CCHA teams will join WCHA

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

Apparently emailed to people associated with UB: "The University at Buffalo athletic department has been in conversations with established Division I hockey conferences to examine the possibility of returning our hockey program..."

So, exactly how ****ed will UAH fans be if the CCHA hangs around and invites a school without a program to join the league, but not the Chargers?
Now we're talking about Buffalo - How much stranger can this get? Frankly I think BGSU is grasping at straws to keep the CCHA afloat. This discussion is about six months late to be taken seriously.

Really? And what are the alternatives for BGSU? WCHA is obviously not their preference ... perfectly understandable since the nearest team other than FSU is 500 miles away. Let's see ... three teams in the UP, two in Minnie and two in Alaska. Yeah ... wonderful geography, especially for BG. It would seem to me that if ND goes NCHC, they might get an invite as well (have not heard that, just speculating). Otherwise, putting together something with the AHA4 seems a reasonable approach. Whether Buffalo goes D1 or not, consider other possibilities ...

- perhaps Ferris re-considers the geography challenge and joins as well.
- perhaps RIT, realizing that there are no openings in the ECAC (if ND does not go to HEA) and realizing that they would be a geographic outlier as the only team in WNY left in the AHA, decides to make it the AHA5.

JFR, the University of Minnesota and Ohio State University are in the same conference.

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

Why is it not wonderful geography for BGSU but it is fine for Ohio State?

Yes, money is a huge factor. You also have a trip to Alaska (will the Alaska schools subsidize that travel forever?) and three trips to the UP every year. For a school like BGSU, which came awfully close to dropping hockey a few years ago, lots of travel might be the straw that breaks the camel's back...

Understanding our geographic disadvantages is something common across all enterprises located in Alaska. UAA and UAF agreed to the ticket subsidy in order to secure membership in their respective conference. It's considered part of doing business up here to grease the wheels of weenies that think a 5 hour plane trip from the midwest to Alaska is somehow different from a 5 hour plane ride between Seattle and Houston. So yeah ... I'd bet dollars to donuts that UAA and UAF would continue to subsidize travel ... it's already a justified part of their yearly budget.

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

As long as there is oil under Alaska, yes.

Doesn't Alaska already pay for flying around high school sports teams around the state? It would seem subsidzing the cost of flying up a few college teams a year wouldn't be a big deal.

The issue is will UAA & UAF agree to subsidize flights for every team in the conference including the new ones and at what rate of subsidy is it acceptable to the rest of the WCHA now that the Final Five $ are gone.

Five hours? It took me 17 hours to get to, and 22 hours to get home from Fairbanks last year!
