Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Looking at the schedule after next weekend no home games for two months ! Maybe we can get a crowd...will the stoogents still be here ?

Yeah, they'll still be around as the university *insists* that classes be held the Mon. and Tues. before Thanksgiving. (the only schools that I know of that give students the whole week off are West Virginia and UConn)

Anyone know anything about Larkin's cond ? Big blow if we lose him !

Still no news. The game notes are up for this weekend at gocolgateraiders.com, and all it says about him is that he was ECAC Rookie of the Week. I've still got an unpleasant feeling about his condition though.

Anyone making the trip to New England this weekend? I will definitely be at the Brown game on Friday (I live only 20 min. from Providence), and maybe at the Yale game depending on travel and ticket situations. Brown will be no pushover, we went 0-1-1 against them last year and haven't beaten them on the road since 2005. I'm not too concerned about Yale, as we went 1-1 against them last year, but we can't overlook either team.

P.S. the Brown game is on Friday the 13th (Colgate Day). Wear your Colgate attire! We lost the last Colgate Day game (3-2 @ Harvard last Feb.), but I've got a better feeling about this year.

Rainman: NOT TOO CONCERNED ABOUT YALE? They are the preseason pick to win the league, and you're not worried? It's payback time for last year's debacle - perhaps the worst loss in recent 'Gate hockey history. It was that come-from-behind win that turned their season around and helped make them eventual champions!

Brown will be tough. I'd be happy with three points coming out of this w/e.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Also...Smith is on pace for the 25 goals I forecast for him earlier, still don't think he gets enough press.

While I agree in theory, I also think Smith is a great player as well. However, he is a sophomore whom has been fortunate to play in his freshman year with some skilled players. When he wasn't with Mac last year, his point production deminished substantially after x-mas up until the Quinny series..

When they switced him back a few weeks ago to the top line, his production went back up, as he is a very good finisher around the net. Smith also see's the ice well, and that will make the top line produce more frequently.

I my humble opinion, underclassmen don't usually get the same press as the upperclassmen. If Smith can produce well without the contribution of his current line-mates, then he will become a strong leader in his upperclassmen years.

Rainman: NOT TOO CONCERNED ABOUT YALE?

Well of course I'm concerned about Yale, what I meant to say was I'm MORE concerned about Brown. Why? Because we haven't beaten them on the road in 4 years. But the Bulldogs (IMO) are still the team to beat, and after that 5-4 OT loss I had nightmares about it for about 2 weeks. Plus, I couldn't even watch or think about hockey (including NHL) for that time period as well.

What I was really trying to say was that we gotta take it 1 game at a time. We can't overlook the Bears while thinking about trying to steal 2 pts from the Bulldogs. Should be a fun weekend.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Great news...Larkin's injury is not as bad as thought. He is questionable for this weekend. Price is banged up also...if they both can't go it will be a real struggle.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Good to hear that our drafted frosh D-men are not seriously injured in the same manner that Poplawski was last year. But at least 1 of them will need to play in each game this weekend, or else we'll only be dressing 5 D-men. Hopefully Leidl is okay, as he did not play in either of the 2 games last weekend.

I will be at both games this weekend (I bought a ticket for the Yale game last week through the Colgate ticket office -- got it in the mail today :D ). Will post a review of the Brown game Friday night, and a review of the Yale game sometime Sunday or Monday.

Go 'Gate! Beat Brown and Yale!

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Looks like the complaints re lack of press coverage got heard! Headed to the game this evening so I will be able to confirm or deny rainman's impressions

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

WHEW!!!! Good win for the Raiders...nice that Corbin get his first collegiate goal. Also nice to hear we were setting up some screens that resulted in goals!!!!! Congrats, guys. Go 'Gate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Nice win tonight. A lot of firepower. A shame to lose the shutout and then stagger a bit in the 3rd before righting the ship but the key is we did and we won. On another subject, I was looking at the Middlebury roster a minute ago and found Jak Knelman listed as a soph forward from Holy Angles in Edina Minn. Small world. Glad he's back in college hockey probably better suited for Div 3 than Div 1. :)

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Just got back from Meehan Auditorium. In my opinion, this was a wild game that wasn't over until the clock hit 0:00. I was lucky enough to snag a seat right behind the Colgate bench with a decent view of the ice (and it only cost $5 to get into the game!).

