CCHA teams will join WCHA

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

Ah, I see your point now. My bad. I see the whole Coach-comment, which was probably overstating things.

No problem.

I still stand by the belief that UND and UMD did more to support BSU than any other school. Its a belief, not a fact. :)

UMD and MSU Mankato were the only schools to schedule BSU every year while they were still in the CHA. Mankato scheduled home and home series every year and UMD scheduled BSU home and home most years. UND skipped several years in there, but in picking between the two, Grand Forks is less than 2 hours away on 4 lane road while Duluth is 3+ on mostly 2 lane roads - not to mention that the Sioux are top-10 every year while UMD, until last year, um, wasn't...

From that info, those three schools did more to support BSU while they were in the CHA than any others. That, however, does not necessarily correlat to the efforts behind the scenes in getting BSU into the WCHA (and I'm not saying they were against BSU - just that Maturi took the lead). In fact, the final effort to get BSU in was made by SCSU's Morris Kurtz in a phone call to UNO AD Trev Alberts. Had that call not gone well, the whole BSU and UNO thing was going to go away...

Thanks for the info Moose. Very interesting stuff. BTW, is your screen name Moose, as in Moose Goheen? Just curious :)

Ha! No, but this is a must read:

Just a nickname I've acquired (and use now for radio work)... Check out my show by clicking on the "College Hockey Tonight" link in my signature. The show runs every Friday during the BSU season, and the one on there now is from mid June when BSU had their golf fundraiser.

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

I believe the WCHA and CCHA got together and conspired how best to stick it to the NCHC. No such ill will towards the Big Ten.

I offer up the following predictions:

1. Denver and CC have a hell of a time filling out there non-conference schedule. Hello Bentley and American International. Try finding 14 non-conference games a year. (See CHA)
2. Big Ten and WCHA complete scheduling alliance talks. Big Ten has already said they have no interest in playing the NCHC non-conference. Read between the lines, Lucia is more supportive of BSU, SCSU and USU-M.
3. Minnesota will never play UND non-conference as long as Lucia is coaching.
4. NCHC will miss the Alaska exemption and Final Five money more than they anticipated. BSU will have an additional gate this year of around $240,000. UND would likely have generated twice that with two additional home games.
5. The Final Five at the Exel will continue to be the premier conference tournament from a competitive and fan friendly standpoint. League member hosted tournaments don't work. (See CHA)
6. Duluth will be the first NCHC member to apply for readmittance to the WCHA.
7. UND's severe case of Gopher envy, if left untreated, will be the cause of their eventual downfall. Even the Roman Empire couldn't keep it up.
8. Notre Dame sees several of the above as real concerns and takes forever before deciding to join Hockey East.
9. Western Michigan wonders why the NCHC and the WCHA don't return their phonecalls. Ever try to juggle two girlfriends.
10. Air Force will never, never, never join the WCHA or the NCHC. Quit talking about it.

Sensible and thoughtful replies only. Feel free to add your own predictions. The previous 11 pages of re-hashing was getting boring.

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

All the better, in that case you should have plenty of money to donate to UAH to save their hockey team.

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

Notre Dame's choices have always been either The National or Hockey East. The latest realignment news doesn't change that. There was zero chance Notre Dame would stick around in a diminished CCHA or WCHA. The only factors delaying Notre Dame's decision are television details and expansion plans for the NCHC. Notre Dame would prefer that the National stick to seven teams and a shorter conference schedule so they can still play Boston College and the Big Ten teams often. I think the National wants to go to eight teams and make it an even number. As they learned from the CCHA, having an odd number screws a lot of things up.

Yes, you are correct on all accounts!!

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

Bowling Green's AD finally just comes out and says what everyone's been thinking on here.

"I think history will tell us if there has been any damage. Some people [in the sport] have been great and have been above-board, and other have been a little disingenuous, and that's as far as I will go with that. When you have a sport that is played by 59 institutions, well, I don't want to use the word 'fragile,' but this isn't basketball where there is 300-some institutions playing.

"And I think there are some schools that would be just fine with that. They would be fine with hockey contracting to 45-50 schools — and that would be the end of this."

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

Yeah this is certainly looking like the backhoe about to start digging UAH's grave. This whole summer has been an ever dwindling list of possibilities for them. Now they have to hope that BGSU gets invited to the BHHC on the coattails of already coattail-riding WMU and then hope again that the WCHA would invite them?

I don't see how any of that happens much as I would like to see it.

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

Not a real surprise but The Mac Daily is reporting via twitter that BGSU should make their hockey decision next week, likely WCHA bound.

Bowling Green should make a hockey decision next week. It sounds like the Falcons are leaning towards the #WCHA.
