Colgate 2016-17 A New Beginning

Re: Colgate 2016-17 A New Beginning

Looked like a completely different team today. They didnt give up but I couldnt believe that was the same team from Friday. 2-5-4, looks worse than it is but still stings

For the first 50 minutes of the game, we were putting up a clunker of a performance. Then DV decided to roll the dice, pulling the goalie. It worked. TWICE. Both of our goals were PP + Extra Attacker. This team didn't quit, but the game was ugly for us at times. Only ONE shot on goal in the first period? I know we're a young team that's still growing but that's unacceptable.

Re: Colgate 2016-17 A New Beginning

It was 4-0 when I had to leave it. GateRadio called it a "stinker" of a performance by 'Gate. I'm surprised we made a comeback to end with a respectable score. One SOG in the 1st period is weird.

BTW - Off topic, (sort of): If you haven't seen the women play, do yourself a favor. Looked in at the 'Gate-Brown game at '65 Arena after fb and what a great team. Fun to watch and lots of talent. No wonder they are ranked #5. So young; they will be strong for quite a while.

Re: Colgate 2016-17 A New Beginning

the women could've beaten the men today...total reversal...beating Yale (and yes, we beat them but 4-1 was not indicative of the play) was great, but there is really NO excuse for a team that has played 11 games to not show up for 50+ minutes...1-2-1 after four road games isn't bad, but today was pretty bad...you're going to lose in this league even when you play well; we lost this afternoon because we were really awful...

Re: Colgate 2016-17 A New Beginning

Not sure Yale is what it was hyped up to be; perhaps Brown will prove to be better than the Bulldogs this season. Mixed results with special teams today; 2 ppg for and 3 against, ouch.

Wednesday blues....

Thought I'd bump before we fall to page 3.

Well we have Princeton and Qpac this weekend. I think we need to just keep getting points each weekend. Optimally we have a solid win Friday night and if we lose Saturday that is fine as long as we keep it competitive and don't get blown away.

Of note: Last year we finished 6-14-2 remember in 10th with 14 points. Cornell was 8th with 22 pts. On avg that shows you would need to get a point a game or two pts for a weekend series if you wanted a top 8 finish.

Re: Colgate 2016-17 A New Beginning

Hoping for 3 points this weekend. I know QU is ranked high but if you look at the Maine results (between 'gate and QU) they are pretty similar. Obviously you cant just use those results, but I am going in with high hopes

Re: Colgate 2016-17 A New Beginning

Reminder that the QU game is at 4 PM on Saturday. If you are in the area the Georgetown-QU football/hockey doubleheader is a possibility, although a wet snow is predicted.

Re: Colgate 2016-17 A New Beginning

Good analysis, but a "coaching edge"?? There is no coaching edge. DV is one of the most successful and honored hockey coaches in Div. I. This is an unnecessary comment.

I respect Vaughan as a coach but he's an under .500 coach for his career going up against a coach with a .616 career winning percentage with two frozen four trips in the last 4 season and is the reigning Spencer Penrose Award winner.

Throw out the 2010-11 and 2015-16 seasons, and Vaughan has a more respectable record. Last season was a bit of an aberration in that we had almost no roster depth whatsoever, plus Finn was playing through an injury. The 2010-11 season was also a bit of an anomaly, where we didn't have injuries to key players or a lack of depth, but rather we were just plain snakebit, losing by 1 goal almost every game up until February where everything started going our way, making it to the conference semis despite a last-place finish.

I expect this season to be better for us, but we are a young team and we're still going through some growing pains. A finish in the bottom half of the league standings is not outside the realm of possibility. If you're driving out to Hamilton this weekend, enjoy our new rink!

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" as they say. It's purely speculative and a subjective judgment as to who is a better coach. Yes, if you look at won-loss records perhaps your coach could be judged as "better." However recruiting top notch hockey talent with an AI that fits the Colgate mold - ranked #18 among liberal arts colleges - is a bit more difficult than what QU deals with IMHO. Not trying to trash talk, it's just a fact. Look at the pool of junior players QU recruits, then compare to 'Gate's. 'Nuf said.

Hope you enjoy seeing the new Class of '65 Arena & Riggs Rink if you are able to travel up to Hamilton.

HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Charlie Finn on his career high 47 save performance last night!!!!!!!!!!!! We stayed out of the box and won a lot of face-offs. Great effort!!!!! Looking forward to today's game. GO 'GATE!!!!!!

Re: Colgate 2016-17 A New Beginning

Finn stole this game...and Colton Finney, usually quite good, was a little off...and congrats to Andrew Black, who has battled concussions for quite a while, netting the game winner...but let's be honest folks...Princeton was quite dominant in the final two periods (42 shots) and we were simply awful in our defensive zone...this isn't one of the faster teams in recent memory and the two-man forecheck worked against us...parsing some of the above? DV is a great guy, a good coach, but I wouldn't call him one of the most successful coaches in DI IF you go by his won-lost record...that isn't to say he hasn't been a real asset to The Gate...HE HAS...but the program has operated with only 16 full grant-in-aides since going to athletic scholarships (we hit 17 this year) so I would say that along with an AI akin to the Ivies he's done about as well as expected...I hope the new barn is a recruiting tool, but I'd also like to see a more wide-ranging recruiting effort (especially in the USHL) to give us good recruits coming in every year, not every two or three years...next year looks pretty good on paper, so let's wish for quality DI talent arriving at Hamilton every year...

Re: Colgate 2016-17 A New Beginning

Funny, no "Happy Talkers" after this new edition of "embarrassing hockey moments" at my alma mater...I really feel for Charlie Finn and, perhaps, one or two other players on this team...very little team speed, very little skill, some effort...it's a sad potion of pathetic hockey that I pray will improve as we move into 2017-18 and beyond...say what you will about Pecknold (and I know he's not a popular guy in the ECAC), he recruits ALL OVER North America for talent, he sets high standards for his players, and he is committed to bringing a national championship to Hamden, CT. Can we really say that about our program? I have my doubts...a new rink isn't some magic potion that will automatically elevate this program to elite status...hard work and a commitment from everyone MAY do it...I didn't expect much this year and if you look at our W-L record it really isn't awful...beyond that however I see real challenges and I remain unconvinced that there is a real effort to shoot for anything beyond acceptable mediocrity...right now we are, at best, a middle-of-the-pack Atlantic Hockey team...no better/no worse...I think we will get better, but, let's be honest, the last three games put that sentiment in real jeopardy.

Re: Colgate 2016-17 A New Beginning

Tonite was a tale of two programs at opposite ends of the spectrum. QU is loaded and does not seem to have lost a step from their usual high tempo-slick passing-great speed game. 'Gate is in rebuilding mode and the gap between teams showed. Our guys did their best and hung in there, but there is no substitute for game experience and working as a team for a few years. Considering the skill and moxie of QU, I thought we did pretty well. Gotta stay out of the box and work on breakouts, but this was a real good experience for the team, and should be a learning experience that will help us the rest of the season. They doubled out SOG which is gonna kill you every time.

Re: Colgate 2016-17 A New Beginning

I thought we played well in two zones tonight. We just had too many turnovers right in front of Finn. When we were in the offensive zone it was pretty good, but their forecheck was unreal. I know people are hating on that performance but I dont think it was too bad. However, I do think that first QU goal in the third, which while i was watching the game surprised me, got Finn off his game. Just win in Providence.
