Re: Cars

The metro area stretches beyond the loop now, but not by much in the West.

You just don't expect to see these cars in these areas. Evidently my Fahrenheit GTI lived in Royalton (almost two hours west on US10) for most of its life. Only 1200 were made for the States, how did one end up there?

I totally get the bit about "not expecting." It still blows my mind. But hey, guess it happens. Notsomuch for cost (b/c rich people do live out here) it's more culture/environment to me. These are pickup truck/maybe Hummer type people. Not super fancy Italian sports cars....

Re: Cars

. My concern of course is reliability..

Don't know anything about the car but you can bet when it breaks you'll be opening up the wallet.Maybe beat the crap out of it and trade before warranty expires? My guess would be the car sucks to work on from a mechanic point of view. On the other hand once you drive it I doubt you'll be taking it on a cross country tour. You'll find bumpy roads aren't that comfortable in it. I'll bet its a blast to drive but several hours in it and you'll want to get out. I'd love to take it for a test drive but I doubt I'd even fit in it :)

Re: Cars

Since Doc lives in NJ and I am by birth a New Jerseyite, there is always the New Jersey Turnpike where the speed limits are loosely enforced.

Joe: Years ago(1980's) as one of the police surgeons for NJ i was fortunate enough to have the State Police take me oput to a brand new unopened section of Route 18 in central Jersey to try out my 911. They were in their big old Ford crown vics doing 120+ and i just blew them off the road while still in 4th gear. Clicked off a mile in 24 seconds as those little mileposts went flicking by before i got scared-the thought came to mind about a small pothole or an animal darting across. Have to admit it was a blast though for a short time. Witht he population explosion down here and constant construction on the GSP and NJ Turnpike-there is just no place to open up and blow out a car. We really do even get a chance to enjoy that high speed thrill from any of our Audis any more.
I just thought this is the time-late 60's for me and if i don't get that one last supercar-it will not happen. In 5 or so more years i do not think i will have either the desire or the reflexes left to drive something like that. We have acquaintances that have some extremely expensive cars-but they opt more for the luxury than the power. As someone already posted-and it has dawned on me this year abruptly-you go through once, so why not just enjoy it while you still can.

Re: Cars

What about a Ferrari Testosterone er Testarossa?

Joe: Neighbor has one-striking in looks-but an absolute tin can inside. Also, I think his mechanic drives it more than he does. Probably one of the few cars that are actually a good financial investment as they hold or increase value. But leaning much more towards the others.

No doubt-but it would just be the fun car. Would never use it as an everyday commuter or take it places where the ride would not be enjoyable. Not exactly the car i would take to dinner and flip the keys to the valet and say 'go park it for me'.

Sounds like you have a good understanding of the vehicle and as long as you don't wreck I doubt you'd lose a lot of money on it. It will be worth close to what you bought it for when you want out of it if you take care of it. I say buy it, come up to Maine with it and take me for a drive, I know a good road where you can work it out :)

My childhood neighbor had a '72 Pantera. Canary yellow. He maybe drove it 5-6 times per summer. Such a nice-looking car.

We may take you up on that. Once we get some more things settled down here-both Jenny and i need an extended period of time of just getting away from it all. Besides, we could combine it with one of jaunts up to LL Bean in Freeport.

Fortunately there have been times we have had that one car that we obviously did not need for daily use that we did the same. Over the years we did that with a 911(actually a car i felt I could drive everyday if needed but just never did) and an Audi R8. One of the problems with being based in overcrowded NJ is that driving any of these cars becomes less enjoyable when you are just sitting in traffic or going from one red light to the next. Now with the massive road construction on the Garden State Parkway and the Turnpike-open road driving choices are getting just too limited. When we stay up in the Adirondacks of course all of that changes-but we hate to just leave that kind of car up there unless we will be staying for an extended peirod of time and that has just not happened enough recently.

Re: Cars

One of the few advantages of getting old-we do not have to save much more for the future. Being a bit of a car fanatic I have had a lot of vehicles in my life. Yesterday Jenny and I took one for a spin that I have wanted to drive very badly. We took out a Maserati Quattroporte GTS. It was really a very elegantly appointment rocket ship that handled like it was on rails. Had my heart set on a Porsche Turbo S or a Carrera Targa 4S but now have a new one to consider. If I am ever going to do this, it has to be soon as I am rapidly getting to an age where this would just be a ridiculously stupid idea. Would appreciate anyone here with any input on these two-I have had Porsches before(always preferred German cars to anything else) and a long list of Audis and Mercedes and this would be my first foray into an Italian made vehicle. Jenny, of course thinks i am totally bonkers with this. She says if I am really going to be this crazy, to look at a Bentley GT Speed. At least that is a car we can service at our local Audi dealer since the engine is theirs. I have seen some posts about some fabulously expensive cars here before, but they would be totally out of our range(we have driven a veyron but it was not ours and woul dhave zero practicality in our life). None of these cars would be our major driving car as we have several others. The car would be just a final lark(perhaps old age crazy instead of middle age crazy).

Please don't take this personally, but f* k you.

Route 458??
I would get the '65 Chevy up to 85 on the way up to Clarkson. I would imagine a 911 could easily hit triple figures on that road.

I don't since I fully understand the source it came from.:) BTW got to drive the Bentley today-doesn't have the superWOW factor of the others but that may be it's biggest asset. Doesn't draw the eyepopping attention as you drive down the road. Some of the attention(like the state and local police) is decidedly unwanted.

Joe: Years ago used to run the 911 from Blue Mt lake to Indian Lake daily. It is almost exactly 11 miles on a twisty up and down route 28. Barely any traffic ever on that stretch most days and i routinely could cover the distance between 6 and 7 minutes. Scariest part is realizing that at any time you could hit an animal darting out from the woods and it was sobering enough to stop me from doing that. But must admit, it was a real blast the few times I did it. The Northway from Schroon Lake heading northward used to be wonderful back in the dark ages and we would often get off and head west through Newcomb towards Long Lake and really open it up. I fear with population growth that those days are now gone.

Screw the Bentley, if you are going to go for it, go for it. Make sure it isn't red

Sleeper is good - that's why I love my Volvo V70R :)

Speaking of Swedish iron - this is for those of us who don't have supercar cash. ;)

Re: Cars

A red British car? Sacrilege!!!!
Black or green

French is blue
German is silver
Italian is red
A British car is sacrilege, period. In fact if I was the Doc, I'd go order the biggest baddest corvette they make, get it fixed at any of the thousands of GM dealerships, my guess is it will smoke any of the cars mentioned so far.

Had only one Corvette in my life-a long time ago and jet bloack in color. Got stopped by the police more in that car than any other with perhaps the exception of the 911. Honestly once got stoped on I-87 near Halfmoon NY-doing 50 mph when the limit was 55. I suspect the cop just wanted to look inside the car and also since I had NJ plates i was a prime target being out of state.
