Canadian National Team

Re: Canadian National Team

How crazy is that...in a 24 hour period - Can/US - Juniors and Womens Olympic teams both go to shootouts...unbelievable.

Just got home from watching this game live. Very interesting game to watch. Erie similarities to the Junior Matchup. The US has more speed and the Canadian D at times had trouble with the first pass out of the zone.

Both teams went at it physically and the ref let them play for the most part. The US had more quality chances, but the canucks scored on a gimme to Vaillancourt early and on a bang bang speed play from Agosta in the third. US tied it up in the dying seconds on a 6 on 4, with not one but two white shirts all free in front of Labonte. Canucks had the better chances in the OT. Hefford scored a beauty in the shootout to win it.

On the Canuck squad, Poulin, Irwin and Ouellette and Apps the better Canuck players up front. Both St-Pierre and Labonte solid in nets. Vetter was great in nets for the US. Canucks took runs at her at times, but she was undeterred. Ms Knight is an awesome player. Darwitz, Lawler and Duggan are the other US forwards that IMHO had good games.

A great night for womens hockey, about 16,300 in the rink. Saw many of the who is who in this region in womens hockey at the rink. There were some teams there from Toronto, noticed a Brampton squad and some Bluewater players of younger ages.

OnMAA.

Sounds like it was a very exciting evening in Ottawa. With respect to the officials letting them play...under IIHF officiating in the Olympics everything will change as the games will be called differently. Watch for lots of penalties and subsequently plenty of opportunities for specialty teams to make or break their teams chances of advancement.

It was exciting....Check out this great article about it. Note that the first Worlds back in 1990 was in Ottawa, when Angela James and co wore sweaters with the Pink Maple leaf....

Most of you should enjoy this flash back. The game has come a long way....Check out this SI article from 1990.....

""They're tougher creatures than we ever gave them credit for," said
MacLeod. "Lauren Apollo [6 feet, 170 pounds], she'd like to rip the
building down. Shawna Davidson [5' 9 in., 170], she's tough as nails.
Most of the girls like the hitting."

"A good thing, because the U.S. needed to be tough to keep up with Canada
in the final. Despite their hot-pink uniforms, the Canadians proved to
be a rugged, physical team
. The Americans started strongly, taking a
1-0 lead 2:25 into the game on a goal by Cindy Curley, the tournament's
high scorer. Davidson added to the U.S. lead by banging in her own
rebound almost 14 minutes later. But then the Canadians scored five
straight goals to win the gold medal."

OnMAA,

Are you from the Ottawa area?

Was just up at the Bell Cup. Great people, great hockey, great tournament.

There is a girl on the Burnaby Boys Atom Major AAA team. Best 10 - 11 year old girl I have ever seen.

A few years ago a kid by the name of Ambrose was a star on her boys AAA team when they played in this event. She is now 15 and the youngest player on the TC-U18 team. She is also one of a only handfull of 14 year olds over the years that cracked the Ontario U18 lineup. One of the other ones in that handfull is Irwin who now plays for the TC NWT and UMD.

Re: Canadian National Team

Sash Hochlander would have been 22 years old in two weeks. Tragically she was taken from us in a car accident yesterday just South of Calgary.

This determined, diminutive and tenacious forward who laced them up for the University of Vermont Catamounts, Mount Royal University Cougars, AMMFHL Chaos and Bruins, was a proud alumni of the Edge School for Athletes, Calgary, AB. and was the epitome of what a person and a hockey player should be.

Sash was the kind of kid who had a knack for finding the back of the net and when she did she would go straight to her teamates to celebrate. Almost bowl them over. No "jumping into the glass" or "riding her stick" for Sash. She knew it took team work and it was that attitude that made her such an excellant player and friend.

Sash was in her 4th year of Child Studies at Mount Royal University and found her true passion in her work with developmentally challeneged children.

Her infectious smile and effervescent attitude will be sorley missed by her Family, Friends and Teamates including the entire hockey community in Calgary.

"When we come into this world we cry and everyone rejoices, when we leave this world everyone crys but we rejoice"...Rest in Peace ...little one.

Thanks Quixote. I know this means a lot to Sash's family.

We will all miss her deeply.

Not many viewing this thread will understand how very intelligent and appropriate this post was. I only saw a couple of games that Sash played, but it was enough to understand this this was a young woman who embodied the spirit of teamwork that hockey at its best represents. My daughter also played for the Calgary Bruins, and when I saw Sash play it occurred to me that I would have loved to see these two play together. Thanks, "5 for fighting", for a post that reminds us of why some of us believe that womens hockey attracts the best.
