CCHA teams will join WCHA

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

Four thumbs down on this move. If they were so worried about stability, they could have just set up an interlocked schedule.

 I see no benifit to the 2013-14 WCHA teams for doing this and we get the added baggage of horrific travel.
 Lost the extra auto-bid for the NCAA tourney
 Screwed over UAH in the process AGAIN
 Not in the best interest of college hockey because there won't be expansion until some programs drop hockey. However it shouldn't take long with the added travel costs of the WCHA. Anyone on the fringe from a budget stand point will be gone within three years.

For all practical purposes, the BigTen is closed to new members because the only schools they will add have to have BigTen football programs. And if you think tNational is going to take on an expansion team, just go back and review the greed that started this whole chain of events and think again. I have to imagine the members of the two new conferences are looking at this move and grinning ear to ear. They got what they wanted, and even got the added benifit of all the leftovers forming one conference so that another team from one of their two conferences can make the NCAA tourney every year.

There isn't a button big enough for the dislike on this move.

Not crazy about this, for most of the reasons previously stated, but what's done is done.

Meanwhile, UAH is left doing their best Axl Rose impression, "Where do we go...where do we go...oh, where do we go now?"

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

I know we have discussed it before (I think?), but where is the conference championship going to be? And how do we draw more than 2,000 fans? When the geographic center of the conference is Lake Michigan, what do you do? Green Bay, Milwaukee, Grand Rapids? Set up a pond-style rink on the lake?

I like the move given the circumstances. Perhaps making the best of a lousy situation, if they do the division idea right. It saves the teams *for now*. Nothing says you can't go to two conferences if teams are interested in starting programs. Honestly, if this summer has proven anything, it really does not take much of anything to start a conference. But really, why stand out there and wait for Godot, if he may never show up?

I feel bad for Alabama-Huntsville. But I am not sure what the solution is there. They are pretty much a flight for most of the new conference. We already fly to Alaska. Unless there is a "we will pay you to come here" type of agreement, it doesn't make sense for anyone to scoop them up. And this is unfortunate.

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

I don't like this move. 10 thumbs down. seems panicky and hasty. The option to merge W/CCHA would have been there at any time for next 2 years so....

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

+100

Assuming this goes through, 13 teams with Moorhead as the possible 14th. If I was Moorhead, I start looking at the travel and say no. This could be the death knell for UAH.

1. SCSU
2. Mankato
3. BSU
4. UAA
5. MTU
6. NMU
7. LSSU
8. BGSU
9. FSU
10. Alaska
11. WMU

Uhhhh.......

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

The Big Ten schools spit on us, declared themselves too improtant to play with the other "lesser state schools," and blasted college hockey's landscape into bits.

Wrong the Big Ten schools didn't not spit on anybody. We all know if they have six Big Ten members playing a sport they always form the Big Ten. They have never not done it EVER.

That was offered to the CCHA and they still turned UAH away. The rest of the college hockey "community" doesn't want UAH around anymore. QED.

Couldn't not you have not used more negatives? Your post goes for naught if not for the word not. But I think you didn't not use one extra "not" in your original statement. That's very naughty.

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

My personal opinion is that this came about because the Atlantic Hockey teams weren't impressed with any guarantees that the CCHA/Atlantic Hockey 6-8 wouldn't become the new CHA, with teams dwindling down to nothing and they would find themselves begging back into Atlantic Hockey in a decade. Added travel and scholarships and no real upside in attendance or league visibility. Would they like to go full scholarship? Sure. But they're probably content to wait and see if a couple schools don't start up new programs out east and shake Hockey East/ECAC up into three leagues where they could slide up instead over the next decade.

Both meetings with the WCHA occurred after the CCHA/Atlantic Hockey 4 meeting, where the schools could have simply gone to the WCHA and said "We can't get anyone else to join. If you take LSSU and UAF like you're planning, you'll kill the rest. Your choice."

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

It is about recruiting non-traditional players and overage Canadians.

You can bet that the Number 1 priority for the new commissioner for The National will be to allow CHL players into the NCAA.

Forget that. I'm still trying to figure out why he thinks SCSU and Mankato will be on the "fringe" of the WCHA.

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

You mean all the Big Ten teams but Minnesota.

Why wouldn't minnesota schedule anyone from the ITMBAGHC? Is it because every team from the ITMBAGHC made the ncaa's last year and minny has missed the tournament the last three years?

Because Minnesota is working on scheduling arrangements with the other Minnesota teams, and there is talk of an all-Minnesota tournament (presumably around Hockey Day Minnesota). They won't have many non-conference games left. And my guess is North Dakota is higher on the list than DU, CC, UNO, or Miami.

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

Personally, I think it would make for a more exciting league, but I can see where everyone is coming from about the autobid. That's definitely a bummer.

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

We still have to see which programs go under after all the changes go fully into effect. I don't see anything that changes my opinion that a few will.
