Campaign 2016 Part XIII: Clinton destrueretur est. Trump est destruetur. Vox Populi!

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIII: Clinton destrueretur est. Trump est destruetur. Vox Pop

Hillary Clinton's shortcomings are commonplace among far too many politicians. Finding one who is completely honest, and always acts in a 100% completely ethical manner is probably impossible. There hasn't been a president in the history of the republic that hasn't told bald-faced lies to the American public, either as a candidate or as commander-in-chief. But I think bigotry is an ultimate sin and a totally disqualifying trait for anyone who wants to be president. And I do not differentiate between holding the beliefs yourself, or pandering to those who do

This is where I depart with the right or even the middle. I just don't think her downside is that bad. Every serious politician that doesn't want to completely blow up our way of doing things is signed up with big business. It just matters which businesses and to what extent. They're all there. Where she does stand out is on this email issue. But if you've been operating in or around the white house for over 20 years and that's the worst thing on your resume? You deserve all the cake. So her positives is she has umpteen times the relevant experience of any other candidates...without that much really bad baggage. If she had any charisma, this wouldn't even be a thread.

NRO may be clueless of their partial responsibility for turning the GOP into an actual fascist party, but they sure don't like it when it goes against them.

it is impossible for a mentally and emotionally normal adult to support Donald Trump’s bid for the presidency without calling into question his judgment or his honor

It may be that Senator Cruz and Governor Kasich made that primary-debate promise to support the eventual nominee in the hope — in the idiotic, forlorn hope — that the Republican primary electorate would not be so backward and malevolent as to choose an imbecilic game-show host to the left of Hillary Rodham Clinton on most of the relevant issues of our time over a slew of solid and impressive if imperfect conservatives. I can see Ted Cruz reenacting the final scene of Planet of the Apes: “You maniacs! You did it!” Of course he didn’t think that Sean Hannity’s tangerine dream would become America’s Creamsicle nightmare, but here we are.

Of course, Senator Cruz et al. should have known well before the grassy-knoll and eek-a-Mexican-judge stuff that Donald Trump is unfit for the office of the presidency. And that is what he is: morally, intellectually, and politically unfit for office. Is Hillary Rodham Clinton actually Satan in the flesh? Of course Hillary Rodham Clinton is actually Satan in the flesh; Donald Trump is still unfit for office. It isn’t Ted Cruz’s fault, or John Kasich’s, or Marco Rubio’s, or Jeb Bush’s, that the American public in free and fair elections chose two major-party candidates whose preening self-regard, dishonesty, moral cowardice, and incompetence is in each candidate’s case the best and only argument for the other candidate. Well done, America.

It's everybody's fault but theirs. The conservative elite cannot fail, they can only be failed.

This should salve moderate conservative worry about Clinton, while likely bugging some of my liberal friends. Personally I applaud it -- idealistic goals go nowhere without pragmatic leadership and bridge-building.

Movement conservatives and Professional Media Warriors will doubtless treat her just like Obama, unwilling (and unable because of their constituents) to compromise with their Cardboard Cutout Satan, but those zealots and con men have put themselves outside the conversation in any case. There will be room for sincere adults of both parties.

That's a lovely tome by the Times, but the base claim is someone after election will run to the middle. Candidates run to the base in the primaries; run to the middle in the general; and then have to satisfy the donors in office. I don't recall a run to the middle by anyone after getting elected.

538's prediction -- likelihood, EV and Pop % -- to be updated daily from now until election night.

Current Clinton numbers:

78% likelihood
343 EV (270 to win)
48.7% PV

Barring anything of major consequence for either candidate (Clinton being indicted or a recent picture surfacing of Trump wearing the pointed hood of a KKK costume or him getting dumped by the party in Cleveland) I think the only thing to wonder about in this election is which state can Clinton win that democratic candidates have been consistently losing for the last 7 or 8 elections to win a landslide (at least an electoral college landslide -- there are far too many bigots among our people for her to win a popular landslide) or which states that Obama won in 2008 or 2012 could Trump possibly pick up to either make this a nail biter or to actually win?

For Clinton, it's tough. Heavily Latino states that were within 10 points? AZ or maybe GA I guess? UT if the Mormon hatred of Trump is real.

For Trump I'd look at the whitest states that Obama has taken in non-landslide numbers: NH, ME and IA, maybe CO.

It's possible trump will take one electoral vote from Maine. The second district is full of dumb rednecks and trump is polling even with Hillary there. Hillary has a comfortable lead in the first district. (Full disclosure, I live in a blue town in the red second district. )

Why the difference in districts? Rural vs city?

NE-2 (ie Omaha) could go hillary to offset that.

...or a recent picture surfacing of Trump wearing the pointed hood of a KKK costume...

Please. It would give Trump a six point boost and lock up the southern vote.

This man could put a puppy into a burlap sack, light it on fire, and dump it into the Hudson on live TV, shout that Hillary would have dumped a truck load of kittens, and get a boost in the polls.

That's the one Obama got in 2008, right?

I thought the NE state leg redrew that so it wouldn't happen again.

I don't know if this is facetious or not, but I think you're actually correct, it would boost him in the polls. But unless it gives him a clear majority, it would be the straw that breaks the camel's back as far as the party establishment goes and they'd kick him off the stage and off the ticket.

This will just renew all of the "Hillary the Drunk" memes and speculation that amuse the far-right corners of the Internet.

Yes, District 1 is Portland area, aka northern Mass , District 2 is a modern day wasteland where most chances at a decent living are gone( exception being along coast) While I agree Trump has a chance at D2, I doubt he wins it
