Michigan for their first conference win.

That call on the ISU guy on the ground was after he took a charge that wasn't called a block or charge. Insanely poor officiating.

Re: College Basketball 2012-2013: The Year of the Big Ten?

Missing a golden opportunity for a clever new name, the 7 Catholic Big East schools forming their own conference will <a href="http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/9000502/catholic-7-schools-keep-big-east-name-new-league-next-season-according-sources">keep the Big East name</a>.

Also, Xavier and Butler will join, adding to DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall, and Villanova. Creighton also mentioned as a likely addition.

Rick Pitino offers his opinion on who gets the name and the tournament at MSG:

"I think they should (get the name Big East)," Louisville coach Rick Pitino told USA Today on Thursday. "I think without question, the Catholic 7 deserves the Big East name. They should have, in my estimation, broken away from the football schools three years ago. I think they waited way too long. They should have been fed up a long time ago.

"You have some of the great, great traditions in college basketball. They should have gotten together, made their strong basketball league, sell their own deal and they should be the Big East. They should be playing in Madison Square Garden."

They are 3 short of a full set of apostles. I would name one of the divisions The Doubting Thomas division...any team leaving for another conference would play their remaining games in the Judas Division (winner doesn't get invited to tournament but gets the silver).

They can play their tournament final on Easter Sunday...of course the awards dinner would be before and would be the Final Supper 2013, 2014 etc.. Although, if they hold the final on Friday or Saturday, teams getting at large bids could claim they were raised from the dead.

Instead of MSG, I'd play the game on a floating court in the Hudson and have the players walk out to the court on a plexiglass gangway. The rims wouldnt be orange, they'd be gold and have led lights to provide a glow...of course the two finalists would parade through the city on their way to the game by carrying the baskets on their shoulders. Concessions would have 4 items: water, wine, loaves, fish.

Re: College Basketball 2012-2013: The Year of the Big Ten?

I was hoping for the Conclave Conference. At the conference tourney, MSG could have black smoke come out until the title game when white smoke would come out after the final buzzer.

That's a shame. I was looking forward to the Holy Ten (or 12 as it looks like they're trying to do). Or the Big Papal. I've heard rumors of Gonzaga but given their location and that the WCC is already Catholic-based with the exception of BYU, it's probably not likely.

So you're telling me there's another East-West Catholic schism? :D

Re: College Basketball 2012-2013: The Year of the Big Ten?

When Illinois isn't hitting shots outside, they're REALLY bad. Iowa should be up at least 20 but instead only stretched it to 11. Probably not good.

Re: College Basketball 2012-2013: The Year of the Big Ten?

Thank you, Villanova. Overachieving Marquette still has a shot at the Big East title - they just need to beat St. John's and they share it with whoever else wins from Georgetown and Louisville. Once again, they are ranked higher than I would like - which means they're going to lose on Saturday.

Big east officially splits. Hoping creighton gets an invite after winning the valley tourny this weekend.
