Colgate 2022-23

So I loaded the “game replay” on ESPN+, lo and behold, it also didn’t have the shootout. But it’s good to see we “won” last night and picked up 2 points in the standings.

Both games were well-played and hard-fought. We control our own destiny for 4th place again. And guess what - we host St. Lawrence in our next game, which will be more important than last night’s game.

ESPN broadcast also had sound muted on Colgate’s amazing go-ahead goal. That was #SCTop10 in my book.

Think we have the tiebreaker vs SLU, should it get there. Said it was a sellout, but tons of empty seats. What I would give to have that turnout every game. Shame on the students and lame PR. Not a fan of the new hire.

I think mature and objective hockey enthusiasts can separate an act or two of "working the officials" from a coach's overall contribution to teaching young men and improving college hockey in general...I think both Coach Vaughn and Coach Shaefer have been good examples of the latter two points...take a deep breathe Lynah Fan, get a better grip on reality...
That’s a fine view to hold and I wouldn’t necessarily disagree. But it’s laughable for anyone on here to single out Schafer as someone who complains about calls. I get some of you hate Cornell, but come on, you simply cannot make that claim when your own coach has been notorious for bitching about the refs. In Friday’s game, both Colgate goals came off of needless Cornell penalties—one roughing call after a whistle on a Cornell PK that gave Colgate a 5x3, and one offensive zone tripping call when Cornell was up 3-1 mid-third period. These were terrible penalties to take and the first one at least was a shocking call. Schafer blamed only his own players in his post-game remarks, not the refs, even though I think everyone was stunned the roughing call was not deemed matching minors. Would DV have reacted similarly?

Yes it was good to see a lot of people in the building last night, especially behind the goal where the bands were. I assume they were mostly Colgate students and, if so, I’d like to ask them why they only show up for the Cornell game. They should know that there’s a pretty big game coming up this Friday.

Great job by the team coming back from 3-0 and even taking the lead. I’m happy with getting 2 points for the weekend since I didn’t think we would get any points.

We need to get the Dipaolo line going. They’ve had a rough last 4 games and we can be a dangerous team going forward if they can get going.

Good job Iowa ! I like our chances for fourth, but that could change this Friday if we don't at least tie SLU.

I thought Saturday’s game was a ton of fun to watch. To be honest, I thought we were dead in the water down 3-0. Gotta give a ton of credit to the team for batting back against a quality opponent who is famously stingy in terms of chances allowed.

Speaking of which, I need to slightly disagree with Iowa on the style of play. I don’t think it’s right to say we play down to Cornell’s level; I think it’s more apt to say we play their style. And while their style is not for everyone, I appreciate it. There is a brutalist beauty there. It’s like playing the Ravens or 49ers in football; they just play the game a very different way. I dunno; I like iconoclasm.

And as for the crowd, the “sellout” seemed rather less than that. Good to see the students actually show up. That said, where is everyone else?

Do you think all those fans at Lynah are Cornell students/grads? I wouldn’t think so; I bet a lot are local residents. So, why is it so impossible for Colgate to market our games to the community? I think we must be doing a terrible job of that. Very disappointing.

Capacity for the rink is 2,222; my local pals said it was very crowded (wasn't there myself). Lots of people stand in the rotunda so it can easily be a sellout and not look that way on TV.

Basically we get about 1,000 locals for every game & the balance of our attendance is whether the students show up & if alumni are in town... there's no larger marketing effort to Caz/Utica/Syracuse etc (and many of the local towns have their own programs). Maybe a new AD can expand our footprint? Certainly wasn't on Nicki's agenda...

Marmot, I can’t argue with you on Big Red’s ‘style.’

Gate83, it was very crowded. My guess was 2,000. I question 1,000 for other nights. I think it is more likely between 500 and 750. I am not sure how you can have 50 people in seats just 15 minutes before puck-drop and wind up with 1,000 later.

With Utica and Syracuse both having minor-league hockey teams, I would think that those would be tough markets to crack. But you can never give up. Especially with Hamilton and surrounding local rural communities.

Utica and/or Syracuse usually have home games on Friday/Saturday so Colgate has competition with the AHL.

