Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Looking at the boxscore this morning ... attendance was 583 for last night? I guess students were more interested in seeing a former prime minister speak and doing Halloween stuff than watch a hockey game.

Surprised the attendance was that low. Gate Radio said over 200 folks came down from the Utica area to see one of the Niagara players, so that doesn't sound like many locals/students showed up...:(

Maybe it's good we catch Harvard and Dartmouth at the beginning of their seasons, with some games under our belt. I'm sure they will both be right near the top by the end of the campaign. The Crimson have a couple of high draft choices of the Canadians, so it should be a really good test. Nice to see us finish strong last night - something we haven't been able to do lately..including last year.

Good interview of Winch, GR!

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Army's Andy Starczewski, from Whitesboro up around Oneida, had 213 tickets or so for Friday night. Saturday's crowd was sparse at best. The "student section" where the band was looked like it was packed together with kids but the Raider Nation crowd and the end zone seats were pretty thin with people. Chairback section looked like it normally does, around 2/3 full.

Hopefully between the opening conference weekend, not a lot going on with other home sports this weekend and Silver Puck will mean a decent crowd as we wrap up this current five-game home stand with Harvard and Dartmouth.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Whitesboro's a suburb of Utica where Rob Esche and Mark Mowers played.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Just looked at Harvard's roster. They dressed 7 freshmen and 6 sophomores Friday night at Dartmouth, and all 5 goals were scored by either a frosh or soph in their 5-3 win. So you think we're young? Harvard's just as young. Counting the exhibitions, we've played 9 games, Harvard's played 2. We've had enough warm-ups. We'll be at home Friday night. No excuses. Go out and win the game.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Agreed, Magoo..:D

We should be able to pull this off: Silver Puck W/E, home games, catching Harvard/Big Green early in their seasons.....yeah, it's doable. I'm just worried about the two Montreal draft picks...

Hope the seats are filled for both games.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Hey gang,

Coach Vaughan returns to the Colgate Coaches Show tonight on All-Access and 94 WKXZ. The show will be live on the radio and on the Internet at Colgate's All-Access subscription site. The video from the show should be available on an archive basis if you want to wait and check it out the night before the league opener with Harvard.

Coach Vaughan will be with me from around 7:00 to 7:25 and then we'll have two players on in the second half hour. Put your questions for the Coach here or send them to cap@colgate.edu.

*EDIT, again - I'll be joined tonight by Austin Smith and Alex Evin*

The next two Coach Vaughan shows will be November 17 and December 15.

Also, my interview with Austin Smith as this week's Athlete of the Week is now playing on GoColgateRaiders.com.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Interesting fact:

We play all 6 Ivy teams in November, then we don't play them again until February. The Ivy teams have all played only 1 game (Princeton 2 games, not counting exhibitions), and Harvard and Dartmouth have only played each other. Now is the chance to snag a few W's from them while they're still getting their feet wet. After that, we'll be playing them in the gauntlet, where they will be fighting for playoff position.

Hopefully Harvard will be looking ahead towards stealing a point or two from the Big Red, which will allow us to snag (hopefully) two points from them. And Dartmouth could very well be 0-2 going into their game against us Saturday -- we can't overlook them. Here's to a (finally) successful Silver Puck weekend.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Two very young teams battling Friday night, should be interesting as Magoo said Harvard plays something like 14 frosh and sophs. LeBlanc is very highly touted Montreal Canadian property I believe.

1st round - 18th overall pick by the Canadiens. Not too shabby (pardon the pun):D

Geez - 5 hours to face-off --doesn't seem to be too much excitement. Is it possible to get over 2000 people in the building tonight? These 3-figure attendance numbers are a little embarassing.

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

FWIW, Jesse Winchester has been sent back to Ottawa from the Binghamton Sens.

Yeah, we need to fill the building tonight and at tomorrow's matinee. I would think Silver Puck weekend would see a better than normal turnout. (Undecided which game to attend.... )

Sullivan has us losing to Harvard and winning vs. Big Green..

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Sullivan has us losing to Harvard and winning vs. Big Green..

We just defeated Harvard 5-4 with four 3rd period goals!!!!! What a comeback! But it wasn't a pretty game, especially with our atrocious 1st period. But do you believe in miracles????? I can see the headline of the recap: Cardiac kids do it again with a 5-4 win over Harvard.

I don't know why Evin was given the start after Long got the win last Sat. vs. Niagara. I'm guessing Coach Vaughan is trying to have Long and Evin split time so that once Long graduates, Evin will have plenty of experience to be the starting goalie. But Evin looked horrible, and thankfully he was pulled after it was 3-0 Harvard. Long definitely played much better, and deserves to start tomorrow afternoon's tilt against the Big Green (who lost 5-1 at Lynah -- they'll be desperate tomorrow).

But what I want to know is this: Why wasn't the pep band at tonight's game? After each goal, I didn't hear any sound of the fight song, just a siren followed by Kernkraft 400 blasting over the PA.

