I think those experts that said Kentucky deserved to be in the NCAA tourney can shut up just about now. :D

To be fair, a lot of top NIT seeds falter early in the NIT. They are typically larger schools who expected to be in the NCAA tournament and disappointment tends to take a toll on teams.

so, let's say you are a really big fan of a particular school in Men's Division I basketball.

Which do you prefer? Losing in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament, or making the finals of the NIT?

(NIT = National Invitational Tournament; at one time it was a bigger deal than the NCAA though not for many decades now).

If it's a young team, the loss in the NIT finals. It did wonders for Syracuse when they won in 2003. They got to the semifinals in 2002 and they have pieces to go with Anthony and McNamara to get them over the hump.

If it's a senior-laden team, I'd take the loss in the second round.

As an Iowa fan, I would've taken a second round exit in the NCAA's this year rather than any results in the NIT.

However, Iowa will return everybody but their sixth man, so a deep run in the NIT could help this team learn and grow.

Your post almost exactly mirrored what Minnesota was saying about their team after the NIT run last year.

What are the chances Marquette men's basketball and Wisconsin men's hockey would both have a 2 pm game on Thursday? bah!!! I think I could easily make it home from work and the gym without hearing about the hockey game - but probably not the basketball game.

NCAA, hands down. Better to be in the big dance than playing with the also-rans battling for #69. It's like asking if you'd rather get blown out in the Rose Bowl or win the Humanitarian Bowl.

And did you really need to explain what the NIT is?

As far as the future of the program I would rather have the NIT championship. Those extra weeks of practice and games can be invaluable to the broth of your program. Just like even making the toilet bowl can have the same effect in football as opposed to not making a bowl.

Given that no team has ever won the NCAA Tournament the season after an NIT Championship (although Kentucky has won it a couple times two years after an NIT title - and CCNY won both the NIT and the NCAA Title in 1950), I would be inclined to say lose out in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament.

That being said, assuming I'm a really big fan, I would like to see my school play as many games as possible. I think you can go either way on this. Obviously, the school/program would always choose the NCAA route over the NIT...otherwise you might see more coaches declining bids to get into the NIT.
