Colgate 2022-23

Scary stat...Cornell's powerplay is 22-54 for 40.74% in sixteen ECAC games this year. They were six for seven saturday against Union. If we don't stay out of the "sin bin" this weekend we're in trouble. The skating pylons have thirteen skaters 6-2 and over, normal size for them every year. They normally park two large players in front and just pound away and get alot of "dirty goals".

We are 15-62 for 24% on the PP good for second in the league. Penalty kill about the same for both teams. Still wondering where Vachon is, think GR said we had three players out last weekend, I can't find any info on the injured players, anyone help ?

we can pretty much attribute four distinct goals over the last four games that, frankly, have kept us barely hanging on to fourth place (and not threatening second place)...EAG by Harvard at 19:20 of third period; EAG goal by Dartmouth at 18:53 of third period; empty net goal with ZERO time left during second period of Union game; winning goal by RPI at 18:50 of third period...I think we can all see a trend here and it's been a very, very costly one...

Sorry Shabby don’t know what’s up with Vachon. We could sure use him. It seems that teams usually keep injuries top secret.

Ughhh. That's a 5-point swing right there.

Cornell scored four PP goals in 54 seconds against Union, and 2-3 after that, that's right, 6-7 on the PP !

4 PPGs in 54 seconds? How does that happen? Did Union lose their discipline or something against the Big Red? Bad Karma for scoring that 2nd period ENG on us???

Union got called for a 5 minute major penalty and Cornell got 4 goals on it.

Don’t look now but Cornell’s in 2nd place. And I have a feeling they’ve been waiting 11 months to get back at the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last year.

Okay, I submit that we still need to be concerned about Saint Lawrence.

There are basically four schools going for the fourth and final spot to get a bye in round one of ECAC Hockey tourney and home-ice in round two...
Colgate, Saint Lawrence, Princeton and Clarkson.

Of those four schools, Princeton has the 'easiest' remaining schedule, followed by Colgate, and then Saint Lawrence & Clarkson.

However, Saint Lawrence and Clarkson are on the road for just two of their remaining six games (thanks, World University Games).
Colgate is on the road three times, and Princeton is traveling to four of their six remaining games.

In my opinion, we don't need to sweep Cornell, nor necessarily split with Cornell... we just need to stay ahead of Saint Lawrence (and the others). The make-it-or-break-it game of our season may well be on Friday, February 17: Saint Lawrence at Colgate.

ECAC Hockey “Middle Four” (as of 02/06/23)…

4-Colgate… 28 points in 16 games, with remaining:
@2-Cornell, 2-Cornell, 5-Saint Lawrence, 7-Clarkson, @10-Yale, @10-Brown,

5-Saint Lawrence… 27 points in 16 games, with remaining:
6-Princeton, 1-Quinnipiac, @4-Colgate, @2-Cornell, 3-Harvard, 12-Dartmouth,

6-Princeton… 23 points in 16 games, with remaining:
@5-Saint Lawrence, @7-Clarkson, 10-Brown,10- Yale, @8-RPI, @8-Union,

7-Clarkson… 21 points in 16 games, with remaining:
1-Quinnipiac, 6-Princeton, @2-Cornell, @4-Colgate, 12-Dartmouth, 3-Harvard.

Shabby, ‘yes’ on Lynah on Friday and the Class Arena on Saturday.

Sadly, I live 45 minutes from Cornell and 90 minutes from Colgate. This year, when Colgate was off, I went to three men’s games at Lynah and two women’s games. My record, which happens to also be Cornell’s opposition’s record, is 0-3 for the men (Guelph, Sacred Heart and American International) and 2-0 with the women (#1 Ohio State x2). It’s all good.

As someone who watches the Bigger Red every weekend, live and in person.....dirty goals happen for everyone....Saturday was art: Highlights: Men's Ice Hockey vs Union - 2/4/23 - YouTube Good luck Raiders

BigRedBeer: Looked like a very different Red team, hope we can stay with you this weekend. The Union goalie couldn't stop a basketball.

I do not believe in home ice advantage. Better teams win on the road and if they do, the home school deserves it. Colgate will never be an intimidating place to play for visitors.

As is often the case, Colgate determines its own destiny. And if history is any indicator, it’s not always great. Memorable wins against Q & H, but 13 wins out of 28 games is just about status quo.

One interesting thing I have noticed this year is that Colgate has really played to its level of competition all year. We seem to play bad against the bad teams and good against the good teams. Hopefully this holds and we can get at least one win this weekend.

StillMTNet,
I don’t disagree with your assessment.
So, I looked at Colgate against our ECAC rivals, divided up by my “Top 3, Middle 4, Bottom 5” alignment.

2-2 vs. Top 3 (all in PWR Top 15 today),
3-1 vs. Middle 4 (of which we are one), and
5-3 vs. Bottom 5.

When I look at it that way, ‘Dang! About what are we complaining? Maybe Shabby the Optimist is right?! Breaking even against the best in the conference (and the nation). Dominating our peers. And, okay, just a winning record against the bottom-feeders.’

So I guess your assessment is spot-on. he he he

Iowa, I don't come on here to be miserable, this is supposed to be fun, isn't it ? If I was going to just put negative thoughts here I wouldn't post at all. Like our naysayers, they just make things worse, I won't do it !

I agree with empty net, it's uncanny how we play well against the top teams and lousy against the bad teams. I feel exactly, maybe even less so, in my confidence against Cornell this weekend than I did last year. Look what happened, we swept them and ended their season in the playoffs, four out of five wins.

I have been doing this thread for twenty four years, and believe it or not, parents of hopeful recruits do read this thread, I've talked to many and I was very surprised to find that out. Talking about firing Vaughan, our record in last ten years, attendance, could hurt recruiting. That's why I look for anything positive to post, I am definitely part of the half full thinking.

You subconsciously decide what kind of day you're going to have as soon as you get up in the am, think about it !

Well-said, Shabby. Now my turn…

You gonna be at dingy Lynah or the arena with ‘Class’ in its name this weekend?

Any other regular posters on this thread going to either game?

I am having dinner tomorrow at Antlers in Ithaca with two who bleed Big Red blood, then going to the game with a friend from the International Motor Racing Research Center (in Watkins Glen).

On Saturday, I will have dinner with another motorsports historian friend and his wife (maybe at the Hotel Solsville) and then join them at the game in Hamilton.

Rivalry Weekend is here between PWR#12 Cornell and PWR#36 Colgate.

Carter Gylander led Colgate onto the ice for tonight’s pre-game warm-up at Lynah Rink in Ithaca.
Ian Shane did the same for Cornell.

Colgate penalty. Killed.
Cornell penalty.
A second Cornell penalty.
Colgate score by Ethan Manderville from Matt Verboon and Nick Anderson.
Colgate penalty. Killed.
Colgate penalty. Killed.

Cornell 7, Colgate 5, SOG after one.
Colgate 1, Cornell 0, score after one.

Cornell is just a very physical team. But, so far, so good. And Arnaud Vachon is back (in the box). Hopefully he’ll get his scoring back, too.

Colgate defensive blunder within first minute results in Cornell goal.

Carter Gylander did not get back around in time resulting in a Cornell wrap-around goal.

Carter not happy with himself with the third Cornell goal, just beating him cleanly.

Cornell penalty. Killed.

Cornell 21, Colgate 10, SOG after two.
Cornell 3, Colgate 1, score after two.

9 minutes left.
Cornell penalty.
Colgate goal by Matt Verboon from Nick Anderson and Alex Young.

Cornell 29, Colgate 13, final SOG.
Cornell 3, Colgate 2, final score.