First the bad news: Larkin did not play tonight. Price, Sinz, and Leidl all dressed tonight though, as well as Bessette. Thankfully not having Larkin available tonight didn't result in any immediate disaster. We did look sloppy once the puck dropped, but started to get our act together on our 1st power play. I unfortunately missed the 1st goal as I had dropped something on the floor, and as I went to pick it up, I heard a roar of sorts and noticed the goal light at the far end was turned on. Thankfully, we scored to make it 2-0 not long after (and I clearly saw this score). AND it was a power play goal! Even though we've had trouble with the extra man, we've now gone 3 straight games having scored AT LEAST ONE power play goal.

The 2nd period was also a slow start for the Raiders, as Brown was looking aggressive, trying desperately to light the lamp. Thankfully Long was able to make some key saves, and this lead to the Raider offense doing whatever they could to increase their lead, though Brown's goalie (Clemente) made some great stops.

The 3rd period, however, was one that I will remember. We scored 3 times in the first 5 minutes to make it 5-0, only to let Brown score 3 goals in the next 5 minutes (including a PPG) to make a game of it. Immediately, I thought this was going to be another "Yale fiasco". I almost left the game early once it became 5-3, then just sat down doing everything I could not to look at the clock. Thankfully the timeout by Coach Vaughan and some Brown penalties were able to get us back on our feet and secure the 2 pts on the road.

Still: we NEED to play a full 60 minutes. Tonight was a full "55" minutes, thankfully the offense bailed us out of a dreadful loss or tie. Long looked okay in net except for the 3-goal burst by Brown. He wasn't really tested in the 1st two periods, but he'll need to be on his game tomorrow against the Bulldogs. Yale defeated Cornell in their home opener, and will be no slouch tomorrow, as they seem to have gotten their act together.

Our offense has scored 3 goals or more in EACH of our last six games!!!!! (And we've scored 4 goals or more in four of our last five!) We just need defense and goaltending to keep improving. Like I just said, Long was a bit shaky tonight, though keep in mind he wasn't really tested early on in the game, and it came back to bite him somewhat. But he'll probably get the start again tomorrow, as he's played at Ingalls before and it would not be wise to "change horses" in the middle of such momentum.

I should also note that there was a decent Colgate crowd at tonight's game, and all of them were cheering loudly after all 5 of Colgate's goals. Congrats to McPherson on his 1st career goal too, I believe it was also the eventual game-winner. I'll be making the trip to New Haven tomorrow, and will post a review of that game some time Sunday morning. Go 'Gate!

P.S. I thought I saw Emma Watson at tonight's game

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Thank you, Ivies, for your scheduling limitations. :D

Nice front-page article on Colgate and D. Mac. Sad stat near the end re: our anemic PP -- near the bottom of all D-I. Come on, guys. Let's work on that!

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

The PP numbers are disconcerting, but it's nice to watch a team that can score goals consistently. They took care of business tonight, and I'll take the 2 points

Interesting test for the boys tomorrow night. Losing a road game against the defending League champs would hardly be a cause for concern at this point, but that's no reason not to go all-out for the W

3 for 3 in ECAC play :)

Clemente was (is?) one of the only bright lights for Brown last year. It's good to see we scored 5 goals on him.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

If there is such a thing, hell of a tie! We got out fast but Yale kept coming like a freight train and we held our ground. Another great game by Long. 3 great goals, including a PPG on our only chance...A 3 point weekend not bad for being in enemy territory.:)

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Are you kidding me ?? If we were offered three points I would of taken them in a heartbeat. We couldn't hang on to a 3-1 lead but a great weekend. We are now solidly positioned for a good November, fast start, first in ages. You gotta love it !!

