Re: Cars

Can't have it. But a new one would be cheaper.
It stays in PA

A Clearfield County man nabbed a rare 1969 Ford Mustang with a winning bid of $280,000 at auction Friday in Centre Hall.

George Cowfer, of Clearfield County, placed the winning bid.

The auction had the car world buzzing and was expected to draw a large crowd with out-of-town bidders for the sale of the Shelby GT500 428 Cobra Jet, one of only 1,534 made. Its former owner, the late Larry Brown, bought it new locally but only logged about 8,500 miles before garaging it for 40 years.

Re: Cars

If I had a the time, skill and money (so I'm not missing much), I'd like to kit-build a on old Mustang. I'd like to use modern tech on it - engine, suspension and adding a thing or two like power steering. Basically, the body styling from the 60's and early 70's are what I want.

Thats what alot of guys do. They change the front end, get rack and pinion steering, put in bigger brakes, change the rear end setup, maybe 4 link or something like that. The car still looks the same(until you look close) but they stop and handle alot different.

The body flex in that 69 is no joke, you put a big enough tire on it, that 428 will actually twist the body so that its bent and no longer useable

Here is a company that folks use for what you are saying

You call them restomods, look old, drive new

Re: Cars

Got a 2007 GTI Fahrenheit last Saturday. This thing is fun. The MIL is already on, but I was expecting that. I knew what I was getting into. :D

Re: Cars

the mister has has 1969 Chevy Impala 427 3 deuces.
he bought it in 1975. it goes fast. really fast.

but he has always been a Ford guy and bought a 1963 and a half Galaxie 500 XL with a 427 this winter. his dream car. I haven't seen it yet. can't wait for a ride, or better yet a drive.

so today he goes down to Denver and I get an email that says in its entirety "406". he bought a 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 406. both are "arrest me red" with either red or black interiors.

oh wow. now we need a pole barn to store them in.
sell Nordstrom stock short. I wont be shopping anytime soon.

Can I be an heir? Please? ;)

Re: Cars

Can I be an heir? Please? ;)

why not? ;) before the Chevy got restored it sat in the yard with flat tires. UPS and Fed Ex guys would always mention it. I would say, hey, haul it away and its yours. then the muscle car craze set in, prices skyrocketed and now I'm a fan. we might sell the Chevy. it's an extremely rare car. with the big engine, buckets and four on the floor. you could special order them, but they were never listed in any GM sales material. production records are sketch. somewhere between 50 - 250 built. every time we think about selling the kids started the "but we never knew life without the Chevy."

he got a super deal on the 1963 and a half. and its a car he's wanted for 34 years. went to insure it and no way would they insure for what he paid. they thought he should go $25,000 more. holy wah! should be interesting to see how the 406 comes in. no clones, VIN numbers matching. come visit and bring the squeeze, you can drive them. and pick which one you want to inherit. :)

A 406? What the heck is that? The 427 is one cool car. Is it a real 427 ford? IE, matching numbers?

Re: Cars

I was curious about that, too. From Wiki, Ford made the 406 for two years until they replaced it with the 427.

In the 60s? 390 would be more common or even a 352 but 406, that's a new one on me, sounds like a 406 would be a rare car if only made for 2 years.

Re: Cars

I think Ford tried to put the 390 in everything for a little while.

From Wiki:

The 406 engine used a new 4.13-inch (104.90 mm) bore with the 390's 3.785-inch (96.14 mm) stroke, giving a displacement of 405.7 cu in (6.6 L), rounded up to "406" for the official designation. The larger bore required a new block casting design allowing for thicker walls, but otherwise was very similar to the 390 block.[33]

It was available for less than two years before it was replaced by the 427.

Testing of the 406, with its higher power levels, led to cross-bolted mains – that is, main bearing caps that were secured not only by bolts at each end coming up from beneath, but also by bolts coming in from the sides through the block. A custom fit spacer was used between the cap and the block face. This design prevented the main bearing caps from "walking" under extreme racing conditions, and can be found today in many of the most powerful and modern engines from many manufacturers.

*shrug*

Oh how I wish I'd kept my 69 GTO that I owned for a couple of years. Unfortunately, those couple of years were in the middle of the 70's oil crisis . :(

From Hemmings:

These were made for only two months Ford guys argue if this engine even exists, they were only made in 1963 1/2 then they were followed up with the legendary ford 427 four bolt main top-oiler. This engine is standard bore and stroke. The engine block sat on a dealers shelf for over 45 years before I found it.

Found this, too. Note the bold text.

Called the Thunderbird 406 High-Performance-V-8, but available only in the Galaxie, the new engine cost $380 and came with a heavy-duty suspension, fade-resistant drum brakes, high-capacity radiator, and 15-inch wheels instead of 14s

Re: Cars

those GTO's were hot!

engine talk … what they said.

yes, all numbers matching. all original and unrestored for the 427. loving owners kept it up. the 406 has been restored. personally I like the "patina" the old chrome gets, so we don't rechrome anything. I think 1963? was the only year Ford made both the 406 and the 427?

Very nice cars, wish I could see them
Big block muscle cars are awesome

Re: Cars

When I was in High School my best friend had a black 65 or 66 impala which we drove everywhere. it was a coupe with a v 8 but I have no idea what engine, and white leather. A great car and I can understand the hubby's like for it.

Re: Cars

First car was a '66 Bel Air. 250 straight 6 and a 2 speed automatic transmission. Was a joy to drive to college and work on.

Couple friends had them with the 396. Moved right along. ;)

Re: Cars

I have a buddy that thought he had a '72 Le Mans that someone tinkered with. For years he drove around under this assumption. One day he noticed his nose was coming loose and got under the thing to see what he could do. Something just didn't look right. Decides for the first time to check the VIN. You guessed it, GTO.

He has since acquired all of the parts he needs to switch it back, but has left the Le Mans trim on. He enjoys having a sleeper. :)
