One of the few advantages of getting old-we do not have to save much more for the future. Being a bit of a car fanatic I have had a lot of vehicles in my life. Yesterday Jenny and I took one for a spin that I have wanted to drive very badly. We took out a Maserati Quattroporte GTS. It was really a very elegantly appointment rocket ship that handled like it was on rails. Had my heart set on a Porsche Turbo S or a Carrera Targa 4S but now have a new one to consider. If I am ever going to do this, it has to be soon as I am rapidly getting to an age where this would just be a ridiculously stupid idea. Would appreciate anyone here with any input on these two-I have had Porsches before(always preferred German cars to anything else) and a long list of Audis and Mercedes and this would be my first foray into an Italian made vehicle. Jenny, of course thinks i am totally bonkers with this. She says if I am really going to be this crazy, to look at a Bentley GT Speed. At least that is a car we can service at our local Audi dealer since the engine is theirs. I have seen some posts about some fabulously expensive cars here before, but they would be totally out of our range(we have driven a veyron but it was not ours and woul dhave zero practicality in our life). None of these cars would be our major driving car as we have several others. The car would be just a final lark(perhaps old age crazy instead of middle age crazy).

go for it. its the same with my mister. he wanted one of his cars for 34 years and I told him "get the car!" you won't live forever and enjoy it while you can. and almost all classics appreciate in price, so they can be a good investment. that Maserati sounds sweet!

I have gone a bit further than that. It has been over 3 months since a devastating tragedy in my life and i just felt it time to move on with living. With no real reason to save for the future other than to support our own lifestyle, I have decided to just do as you mention-you only live once. I drove a loaded Maserati. The good-nothing i have ever been in sounds so good. The interior is magnificent leather than is softer than any coat i ever wore. The power and handling-on a par with anything I ever drove. My concern of course is reliability. Never having ventured into this Italian market and having only one friend who drives a Testarosa does not help. This week we are heading over to porsche to drive the 911 CarreraS 4(which is pretty much like what I have had before) and they are holding a 911 Turbo 4 for me to look at(something i have never driven). Then it's over to Bentley to placate Jenny who feels at this stage instead of flash we should go for substance and loves the look and feel of the GT8 or GT Speed. The big plus there is it is pretty much all Audi under the hood. The negative is obvious-the price is far higher than the other cars. It may come down to how much WOW factor I want at this advanced stage of my life or how much plush. Shame is, why couldn't i have had the ability to have these kinds of cars about 40 years ago-when I was a young dude looking to drive a chick magnet? My old VW beetle and SAAB 99E was not exactly flashy and attention grabbing. Will let you know how it goes. But if anyone has any input on these cars please let me know.

Never had the feeling you just described until now-was always financially responsible and conservative. Only recently have i realized that what you say is spot on. But not being knowledgeable about these ultra cars makes me reach out for anyone who has some expertise and can offer some advice.

Seriously, Doc - there are many of us who are "petrol heads" who are going to live vicariously through you knowing we might never be in a position to even consider purchasing one of the cars you're considering.

I have a buddy that used to sell Maseratis. There are cars that may perform a little better, but nothing sounds better. That Maserati growl is gorgeous.

Never was a fan of Maseratis.
Funny note: there's a used car dealership between Minnetonka and Delano (MN) that has a black DeLorean for sale. That'd be a fun car to have for novelty purposes.
Edit: there's also an owner of a Lambo Murcielago, canary yellow, that I think lives in Delano MN. I've seen it twice now in the past month. Gorgeous car.

See, now I'm not a fan of Lamborghini. Cripes I'd take one, no doubt about that, but I'm more of a Ferrari guy when it comes to those sorts of dreams.
I've been taken for a ride in the car Doc is talking about, albeit a few years older. Holy. Balls.
This buddy I'm talking about sold a Maserati to Derek Boogaard. He was convinced he wouldn't buy it because he didn't fit into the thing. Boogaard said later that part of the reason he bought it was because my buddy didn't pressure him at all because of that. Pretty funny.

Very weird to see one out there. Reminds me of being between Duluth and Grand Rapids on US2 and seeing a CCXR going the other way. Took a quadrupletake on that one. Nearly went into the ditch.
Had the urge to turn around and follow and talk to the person that had it, but I didn't because there was no way I was catching them.

Agreed on the reaction. The first time I saw it, it was about 2 miles east of Delano* going east. The second time, it was around Maple Plain, going east. Around the same of day, on the same day of the week.
*For the non-locals, Delano is kind of a red-neck town of 5000 or so, 20 minutes west of the "metro area" that I consider the "metro area" (outside the main loop of highways, if you look at a map of the Twin Cities). And Maple Plain is in between Delano and the metro area.

The metro area stretches beyond the loop now, but not by much in the West.
You just don't expect to see these cars in these areas. Evidently my Fahrenheit GTI lived in Royalton (almost two hours west on US10) for most of its life. Only 1200 were made for the States, how did one end up there?
