Colgate 2011-12

Re: Colgate 2011-12

With tonight's victory over Vermont, we have now earned at least 1 victory against each collegiate hockey conference. Also, we go 5-2 for the month of November.

Took advantage of the free video (along with an HDMI cable/adapter I bought today on Black Friday) to view the game on my flat-screen TV. It was worth it. Looked a bit sloppy in the 1st but we made up for it in the 2nd and 3rd periods. Our two 2nd period goals were well-timed. A shorty by Chris Wagner less than 2 min. into the period, then the eventual game-winner by Joe Wilson with <1 min to go before the intermission. These are the kind of goals that can be back-breakers when you yield them. In 14 games now we have 5, yes FIVE shorthanded goals. In the 3rd period it was the Matt Firman show, scoring twice to give us an insurance goal then seal the victory. Firman's 2nd goal (to make it 4-1) was with <2 min to go in the 3rd, with UVM's goalie still between the pipes. Basically, this was your step-on-the-throat-of-the-enemy type of goal putting the nail in the coffin. Good teams do that to other teams when they have them on the ropes.

Also have to give credit to Alex Evin for another solid performance in goal. He made 32 saves and has a GAA of under 2 for the season. Looks like we might have some competition in the crease this year.

Re: Colgate 2011-12

Evin leads the country in Save % .951 and third in GAA 1.38 . Great game last night.

Another great game by Evin.Congratulations to the team on playing as a team and working hard. Just wondering about the new arena... Any thoughts as to design features that will help draw fans? I like the Clarkson idea of combining student facilities with the arena. They have function rooms for bands and restaurants in the arena building. Students are going there for recreation so why not a hockey game on the night out? Also, anything like the alumni/boosters rooms you find at most new arenas (BU) or remodels (Yale). Don't need anything fancy but while asking alums and boosters to pony up for the facility, why not create a special part of the facility to recognize their contributions? I know Yale serves adult beverages in their alum room.

Clarkson actually opened a new student center last year which means the students don't go to Cheel for recreation beyond hockey and free skate much anymore, at least according to my sister. Even the mailroom moved.

Re: Colgate 2011-12

With Miami beating Providence (and DU besting Princeton) they now face Denver. This should be good news for us in the PWR, as we are tied for 13th with DU. If Miami wins, wouldn't that provide a good boost for us?

Re: Colgate 2011-12

The ECAC is doing itself proud this weekend. Cornell got hosed last night, should have won. Union is up on Michigan 4-0 right now in the 2nd. Yale let BC slip out with a 3-2 win in the last minute.

Re: Colgate 2011-12

We're now ranked #10 in INCH's power rankings. Interesting note, team is 17-8 in our last twenty five games.

David McIntyre was called up and will be playing his first NHL game tonight for Minnesota. It's against Tampa and is on VERSES tonight at 7:30.

Re: Colgate 2011-12

Geez, it's great to see Cornell/Yale in the rear view mirror in some of the polls/rankings. It may not last, but it sure is good to be sittin' where we are right now.

Was DV (or the AD) clairvoyant in making up this year's schedule? After this weekend with Clarkson/SLU we face #1 Merrimack then Ferris State - who is also up there - for 2 on the road in Jan. If we go "3 and oh" against those two, wouldn't we be ranked around #3 in the country?

Re: Colgate 2011-12

Noticed Miami has played 14 TUCs to Colgate's 5 and is now ahead in the PWR. Every game will make a difference this season and sooooo want to be IN the bubble. IMO women's hockey needs to put it in gear and get a winning season.

Go 'Gate
Beat Clarkson

SOS in the KRACH rankings - Miami (Ohio) 7, Colgate 42. Colgate's SOS will rise with Merrimack and Ferris State coming up but the struggles of Army (1-6-5), Niagara (3-5-4) and Robert Morris (5-6-1) aren't helping.

Re: Colgate 2011-12

17 shifts and over 11 min. played by David Mac in last night's Wild SO win over Edmonton. The Wild have gone wild, now leading the NHL in points. Let's hope Mac is the good luck charm this young team needed to continue their winning ways.

Re: Colgate 2011-12

We've done very well against Clarkson lately but, winless in last eight against SLU !! Need to change that. Larries have turned things around in the conference games. Two important games this weekend, but they all are. Goaltending split again ?

The good news is that Evin is 3rd in the nation with a 1.38 GAA, but in only 5 games. On the other hand Paul Karpowich of Clarkson is 6th ranked with a 1.79 avg and 4 shutouts in 16 games. It will be a tough game no matter who's in net with the Golden Knights 4th in team D with 1.88 goals per game.We are right up there in tenth place with 2.29/game.

It helps to have the SHG leader and one of the top goal scorers in Austin Smith, but he's carrying a big load. Gotta solve Karp on Friday; Clarkson is mentioned in most all statistical categories while SLU is not. But that doesn't necessarily mean anything...

Statistics can be twisted.

"Statistically" Clarkson has great numbers but "Statistically" against weak competition.

#58 Krach Oct 14 vs. Sacred Heart W, 3-0
#58 Krach Oct 15 vs. Sacred Heart W, 5-2
#56 Krach Oct 21 vs. American Int'l W, 5-2
#56 Krach Oct 22 vs. American Int'l W, 5-0
#52 Krach Oct 28 at Bentley W, 3-2
#52 Krach Oct 29 at Bentley T, 2-2
#54 Krach Nov 4 vs. RPI W, 4-1
#51 Krach Nov 27 at Holy Cross W, 5-0

Average Krach ranking 54.624 only 58 spots.

Note the save percentage in these games.

Nov 5 vs. Union L, 3-1 .880
Nov 11 at Quinnipiac T, 1-1 .977
Nov 12 at Princeton L, 3-0 .933
Nov 18 vs. Harvard L, 3-2 .889
Nov 19 vs. Dartmouth W, 4-0 1.000
Nov 26 at Maine L, 4-3 .892

1-4-1 last 6 games. The 1 win against (Krach #40) Dartmouth at home on the 2nd of night of a north country trip which is always extremely tough.

Too bad; was going to look for you tonite Shabby. Get well soon!

Regarding Gaterrooter's analysis, I see your points and they are well taken. But there are no easy games among the 58 schools playing Div I hockey, as witness Sacred Heart's beating of Yale last week. I would be surprised if Clarkson didn't come into Starr with something to prove tonight. They'll want a split this weekend (at least) and know they face Cornell tomorrow :)
