CCHA teams will join WCHA

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

Really? And what are the alternatives for BGSU? WCHA is obviously not their preference...

Yes, I understand that the WCHA does not look good to BGSU given their location. My only question was why did they wait until this point to try and save the CCHA? Trust me, I'm pro-WCHA but I would have been happy to see the CCHA stay around with 5 or 6 teams and the same for the WCHA. Northern and LSSU were reasonable adds to the WCHA. They were strong regional rivals with limited travel costs (for MTU). But to simply make a blind grab for every CCHA team left and disolve the conference is not in the best interest of college hockey. I've made several posts about this in other threads. If all the teams out there are so concerned about the future of college hockey, why are we talking about finding a conference home for teams that don't even exist (MN M-head, Buffalo, etc) and UAH still sits in the weeds all but begging for a conference to play hockey for their already established team and obviously die-hard desire to stay on the D-I map?

I have no problem with BGSU doing what is in their best interest. Heck this is all most everyone has done through this entire process. I'm just saying the timing is too late in the game now unless the plan is to take this conference jumping plague to the East and start breaking the AHA, ECAC and HE apart as well so there are more teams in the conference blender. If that happens, then I say we all just meet at center ice, throw out teams' stick in the pile and let the NCAA sort them into piles and then we go play hockey. It would make almost as much sense as some of what has already happened to this point.

The problem is that only the fans seem to be "begging for a conference" and have a "die-hard desire to stay". Unfortunately, it sounds like (If I read some of the other threads correctly) those in charge at the school are doing next to nothing to get any of that done while the team and its fans are dangling in the wind desperately fighting just to keep the interim president from chopping the program completely.
Although it can be said about past actions (like the CCHA denying them entry), it is difficult at this point to say the existing, re-made, or new conferences are screwing UAH. It sounds like at this point UAH's powers that be are doing a good enough job screwing Chargers Hockey themselves.

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

If Notre Dame comes to Hockey East (please no) then it's likely we'd expand to 12 teams. So either we'd end up with BGSU (no, no, please no) or we'd raid the ECAC or AHA (RPI seems to be the front runner) which would open up a spot for BGSU in one of those leagues.

I don't think BGSU was the school that was positioned to save the CCHA. Other schools were driving that engine and they took different paths. It seems to me that BG is looking at the options currently left on the table and moving the way they think is best for them.

Are "we" or "all the teams" supposed to ignore those teams that have legitimately expressed interest? How does that help UAH, or college hockey? I support UAH's desire to stay in the D1 landscape and wish them well. I think I missed just one UAH v Niagara game in Huntsville in the last 10 years or so, have made friends there that I email with, signed their petition and wish them all the success in saving their program. I know what it means to the fans there. Yet I understand the hesitancy of the other D1 schools ... UAH's program and stability has been undermined by their own administration (very frustrating) and, from what I heard, the knowledge that the program was almost certainly folding was a major cause of the conferences saying they were not interested. Additionally, UAH has problems with arena dates. I know the AHA4 wanted them to be able to make certain guarantees in that regard and UAH could not. Routinely playing games on Thursdays and Sundays, or afternoon games, was simply not going to cut it.

I'm just saying the timing is too late in the game now unless the plan is to take this conference jumping plague to the East and start breaking the AHA, ECAC and HE apart ...
How can it be too late when ND has not yet announced what it is doing? There will very likely be more movement once they announce. I sure hope there is ... I am hoping that the AHA4 + BGSU + ??? can figure out a way to make something work.

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

The CCHA "as it was" was dead moments after the Big Ten announced their conference. Notre Dame wasn't going to show any kind of loyalty to a bunch of Michigan and Ohio schools after the three BT schools left. At that point you're already at a dangerous level of 7 schools with the recent example of the CHA slowly rotting on the vine and it became everyone for themselves moments later with NMU and Miami leaving, followed by everyone else in a flood.

With OSU/MSU/ND/UM out, there's no center of gravity like the WCHA could claim pre-NCHC with the Minnesota schools. 1 Alaska school, 2 UP schools closer to the remnants of the WCHA, 2 lower Michigan schools and 2 Ohio schools.

I agree it is money but my thoughts were strictly to do with travel.

strictly due to travel? Its alot easier to deal with travel costs when your filling large venues with people paying good money to watch. You can't ignore the fact that if BGSU is increasing its travel costs from the old CCHA while decreasing it's revenues its not a good situation.

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

I thought you guys were talking about Buffalo State (SUNYAC, D-III) moving up.

The University at Buffalo doesn't have hockey at all today, do they? That's quite a leap, from nothing to D-I. That's an enormous, full D-I school, too.

I wouldn't hold my breath on BU jumping into the DI Hockey ranks. As a SUNY school money is more than a little tight right now. At least that's what they tell everyone when they jump tuition and drop programs.

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

I'm not holding my breath on BU either, but how fantastic would that be?

I know that I've been referring to the MAHC jokingly ever since the BTHC came to fruition, but I actually do think it would be a legitimate bonus for college hockey to get more of those schools involved. To be honest, I think WMU and Miami are more than likely to kill any chance of it ever happening, though, so perhaps I'd better keep my MAHC comments in jest.

Any reason to to be able to beat up on Central Michigan is great idea! Based on that alone, I would be strongly in support of MAC Hockey.

I never found it to be a problem for NYS to spend money they do not have. :D

And it is UB, folks ... UB

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

Yeah um ... D1 teams don't book on Orbitz.
to get to Alaska, Michigan Tech has to fly from Houghton to Chicago Seattle to Anchorage I believe. Might be able to chop out the Seattle part but still. Thats not a great flight compared to the old Houghton to Minneapolis to Anchorage they used to do when CMX was serviced by Delta/Northwest

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

Sorry, the booking wasn't done on Orbitz. But that 4 hour layover in Anchorage was so much fun.

Alaska Airlines has EIGHT flights a day from Anchorage to Fairbanks at 6:05am, 7:00am, 10:05am, 1:35pm, 3:20pm, 425pm, 7:00pm and 11:05pm.

Your anecdotal experience (which I've seen you mention more than once here) was atypical.
