Colgate 2022-23

Obviously pleased we won, but...1) and I've thought this for quite a while...I don't think our ice surface at the Class of '65 is particularly good; 2) I HATE the way MIH approaches a one-goal lead in third period play and the results of this approach has been obvious (and painful)...we sit back and self-negate the one advantage we have in most contests - speed...memo to DV: whatever you're doing, whatever you're teaching, please reconsider...3) frankly I don't think either team played that well...the effort was there but we need Brandon back ASAP and our young man from Shattuck...

GreenCoat, totally agree with you on...
a) our third-period strategy of just dumping the puck with a one-goal lead, and
b) the overall quality of hockey tonight.

I thought we played very well in the first period, but we just got beat when we were one-man down. In my opinion, Saint Lawrence won the second and third periods, despite us getting a goal in the second when they were one-man down. But even the play in those two periods wasn't great. And, fortunately, we got the OT goal with just seconds left, probably our most skilled goal of the three. Anyway, we'll take the win and move on.

Clarkson swept Cornell this year, so they are coming on and will be tough tomorrow night. We lost 4-0 to them in Potsdam, N.Y., back in November, so we really need a win tomorrow to hopefully avoid a potential tie-breaker with them at season's end.

Last question, GreenCoat, why do you say that our ice isn't that good?

DV told me a few years ago before, ironically another SLU game, that we were working on the pipes below the surface to improve the ice consistency...now this was 5 years ago, so my actual evidence is thin...it just appeared that there are more misplays on the puck by both teams when we play at home rather than, say, Appleton Arena...this may all be BS and more a function of sloppy play than anything else...6 X 5 is different from a 5 X 4 situation and I'd just like to see an occasional aggressive play by the forecheckers in the defensive zone...I may be wrong on this as well, but we have given away lots of points lately due to EAGs...something is not working...we need to get more shots ON NET and sometimes shoot quicker (not losing "space")...Bottom Line: take a win and a few breaks last night but get ready for a Clarkson team that is finally playing well...

Thought we dominated the first, score could have been 2-0 or more for us, Zetterquist was much better than his .897 SAA. More of the same in first ten minutes of second, we had six minutes of PP time then a major on SLU in last minute of second, so we had seven minutes of PP time in period. After four minutes a man up in third I felt SLU was the stronger team dominating the third and we were hanging on thanks to Gylander. Nice winner by Mitton with only twelve seconds left, he is having his best year by far.

Carter Gylander led the ‘Gate team onto the ice for tonight’s pre-game warm-up. Clarkson’s Ethan Haider did the same for his team.
64 people in my 108-seat section tonight. Clarkson travels well (with pep band).

Clarkson penalty for tripping. Killed.
Minutes later, Colgate’s Tommy Bergsland scored with a blistering shot.

Colgate 8, Clarkson 5, SOG after one.
Colgate 1, Clarkson 0, score after one.

Consensus is that tonight’s quality of play is much better tonight than last night (by both teams).

Beautifully set-up Clarkson goal five minutes into second period.

Clarkson penalty for tripping. Killed.
Colgate penalty for tripping. Killed.

Clarkson 16, Colgate 10, SOG after two.
Colgate 1, Clarkson 1, score after two.

Give the first period to Colgate.
Give the second period to Clarkson.

Colgate penalty. And Clarkson PPG.
Another Colgate penalty. Killed.
And a Clarkson penalty. Killed.
Clarkson penalty for holding. 6 minutes to go.
And a PPG tied it up (by Alex Young).

Followsd minutes later by a Clarkson goal.
And Ross Mitton tied it up minutes later.

Clarkson 22, Colgate 19, SOG after regulation.
Colgate 3, Clarkson 3, score after regulation.

Clarkson penalty for holding just into 3-on-3 OT. Killed.

Both goalies have saved the game for their respective teams. Outstanding.

Colgate 26, Clarkson 24, SOG after OT.
Colgate 3, Clarkson 3, score after OT.

Am staying in my seat in case ESPN+ ends coverage. Have enjoyed sitting with Clarkson Doug and Colgate Russ tonight. And sat next to former GE teammate Clinton Tim, whom I hadn’t seen since 1985. Wow!!

Colgate 3, Clarkson 3, final score. Colgate wins shoot-out, 2-0, though.
Colgate 27, Clarkson 24, final SOG.

We’re lucky Clarkson only got 1 goal in the 2nd period. Our forwards couldn’t get anything going. Only 2 shots on goal.

League points this weekend: Clarkson, St. Lawrence and Colgate each 4, Cornell 0. Who would have predicted?! Congrats to St. Lawrence and Clarkson for defeating Cornell at Lynah.

What a night!! Great game. Pretty even overall.
First time I watched a shoot-out. Still not a fan. Would rather see the two teams play Yahtzee at center ice to decide a winner. BTW, did ESPN+ carry tonight’s shoot-out?

It was Senior Night, honoring Anthony Stark (N.Y.), Arnaud Vachon (Ont., CAN), Colton Young (Alta., CAN), Matt Verboon (SUI), Ethan Manderville (Ont., CAN), and Liam Watson-Brawn (B.C., CAN).

Dinner at Seven Oaks Country Club before the game was excellent, too.

God bless Saint Lawrence for shutting-out Saint Michael’s team in whine country tonight, too. Whomever takes the fourth seed in this year’s EZAC Hockey tournament is going to earn it.

Great crowd and fun, rowdy Tech band, as usual. Score could also have been 3-0 Colgate after 1. Could not believe the meltdown between the first 2 periods. Had a great dinner at the CC too, Iowa. Left after the 1st period but yes, did watch the S/O on ESPN+. Don’t understand how points are awarded for that.

St. Michael…whine country…omg great post for a Sunday morning

Gylander had a save in OT where a Clarkson player was standing alone just outside the crease, open net and somehow he made a pad save on the player. I thought game over but he saved the game for us ! Thought he played very well this weekend.

Gotta mention SLU's Zetterquist, stole a point from us and three from Cornell, 1-0. Playoffs are going to be intense with that one or done opening round. We control our own destiny for fourth and a bye. Hopefully Harvard beats SLU in Canton next Friday night !

And congrats to Quinnipiac for winning its third, consecutive Cleary Cup. When was the last time they finished in the bottom half of the ECAC standings, if ever?! Meanwhile, Colgate has been a League member since its inception, and…

Even though we have the bye into the quarterfinals, there is something for Harvard to play for given Cornell's results. If we beat SLU in regulation, and Cornell is taken to OT by Brown, we will have clinched second place. The same scenario exists for our game against Clarkson although that doesn't help you guys necessarily.

On the Saturday afternoon of last weekend’s Cornell home game, the women celebrated their Seniors after the Brown game. I believe two were mentioned by the p.a. announcer as coming back next year for their fifth year (generating additional applause). I believe another will go to Penn State for her fifth year. Not sure that adds anything to this conversation, but I thought it was interesting.
