Colgate 2022-23

What do they say… being close only counts in horseshoes and hand-grenades?!

We played ‘em tough, but now we do need points tomorrow night as Saint Lawrence beat Princeton, 6-2, at home. We have our work cut out for us in Hamilton, but Saint Lawrence hosts PWR#2 Quinnipiac.

Lynah was jam-packed tonight, with a fair few wearing ‘Gate apparel. I saw Red and all he wanted was three minutes back in a 60-minute game, which doesn’t seem like an unreasonable request. he he he

Lastly, several Cornell fans said that they will see me in Hamilton tomorrow night, so hopefully the place will be rockin’. My guess is that it will start off chippy, as there was no love lost between the teams tonight (especially late in the third period).

It wouldn’t surprise me if St Lawrence beats QPac.

Cornell can skate and score in bunches. We’ll have to do another good job on our special teams tomorrow night in order to get a win.

Funny…..you mention Qpac a lot on this page….why? I’ve never read one post that talks about Colgate on the Qpac page. Maybe you should focus on your team and it’s 5th place position. Losing to Colgate after leading 2-0 is the biggest upset in College hockey this year

Q-Pac was mentioned because we're fighting SLU for the all important fourth place bye, that's all. While you're making moronic comments, why don't you do the same and stay on Q-Pac's thread .

second Shabby's observation...if you actually have been reading our posts re: Q-Pac you'd know that, collectively, we have a lot of respect for your program...BTW, the thought of SLU beating Q-Pac is not pure fantasy...the Saints generally play the Bobcats tough...rooting for Q-Pac, obviously, to take care of business tonight in Canton...

What does everyone think happens tonight? Watching yesterday, it seems almost impossible to get good looks at the Cornell cage. Their system is so solid in limiting opportunities.

Thank you Shabby and Greencoat. We don’t talk much about Colgate hockey here, do we?

Of course it benefits us if QPac beats St Lawrence tonight but now I almost want the Saints to win.

Almost. But not quite.

As long as we beat St Lawrence on Friday.

Marmot, since you asked, I expect an inordinate number of penalty minutes tonight and whomever takes more will lose. Clearly Cornell is the more physical team and I think Colgate players will just feel like they have been backed into a corner and will come out ready to get equally physical.

Cornell’s goalie is not great imo, but Gylander has been inconsistent all season. We’ve proven time and again that we cannot hold a lead. The beginning and end of each period has been open scoring season for our opponents.

Will Big Red chewing gum be thrown on the ice before the puck drops, as it was in the olden days?

Too bad about last night. I just have a feeling we will win pretty easily this evening 8-)

I hope it doesn't get too physical, we're just not big enough. Not our game, we are faster and need to capitalise on that. I thought Cornell's goals were weak, on the first one we passed it right to the Cornell player, the second was a wraparound and the third beat Gylander glove side and he wasn't screened. Besides that two and a half minutes I thought it was a pretty even game with both teams getting many good scoring opportunities.

We need to stop giveaways, score on powerplays, and Gylander has to have a stronger game tonight.

Vachon returned last night, finally.

Carter Gylander and Ian Shane led their respective teams out onto the ice tonight for the Colgate-Cornell rematch. In afternoon action, Colgate women won a close one at home against Brown on Seniors Day.

Cornell scores less than two minutes into the game.
Halfway through the period, another Cornell goal.
Third Cornell goal with 7 to go in the period.

Colton Young unassisted.

Nick Anderson scored with .4 seconds left in the period.

Cornell 9, Colgate 8, SOG after one.
Cornell 3, Colgate 2, score after one.

Ethan Manderville with PPG.

Matching penalties. 4-on-4.

Keopple in goal for Cornell.

Colton Young from Alex Young. Beauty.

Cornell scored with four minutes to go.

Colgate penalty. Killed.

Cornell 20, Colgate 18, SOG after two.
Colgate 4, Cornell 4, score after two.

Cornell penalty. Killed.

7 minutes to go. 4-4. And we’re playing not to lose, instead of playing to win. Just dumping the puck out of our end.

Cornell penalty. Killed.
Colgate penalty. Killed.

Cornell 28, Colgate 27, SOG after regulation.
Colgate 4, Cornell 4, score after regulation.

Tie after OT.
Going to shootout, which is when I leave.

I wish you didn’t. The ESPN+ feed completely went dead before the shootout. A “goodnight from Bristol CT” message appeared on screen as if the game’s “broadcast window timed out”. Our version of the Heidi game.

Oops! Sorry ‘bout that. Like the NCAA, I just hate having a team sport like hockey have a game determined by one-on-one play. Out of principle, I walk away. For the record, I see now that we won the shootout, 2-1.

I know Cornell is ahead of us in the ECAC Hockey standings and in the PairWise Rankings, but it never feels like we are ‘playing up to their level’ as it does with Quinnipiac and Harvard. Instead, it feels like we are playing down to their level. To quote a friend, it just feels ‘dirty.’ But, we were successful at it tonight (and nearly successful at it last night). And thankfully, as I expected, Saint Lawrence fell to the number two team in the nation this evening.

Finally, last night and tonight were fun college hockey games to watch, albeit nerve-wracking. Tonight I was surrounded by Big Red fans. To my right, three quiet gentleman who were students of the game. To my left, a pleasant woman and her goalie son from Ithaca. But she whined about every Cornell penalty. Every one. When things didn’t go their way, it was always someone else’s fault. It is just the Big Red culture, from Mike Schaefer on down. One row down on my left, three guys who cheered like crazy for Cornell (but who totally understood when I cheered loudly for ‘Gate). And one row down to my right, a Cornell couple with two very young kids, who were being taught how to yell ‘Sieve, Sieve, Sieve’. The future over there is bright.

Wow, never thought I’d see a fan of a Don Vaughan team criticize another team’s coach for instilling a culture of complaining about calls. Last weekend, while walking off the ice after a Colgate loss, Vaughn could be heard screaming at a ref, “you cost us the fucking game!” Last year in the ECAC playoffs, Colgate lost game 1 to Cornell, after which Vaughan cried to the ECAC head of officiating until they sent a new officiating crew to Ithaca for the rest of the series. Your own coach is the single biggest baby in the ECAC.

I think mature and objective hockey enthusiasts can separate an act or two of "working the officials" from a coach's overall contribution to teaching young men and improving college hockey in general...I think both Coach Vaughn and Coach Shaefer have been good examples of the latter two points...take a deep breathe Lynah Fan, get a better grip on reality...