I think Colgate should give tickets away at the local high schools just to get people in the building. Terry Slater did that when I was in school in Hamilton way back when.

I think some season ticket holders(not sure how many there are) don't show up, plus some of them like to stand up on the railing, so maybe it doesn't appear sold out. Bob Mcgaugh(local pharmacy owner) used to have free tickets and other local store owners, (John's Shoe Shop) did too. I doubt we'll see 3,000 fannies in a soldout rink ever again !

The Utica Comets have sold out every game for years. Attendance says 3917, there are always at least a hundred empty seats. If you go near game time they will sell you SRO tickets for about half the price, think it was 18 or 20 dollars and you have your choice of great seats.

Giving comp tickets to youth groups is a way to get fannies in the seats and advance good will with the local community - i.e. Little League, Pop Warner football, even local youth hockey teams (if there are any). Back in the day this was common. Also, are the prices of tix holding people back? The Hamilton area is not exactly Greenwich/Darien, CT. Are single tix prices out of range of the local populace? I know they have been going up in recent years. And ESPN+ might be draining away some of the fan base. Idle thoughts...

A win tonight and we're in good position for fourth place for the bye. Two losses this weekend and it's possible we're one point out of eighth !

Huge game tonight. Want the straight up win but huge to get at least 1 point (to keep the tie breaker). Obviously 1 point is not what we want but it’s the first thing we need. A win tonight and we are effectively up 3.5 points on SLU for the final slot.

Which Colgate team shows up tonight, that is the question ? We lose tonight I think we have to beat Clarkson tomorrow. Rooting for the Big Red to sweep this weekend(hurt to say that).

Carter Gylander led Colgate on the ice tonight for the pre-game warm-up. Emil Zetterquist did the same for Saint Lawrence. And if we go to a shoot-out tonight, I will stay and report on it (just in case ESPN+ doesn’t).

Pep band is in the Haus.
Holding penalty against Colgate.
Saint Lawrence power-play goal by Justin Paul.
Holding penalty against Saint Lawrence. Killed.
Colgate pinged it off the pipe.
Halfway through the first, ‘Gate playing well. 7-2 SOG.
Saint Lawrence penalty… hand on the puck!
Penalty killed with no shots against.
The late Lennox Sterling’s family recognized tonight. He played hockey for ‘Gate and recently lost his life after battling cancer.
Saint Lawrence penalty. Killed.
Note: 42 people in my section which seats 108.

Colgate challenging for a major penalty.
Penalty against Saint Lawrence. 5 minutes. Cross-check (of Belpedio).
One minute in first period; four minutes in second.

Colgate 12, Saint Lawrence 2, SOG after one.
Saint Lawrence 1, Colgate 0, score after one.

Crazy goal for Colgate, but it counts!!
PPG by Alex DiPaolo from Reid Irwin and Simon LaBelle.
Colgate pinged it off the pipe. Clarkson Doug and I both thought it went in first; would love to see replay (Charlie ruled that it was not a goal).
Beautiful set-up by Colgate (tic-tax-tie) and Emil Z. made a great kick-save.
Colgate penalty for slashing. Killed.
Halfway through period. 19-6 SOG.
Colgate penalty. Killed.

Colgate 21, Saint Lawrence 10, SOG after two.
Colgate 1, Saint Lawrence 1, score after two.

Carter Gylander is coming up big in the third.
Another crazy goal by Colgate… by Arnaud Vachon. A rare mistake by Zetterquist as it trickled in behind him.

Ten minutes to go and Saint Lawrence is really putting the pressure on. 21-20 SOG with 7 minutes to go.

Saint Lawrence penalty with 3 minutes to go. Zetterquist for tripping. Killed.

29.5 seconds left. Unassisted goal by Saint Lawrence.

Saint Lawrence 23, Colgate 21, SOG after regulation.
Colgate 2, Saint Lawrence 2, score after regulation.

11.6 seconds left and Ross Mitton scored!!

SLU 24, Colgate 23, final SOG.
Colgate 3, Saint Lawrence 2, final score. :p
