Campaign 2016 -- Don't Let the Perfect Become the Enemy of the Good

Re: Campaign 2016 -- Don't Let the Perfect Become the Enemy of the Good

I don't see the proclaimed apocalyptic shock value out of this. Doesn't Trump "run" for president every cycle anyway, as an attention grab for his other ventures? I could be wrong, but he seems as regular as Huckabee.
edit: It looks like his past presidential foray was a ruse where the "big announcement" turned out to be that he was dropping out of the race ("And be sure to watch my TV show on Tuesday nights!") Don't fall for it.

You mean the party whose relatively young educated (not sure about middle class) man of color sits in the White House? There's some truth in what you say, but not as much as you make it sound like.

Actually, yeah... you make a very good point. :)

Obama certainly came from middle class roots. He'll be rich once the speaking endorsements kick in.

He's rich now. He was rich before he ran for POTUS.

I'm not sure about that, though he did go to Punahou, which is Hawaiian for "Phillips Academy."

When they release IRS filings during election times, his 2011 income was just over $789G. In 2009, before actually being POTUS got in the way, his income was over $5.5MM.

The man is rich, and was rich before becoming POTUS.

Yah, if he wasn't doing this constantly it'd be a bit more interesting. He'll say a few stupid things and make a fool out of himself here and there and then fade away and a lot of people won't even notice.

True. Compared to most of us regular folk, he was already doing quite well, but it'll certainly ramp up further when he leaves office. He'll be around forever, kinda like Bill Clinton.

It'll be interesting to see what he does. Carter has had a long career doing good things like Habitat for Humanity. Clinton has had a long career paving the way for Hillary. Who was the last president who had a significant political achievement after his term? Taft?

Taft went to the Senate, right? Was it Garfield who went on to SCOTUS after his presidency?

Re: Campaign 2016 -- Don't Let the Perfect Become the Enemy of the Good

Garfield died four months into term. Taft went to SCOTUS.

Well, somebody went on to serve in the Senate after his term(s) ended. He was either towards the end of the 1800s or very early 1900s. I get that period of presidents lost quite a bit.

I believe the Senator was Andrew Johnson. He was also in the Senate before his Presidency, and was allowed to remain because he did not sanction secession; the only southern representative to do so. He only served a few months in the Senate after Presidency before his death.

To be fair political achievements after the Presidency are pretty rare. Taft - SCOTUS. Andrew Johnson - Senate. John Quincy Adams - House Speaker. I think that's about it although I suppose you could count T. Roosevelt running for a 3rd term.

Well, Cleveland went on to be president. :)

I'm amazed Andrew Johnson went to the Senate. Johnson was nearly impeached primarily because he'd made either political or personal enemies of every important person in Congress.

Assuming Obama would not go to the Court as an Associate Justice, and assuming Roberts doesn't pull an Isaac Barrow, I would expect Obama to start a charitable foundation at a minimum. He'd make a great American emissary abroad, something like Tony Blair trying to serve as a go-between in Gaza (although if I were he I'd stay as far away from that part of the world as possible). The drone strikes prevent him from doing any good as an emissary to Islamic moderates -- too much innocent blood on his hands.

He'd do well to stay out of partisan politics at least for an election or two, and he's probably sick to death of that circus anyway.

Yeah, but members of Congress don't get to vote!

Only 3rd worst, all time, according to USSnooze.

Growing up in Tennessee, of course, we had to claim him as one of our own.... The elementary schools in my hometown were named Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, Jackson...and Johnson. Which one of these things is not like the others...?

Are you telling me there's no R. E. Lee or Jeff Davis? TN loses its south card.

And now, this.

East Tennessee never wanted to secede in the first place - can't grow cotton in the mountains, so there were hardly any slaves in that area anyway. It's because the state was so divided that it was the last to secede and the first to re-join. It's hilarious to go back to my hometown now and see all the "South Will Rise Again" garbage, since that area was so strongly pro-union throughout the war. I'm sure there were more soldiers from that area who fought for the Union than for the Confederacy.

But it's all good, because 'Murica.

West Virginia's the same way -- they broke away from Virginia to join the Union, but now it's full of stars and bars herpa-derps. Don't ask those people to check their own history; if it's not in the Gospels they aint read it.

Why didn't they use slaves in the mines? It worked for the Spanish.
