Campaign 2016 -- Don't Let the Perfect Become the Enemy of the Good

Re: Campaign 2016 -- Don't Let the Perfect Become the Enemy of the Good

Some people like Perry had no choice but to run again given their age and being out of office, but Christie screwed up IMO. He should have laid low and rebuilt support in New Jersey, then once he was term limited out of office in Jan of 2018 could have spent the next 2 years planning to run and raising funds unincumbered by his job. Provided the GOP lost, he'd only be in his late 50's running against presumably Hillary who'd be 73 and Dems would be going for 4th straight term which hasn't happened in almost 70 years. Especially if the GOP nominates a fire breather.

Maybe he's positioning himself for a spot as VP although that seems unlikely given his personality and you wouldn't want him to overshadow the actual nominee.

Christie had zero shot of making it out of the primaries and you know it. Faux was actively campaigning AGAINST him.

This surprises me, because Christie loves to talk the durr talk about Israel and Fox LOVES that. Fox' purpose is to serve the Republican party so perhaps they felt they needed to clear that lane for Bush. (I'm not counting the Southern Belle, who has no shot.)

Not to me. Trump is, at the end of the day, a carnival barker, and we've already elected one of those. Palin was a mirror of a large portion of America -- it confirmed that about one third of the humans inhabiting this country are imbeciles. That was soul-destroying for those of us who had faith that mankind has actually crawled a few feet from the slime in the last million years.

Here's the thing, Trump is a known commodity outside of the country (for better or worse). His presence in the media means he represents America to the outside world. People have seen him for years and will continue to see him after this is all over. I can't remember Palin making any overtly racist remarks (certainly she may have). But people outside of the US would readily associate him with rest of us because he has that recognizable name.

I'm struggling to come up with a household French name, but imagine if some European movie star ran against Le Pen. People would be far more likely to listen to a story about said star and their opinions than if a story was featuring Le Pen or his daughter.

It was probably smart for Christie not to wait. If he waits and the Republican wins then he's screwed. If he waits and Hillary wins, the 2020 election will be even tougher with the GOP's demographic death march, plus Hillary's negatives probably won't go any higher while her positives could jump if she has a successful first term. Add in that a Republican winning in 2016 can save the Court majority whereas by 2020 it may be too late. I think this is the election everybody should go all in, which is why the enormous field doesn't surprise me.

Bachmann? (maybe just a built in state bias there)

Not nearly as embarrassing to the country. But for Minnnesotans, yes.

We all kind of knew to basically pat her on the head and say, "That's nice dear, but mommy and daddy have to have a grown-up conversation now" while we ignored her.

The funny thing is, I think most of the country has already forgotten Bachmann, and most of those who remember her associate her with Iowa because of the straw poll and the incessant internet meme of she and her closeted husband deep throating corn dogs.

I think Minny dodged a bullet there. To the extent anybody thinks of Minny, they probably think either Al Franken or, I dunno, Prince.

They liked him until the hurricane. After he called them out for ripping him for being nice Obama (on the air) they turned on him. They were drooling over "Bridge-Gate" even more than MSNBC was. They want him gone.

I'd have thought he could win them back with his "shoot from the hip" act. They love that reptile brain crap.

So, who's their darling? Are they just going with the Bush royal succession?

I read a Scott Walker profile this morning (probably on Slate) that made me think he has a very "We report, you decide" kind of a disingenuous personality that some people will love.

More love for Walker. This time from the NY Times. He's got it all folks. Dems see him as a sheep instead of Wolf (God only knows why) . Lots of street cred with the GOP base. Passed anti-aborition, pro-gun, and union destroying legislation in a blueish state all while being elected 3 times in a row cause he was recalled.

Somewhere Jeb Bush is crying.

Dems see him as a sheep instead of Wolf (God only knows why).

Where I graze, at Kos and farther left, there's been a realization for years that Walker is at the sharp end of the plutocracy spear. With his backers he has virtually infinite funding, and a lot of his donors are smart -- these aren't the morons throwing their millions into Newt's or Cruz' vanity PACs. He exactly the opposite of the usual bomb thrower and a throwback to the old days of GOP dominance: he speaks in lulling platitudes while his actions are a radical betrayal of American traditions. He's like an uncharismatic Reagan: his motivation is to offer uncritical service to his paymasters as long as he gets to be the front man and harvest the applause.

He's made the most of the dog's breakfast so far, but really he is to the GOP what Kerry was to the Dems: well-heeled, doctrinaire, with a dull sheen to avoid attacks. Maybe the circular firing squad will let all the idiots take each other out and damage Jebbers! enough that he can sneak in there. But at the end of the day, the GOP runs on pure id, and Walker, paradoxically given how destructive he's been, doesn't feed that beast.
