Re: Cars

I test drove two cars today. A Focus ST and a Mustang GT. The Mustang felt like a big strong car, but the chassis didn't seem to keep up with all that power, of which there was a whole lot, and the gearbox was only fair, especially at the 5-6 shift where it would be easy to end up in 4th..

The ST was much faster than I expected, the chassis was great, with tons of grip, and the gearbox extremely easy to use. My only complaints were, it had more torque steer at the 3 -4 shift( around 70 mph and at 6000 in 3ed) than I was expecting, and the brake pedal was pretty high. Otherwise Wow!.

Factory shifters in Mustangs leave much to be desired. Tons of high quality precision short throw shifters out there for the Mustang that eliminate that vague gear / shift feel and basically "snap" into the proper, intended gear without fail. They're a must in a Mustang IMO.

anybody here buy a car off Cars.com or Autotrader etc.? Of the private sellers I've responded to I've gotten one response...and that was an attempt at fraud. Can't tell if the others are lazy, already sold it or what. I included the right words to indicate I was a buyer, not a shopper and wasn't looking to finance the transaction...things that I would have thought got at least an email or phone call back. Just curious if others have had different results.

So, an update. Finally found and bought car Friday. 45 minutes from the location, my phone rings...it is a seller from the first inquiry I ever put in. He had been moving and hadn't checked his email for a long time.

I did find the car I bought on cars.com. The tally would be:

1 found and purchased
1 case of clear fraud found and reported
1 case of had the check cut when found out dealer was not truthful about details
1 case where taking it to another dealer for review prevented a huge mistake
2 cars sold while I was wringing my hands
5-6 cases of leaving messages and emails with no reply

All in all, what they tell you is true...sign up for carfax first and use that as primary filter on any prospects. That saves so much wasted time. Go for low mileage, the risk of multi-owner, high mileage cars isn't worth saving a few bucks today. Double check everything. If you have any friends that are car experts, include them in your search, they will provide a good sounding board.

Re: Cars

:eek::eek::eek:

I have seen ONE Lotus in real life on the road in my life. Last summer, Elise, yellow, Plymouth area. Like SOH, had to do the quintuple-take.

There's a red Elise running around Anchorage right now. I seem to recall seeing an Esprit as well.

Re: Cars

I had the chance to drive a pristine, Mitsubishi 3000 gt vr-4, twin turbo this week. For it's time it was really fast and it was fun to drive. Pretty agile for it's size too. They can be found for cheap, and are a lot of fun for the money. Not good in snow however.

Re: Cars

I was down in the Western Carolinas for the Memorial Day weekend with another poster and my girlfriend. We had some free time, so we drove around the Smokey Mountains a bit, and I got to drive the rental car on The Tail of The Dragon, which was pretty **** awesome. It was a Lincoln MDX, so it wasn't exactly ideal for the road, but it wasn't horrible either. It was crazy. It felt like we were going way too fast, and I'd look down at the speedo and we'd be going 30mph. Very fun road to drive.

After we got done with the Tail, we headed to Greenville, SC, and decided to take Hwy 64 from Franklin through Highlands, Cashiers and Sapphire. That is another awesome road. It gets very narrow in areas between Franklin and Highlands, but we got to see a few waterfalls along it, including 1 that we could walk behind, and another that we could drive behind. Overall, it was a very fun drive, I just wish we could have gotten a little sportier car, but with the need to haul around golf club travel cases, we needed something bigger.

Re: Cars

So today at church I ran into a buddy who is an exec at Ford. I started asking him about the new Mustang due out next year. He says, don't worry it will look like a Mustang and it will have a V 8. He said it will have less overhang then the present model, be very slightly smaller, with more interior room. I asked him if it would have independent rear suspension, to which the answer was..... total silence. HMMMMM.

Re: Cars

Generally refers to less / shorter body lengths extending beyond axles / wheels at front and rear.

I'd be quite surprised if Ford went with IRS on the Mustang.

Re: Cars

There's a controlled intersection near my house I pass through every day to access State Hwy 36 to get into St. Paul or Minneapolis from the east. The past 2-3 weeks while sitting and waiting for a green light A steel gray Lambo Gallardo has crossed through the intersection about a half dozen times. Must be parked in some nearby garage. Awesome, beautiful sound.

I don't know why, but to hear 36 referred to as "State Highway 36" made me laugh. I don't think I've ever heard it called that (even though that is its proper name).

IRS has been rumored. As I recall, there was a Cobra IRS for earlier Mustangs, either Fox or SN95.

There are also rumblings about a turbo-four being offered as an optional power plant. That would be the first time Ford offered a turbo-four-powered Mustang since the discontinuation of the SVO in 1986 (though they continued to use the turbo-2.3 in Thunderbirds in '87 and '88).

Yes, both interesting. Jack Roush offers, as standard on the GT 350, IRS as well.. That might be a good route to go.

BTW my buddy told me that Ford has had problems with the 1.6 in the Focus, and is only now getting them straightened out, though the turbo 2.0 on the ST is doing quite well. If you were looking for about 300 HP, a turbo 2.4 might work quite nicely.

Yeah, the IRS rumors have been around for a long time. I understand the arguments and advantages of IRS but I've owned several Foxes and SN-95 Mustangs and am kind of a keep it simple proponent. Had very good experience with the venerable 8.8 that's easy to beef up for power adding. Add an Auburn Pro and some forged Moser axles and your good for lots of HP and torque without breaking the bank. They're fairly bulletproof.

There are quite a few excellent aftermarket IRS systems out there for bolting into the Mustang. Half shafts and CV joints scare me a little. The Mustang isn't exactly the poor man's muscle car it was for many years. Factory IRS for all production Mustangs would have a noticeable impact on the base price I'd assume. I bought a new SVT Mustang Cobra for under 30K in 1997. A decent Mustang nowadays is north of 40K so a typical buyer probably wouldn't care about the cost of IRS.

For the current Mustang, one should be able to put the rear end of a Lincoln LS in it. That's where this Mustang was spawned from. Not sure how much of that still exists under the car, but it IS from the DEW98.

And this is why you don't stand near the guardrails at the Nordschleife.
