Colgate 2016-17 A New Beginning

Re: Colgate 2016-17 A New Beginning

However, recruiting top-notch hockey talent with an AI that fits the Colgate mold - ranked #18 among liberal arts colleges...

Actually, we're #12 this year...pretty impressive.

The anomaly is that Colgate is a misfit. The Ivies have their own brand, D-III schools with revered D-I hockey programs have their own brand (Clarkson, RPI, St. Lawrence, Union), and then there's Colgate and Qpac (almost 8,000 undergrads alone, accepts 70% of its applicants), which are arguably more dissimilar than they are similar. I would guess that hockey reigns supreme at Qpac; they belong to the MAAC in most sports but play more notable schools through the ECAC. Pecknold has built a dynasty there and their women's team is not far behind.

Congrats Jon. QU is a top-notch team and showed it last night. Good luck going forward. Maybe we see you in the playoffs? :)

Depth concerns me about Quinnipiac. Not a ton of high end talent either but Rand gets the most of his talent and puts the players in the right position to succeed. Good luck the rest of the way too except for the rematch in Hamden.

Not crying over sour grapes and our loss, but don't know why I would care to read a Qpac-leaning blog recap on our own thread when I can read one from Colgate.

Re: Colgate 2016-17 A New Beginning

TchrBill..don't have too much of a problem here...take the Colgate blog, add the Q-Pac blog, divide by two, and you'll get a pretty good analysis of the game...bottom line: it wasn't good...

For the same reason why conservatives should watch CNN and liberals should watch Fox. The truth is likely somewhere in the middle!

Well we are at Providence tomorrow who is not the same team they have been the last few years but are still a solid HE opponent. We will surely lose if our D does not get it together. Finn can't be seeing 40+ shots a game and expect to win games.

That being said it is the Cornell game Tuesday that I am most concerned with. That is a must win for Colgate at home. I thought the OT loss last year was the back breaker for the team and think a win on Tuesday could do wonders for getting this team a first round playoff series at home down the road. It should be an interesting next few days and I hope we can find a win somewhere and play some better hockey.

Re: Colgate 2016-17 A New Beginning

Disappointing result, but they really could have gotten a tie. With about 27 seconds left there was a open top shelf but the goalie made an incredible save. The next three games are huge, gotta be 6-7-4 by the exam break

Re: Colgate 2016-17 A New Beginning

Big Red coming to town tomorrow!! Students are back, should be a good crowd for a Tuesday. Who's coming? Go 'Gate!

Re: Colgate 2016-17 A New Beginning

I was at Saturday's game, and it was my first time seeing Colton Point in action. My first thought of him - he's HUGE, much taller than Charlie Finn. He's definitely our goalie of the future, which explains why he got the start even though Finn has been playing well this year. And I thought he played well despite the loss - the game-winning goal came in the 3rd period with the player skating in alone on him, firing a laser of a shot into the back of the net. Don't remember if it was a breakaway or a neutral-zone turnover (ugh). That said, we had an opportunity to tie the game in the final minute of regulation, but their goalie made a point-blank save when the player that shot the puck was looking at a wide open net.

The team is 0-3-2 when I'm at the game in person this year, maybe I'll have to watch the rest of the season from afar. Beat Cornell!

Not making the trip; hoping to stream it. Should be a good crowd with the Teddy Bear Toss..

Re: Colgate 2016-17 A New Beginning

I think point started on Saturday because of the big game on Tuesday and then the week of travel out to ASU. I would bet Finn starts tuesday

Re: Colgate 2016-17 A New Beginning

Hi everyone, hope no one gets logged off USCHO as I did, it took two weeks and about six emails to USCHO ! Looking forward to tonight's game, there are just a few seats left, I just checked, so the seats will be gone. What's nice is standing room only tix will be sold when that happens. Should break the attendance record for the new rink tonight.

I think Finn starts tonight and Point gets one of the two games this weekend. CYA there.

Sorry to hear you got logged off Shabby. How does that happen? I've never experienced it.

Does anyone know how much standing room tickets cost? Tix for seats have gone up to $12.00 this year - guess they need the $$ for all the luxuries of the new arena. Will they only sell standing room when the permanent seats are sold out? Not that I'm making it to the game tonite, but just wondered for future reference. Standing room is the best seat in the house IMO.

SRO tickets are $10 according to the CU ticket site. Maybe I should start buying those tix as I've bought the $12 seats so far and not bothered sitting down!

No Defense
No Speed
Bad Penalties
Sloppy stick handling
No pure goal scorers

This was a huge loss at home as we just can't seem to beat Cornell or any good teams anymore going back about 2.5 years now. A top 8 finish is slipping away quickly as I am hard pressed to believe Yale will not get better.

Re: Colgate 2016-17 A New Beginning

Another tough loss. It seems like they are so close. I am also not trying to be overly optomistic. The last ten minutes of the game when they were pressing they were impressive. Problem was they got themselves down two goals. Finn played well again. I really could see this team making a playoff (or earlier push). They just have to put it all together in 60 min stretches not just 15-20.

I guess I should have expected it from Cornell, but way to keep it classy doing a stick tap on away ice right in front of the home team doing the same.

Re: Colgate 2016-17 A New Beginning

the above comments pretty well sum up our year-to-date performance and the ongoing shortcomings of the program. In fact, other than the good year of 2013-14 this program has very, very few high quality wins over the years. The Dauda line looks good at times, but that's about it up front. Lack of team speed appears to be an issue as well, as teams continuously keep up bottled up in our own end for much of the game. Finn had simply no chance on all three goals. (The lack of defensive effort - and I won't name names - on Cornell's third goal was especially frustrating). We all knew this year was going to be tough (I predicted 10-24-2 before the season started) and that's OK as long as the team progresses throughout the year. I am waiting for this progress AND progress in the future. After all, we've waged $38 million on it...