Three of the teams picked to finish in the top 4 this year (Yale, Harvard, Princeton) all lost tonight. Could be a wild year in the ECAC :D

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Great 2nd and 3rd for the win tonight, sort of erases the sting of the Yale loss last year, :) but how could we have come out so flat in the 1st? Somebody has to step in for DV when if comes to rallying the troops before games. I honeslly think his personality is so controlled that it's hard for him to get people into a lather before some of these games which we need. He clearly gets their attention later in the games as he did before the 2nd and 3rd tonight but how can you be laid back coming out against Harvard of all teams and spot them a quick 3 goals? Also time to sit Alec Evin and play Long all the time. Evin is too erratic and until he proves himself coming off the bench, he's earned the dog house. It reminds me of how lucky we were with Silverthorn and Dekanich for all those years. Two goalies who started 98% of the games over 8 years and were good to great 90%+ of the time. All in all, however, a great win for Gate and this young team which found a way to get it done...:)

Great job by the Raiders tonight! The RPI scoreboard had you guys down three nothing, then when I was driving home the postgame report mentioned you guys had won 5-4 . Great comeback ! BTW, RPI did alright tonight too. :D

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Ditto your post Slappahs. I was at Yale-RPI tonight and was watching the out of town scores.

Tremendous comeback!! What a 3rd period it must have been. If there wasn't any noise in Starr Rink tonight then there never will be again.

Don't want to make a habit of falling behind early in games, but it's nice to know that this team has the firepower to come back from 3 goal deficits. And our frosh continue to contribute big time.

As nice as this win is, it won't mean as much if we don't follow it up with a win tomorrow. Dartmouth is off to a slow start - we need to keep them down and jump on them in the 1st period.

Long no doubt will get the start tomorrow. But do we know for sure that Bessette isn't as good as Long and Evin?

I know I was certainly doing my best to get some noise in there (along with those I was sitting with). ;) As the third period kept going, it got a bit louder in there though....guess they were waiting for the team to get it going as well..

That was the best I've seen the team play for a period or two in quite a while. Someone must have said something in the locker room after the first period that really got them fired up. Now, if only they could make a habit of it, and do it for 60 minutes....

Bessette wasn't even dressed for the game today, and according to the box scores of the past couple, wasn't dressed for any of them either....Kinda curious as to what's up there...

He's out with an injury. Long should be in the goal tomorrow, not only for his performance in relief tonight, but also the fact that he allowed just one Dartmouth goal in two games last year and shut them out the last time he saw them.

Crowd tonight got bigger as the game went along (probably rolled in once the women's soccer game ended - BTW another OT win for them) from maybe a couple hundred butts in the seats at face-off to around 2/3 of the building full by the end of the game. Only time in the last 2.5 years I've heard the crowd counting down the time in the game as it rolled down on the scoreboard. It may have happened against SLU in the playoffs a few years ago but I honestly don't remember.

As for the video, I'm not sure what the issue is. I know we just got some new equipment into the office the other day but that may have been up at Van Doren for the Patriot League soccer semifinal games. If your video continues to do poorly, shoot an email to Athletic Communications. Obviously it needs to be fixed and since y'all paid a decent amount for it, the least we can do is make sure that it works. It could have something to do with a changeover in format of how the video is playing from last year to this year.

My video last night didn't even START working until after it was 3-0 Harvard in the 1st. Then it kept freezing every 15 seconds or so, to a point in the 3rd period where the game was about 5 min. behind your radio broadcast. It eventually died when Colgate scored to make it 4-3, causing me to miss the comeback  though I did get to catch the radio feed and hear the whole outcome :)

If the video acts up again today, I will email Athletic Communications with a formal letter of complaint. I've had little to no troubles with football this year, but it's been disastrous for the home hockey games.

P.S. The boxscore says attendance was 1350 last night! That's about a 2/3 full rink.

This poster got it right :D :D :D

It helps to have 6-7 games under your belt when going against Harvard, and despite a sleepwalking first period, we didn't lose our poise. Coach has to install an espresso machine in that locker room; we can't get away with spotting every team a 3-0 lead.

I don't think LeBlanc, their Montreal draft pick, played all that big a part in their game, although I believe he was in the sin bin a couple of time. Cantabs are a young team and it was great to get them at this point in the season. NIce to see Mac get his first, and Austin contribute in a big way.

Big Greeen will be hurting for a win this PM. Hope we have enough energy and enthusiasm left in the tank to take it to 'em early.

GR - nice call of the game last night..:)

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

I wonder why....we always have a terrible first period. Shots favored us 17-4 in the second and I thought we were snakebitten. Then in the third they just outworked Harvard, no pretty goals but I'll take those bluecollar goals all night.

A win today would be large for us...Also beat Lafayette in a must game !!

Re: Colgate 2009-2010

Congrats on the win last night!

You guys got down early and instead of packing it in and getting chippy, you fought back.

A lot of credit all around to your players and coaching staff.

This young Harvard team learned a few things last night.
