Indiana state Sen. Jim Tomes (R) has proposed a bill that would make it a crime for transgender people to use public sex-specific restrooms that don’t conform to their gender at birth.

Whichever one he or she, the coaches, and the other athletes decide on after they sit down together and discuss it like adults. Problem solved.

An FYI question -- would you be comfortable with your daughter in a locker room with Roberta, who used to be known as Bob? Remember this is HS, not college or professional.

I would be, and I can say with confidence that my daughters would have been as well when they were in HS not many years ago. But let me ask: Would you be comfortable with your daughter in a locker room with Roberta, who is a lesbian. I would be comfortable with that as well, and I was in that situation in high school with so problem whatsoever. If you played sports, you probably were also. I never witnessed or heard a first hand account of inappropriate sexual conduct involving a gay or transgender person in that situation, but I have witnessed acts of bullying and harassment in that situation which would fall withing the legal definition of assault and which had nothing to do with sexual preference or gender identification.

But your question does get dicier if the district in which the kid attends school is one which encourages or openly tolerates hatred or intolerance of lgbt individuals. In those cases, it's not a question of which locker room but which cave.

Is a kid really going to dress like a girl, act like a girl, and possibly start hormone treatment, simply to see some bewbage in the locker room?

I'm uncomfortable because I don't want her abused. If there is a locker room incident (of any type) I expect it to be reported (esp. to me) and acted upon by the school / organization immediately.

Now here's a kicker - I run a local USA Hockey HS league. Out of our 1,000 or so students, do we have gay athletes? Probably. Do I care? No. As far as I know, we do not have a TG student. However, I expect one day to have one. Do I care? For the 1st TG student, yes, because we'll be establishing precedent and we have to get it right right from the start. There's all sorts of literature on NFHS.org that cover TG issues that are a source and when I first read them, started me thinking of creating a safe play environment for everyone, regardless of sex, color, religion, place of origin, orientation, etc. USA Hockey is useless.

So then what? What do you think should happen? You cant just ask the question and not tel us what you would do. Personally I say let the athlete be in the lockerroom they feel most comfortable in...but that is way too obvious and concerned with the feelings of others so what would I know?

Because pretending to be transgendered in order to see boobies is clearly something that is going to happen given the wonderful treatment society gives to transgendered people...

Here's an idea, get your procedures in place now. Contact your state's human/civil rights agency to get their opinions/legal advice. They'll most likely be happy to help someone being proactive instead of reactive.

So you're convinced that your kids would be abusive? That's kind of the only conclusion that can be drawn from your posts.

???? My kid being abusive? No, I said I would not want her to be abused. Just I would not like your kid, or Kepler's kid to be abused or hazed or whatever is demeaning.

Ohhh I thought you were saying you cared about "Roberta's" safety, but your still in the fantasy land where people pretend to be TG so they can see naked girls. "Roberta" would be in far more danger than your kid.
