College Basketball 2010-11: Headin' for Houston

Re: College Basketball 2010-11: Headin' for Houston

UConn's streak is light years away from being as good as UCLAs. There, I said it.

They lose about 1/3 of the scrimmages they have in practice vs. UConn men they find on intramural teams.

Call me when someone has a winning streak of notice in a men's sport.

Connecticut women win their 89th straight game.

*Yawn* Call me when they beat Tennessee.
Tennessee hasn't been that good the last couple seasons. Baylor or Stanford are really UConn's only competition.

Also Summit and Auriemma don't like each other that's why they don't play in the regular season anymore.

I have no idea how good or bad UCLA's streak was in comparison. How much competition was there in the early 70's?

The tourney was only 25 teams, which tells me there wasn't as much competition.

Of course, I wasn't around in the 70s, so it's not like I'm speaking from experience, but I really don't think it's in the same ballpark. Just accept the streak for what it is- a great accomplishment- and be done with it.

I'm not so sure size of the tournament is a great indicator either. From the Wiki on NCAA tournament expansion:
However, a few factors led the NCAA to expand the field. In 1970, South Carolina did not see any postseason play despite going 14-0 in the ACC and 25-3 overall when N.C. State won the ACC tournament and took the conference's only tournament bid. (The Carolina Coliseum was hosting the East Regional of the NCAA tournament, meaning South Carolina could not go to the NIT either.) In the 1971 season, USC was ranked #2 in the country with its only 2 losses coming against conference rival and #1 ranked UCLA, so USC could not go to the tournament. In 1974, North Carolina State and Maryland, both in the ACC, were ranked #2 and #3 respectively. They met in an ACC title game that N.C. State won in overtime, gaining the ACC's only tournament bid. N.C. State went on to win the NCAA tournament.

I wasn't making a claim it was better or worse. I don't think anyone here can fairly compare the two anyways.

Then the talking heads at ESPN, NOW, and the like to stop trying to compare the two. Calling it "the longest winning streak in NCAA Division I basketball history" is inviting a direct comparison with UCLA. Either women's basketball is a separate sport with its own records (in which case the comparison with UCLA should cease), or it's not, in which case they must be mocked for trying to act like their accomplishment is on par with, or superior to, what UCLA did.

Also, call me when they hit 240 or whatever that Trinity College's squash team is up to.

Re: College Basketball 2010-11: Headin' for Houston

How is UCONN"s insane streak "a feel good story" (yeah, someone on ESPN said it was a feel good story compared to St. Brett's streak ending. He'll be fired before new years.) if they're running up the score in every game? This isn't professional sports. There are two or three good teams in NCAA women's basketball. What's the compelling reason to beat everyone by 50 points every night? And more precisely, why should we care?

Re: College Basketball 2010-11: Headin' for Houston

Coach K passes Dean Smith for 2nd on all time wins list, and according to ESPN, could pass Bob Knight for the record this season.

Re: College Basketball 2010-11: Headin' for Houston

heartbreaking loss for Marquette last night. down by 1, they have the ball with 4 seconds left... and Darius Johnson-Odom trips and falls and time expires. doh. felt so bad for him I couldn't even watch the replay. just can't seem to get that quality win.

Re: College Basketball 2010-11: Headin' for Houston

I don't think I've watched this much women's basketball before in my life (as a whole).

Re: College Basketball 2010-11: Headin' for Houston

UConn down 8 with 2:30 left. Getting a little desperate now, they were down six and chucked up a three with plenty of time left. Turned into a long rebound and an easy layup for Stanford.

Re: College Basketball 2010-11: Headin' for Houston

It's over! Women's basketball will most likely fall into oblivion until March now.