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

My review from Ingalls rink:

I arrived just before the puck dropped, and was able to claim a seat on the visitor's side just to the left of the Colgate bench. From the start, I knew this game was going to be a completely different one from the Brown game. The crowd was larger and more "into it" than the crowd that was in Providence, and the Yale players had more speed and energy than the Brown players. But thankfully we were able to get on top 1-0 thanks to a Brian Day power-play goal. That's SIX games in a row with at least ONE power-play goal. Though we haven't scored more than one in a single game yet, the PP is slowly but surely improving. Then we made it 2-0 with a Jason Williams shorthanded goal. I wasn't seeing that coming, but that's 2 goals for Williams in as many nights, good for him. Yale still seemed to dominate the period, but we were keeping them in check on defense and took advantage of our offensive opportunities to keep it 2-0 going into the break.

The 2nd period was highlighted by Yale coming out of the gate trying to erase our lead. And it wasn't long until they lit the lamp on a power play goal. But at least we didn't slide right after that, as Bourdon was able to make it 3-1 to regain the two-goal lead. But it wasn't long-lived when Backman made it 3-2 for Yale on a mini-breakaway where he deked Long.

The 3rd period was almost exactly the same as the 2nd, with Yale appearing to have more speed and energy than us, as they desperately tried to get the equalizer. We were holding serve very well, though Dignard was able to get a shot through traffic to make it 3-3. Surprisingly, we did not call a timeout after the goal, though we were able to still keep the Yale offense in check, especially in the waning minutes and overtime. Overtime was another nail-biter, as Yale had most of the chances to win it, even though the boxscore says they only had 2 shots on net in the extra session. Colgate had a golden opportunity with about a minute left in the OT, though Yale's goalie closed the door shut on us, and thus we escaped New Haven with a 3-3 draw. I'll take 3 pts out of 4 on the road, even though we were unable to maintain a lead we had for a majority of the game.

We've now gone SEVEN games in a row having scored 3 goals or more, and we've scored 3 goals or more in NINE of our eleven total games. I don't remember this happening in recent history for the team. Defense seemed to improve based on last night's performance, though Larkin did not play again. I believe I did see him a few rows behind me talking to some of the Colgate supporters in attendance, so my guess is that his injury is just minor, and by sitting out a couple games he's avoiding risk of something more serious.

Long looked better in net compared to Friday night. Though he was tagged for 3 goals last night, he did stop 41 of 44 shots -- a career high. He also did a great job keeping the Yale offense off the scoreboard in the waning minutes of the 3rd period as well as overtime. I'm sure he'll keep improving, as well as the defense. Other than that, this seems like the best start to league play the team has had since at least the 2005-06 season, maybe earlier!

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I'm with Oldtimer and Shabby. 3 points on a conference road weekend? Yes please :)

Big weekend coming up, Princeton is still good and Quinnipiac has been one of the early surprises in the League (along with, ahem, the mighty Raiders :D)

Mildly disappointed at blowing the lead, but keeping the tie in OT is good. That'll go on the list of things to improve upon in the 2nd half. Feeling real good about this team right now

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I'm with you guys: I'll take the 3 pts on the road. Great way to start the league campaign.

Nice to see us get a SHG and PPG. The offense is on a roll, and if we can just keep up the production it takes some of the weight off the frosh on defense.

Quinny and P'ton won't be easy, and there's no room for a letdown. I hope these are not trap games for the team. It would be nice to knock off all these Ivy foes early in the season while they're getting their sea legs.

Looking forward to Yale's coming to Starr later on....;)

Good to see Jason Williams get up to 4 goals already. The "Production Line" is doing a super job...:) Keep it up boys!
