Re: Campaign 2014: The Epic Struggle To Win The Senate And Change Nothing

But getting on a southern Dem's case in an election year for say siding with the NRA on some legislation that was never going to pass anyway is insane. For all their faults, no Dem Senator voted against the ACA, the most significant piece of liberal legislation in decades. That will most likely cost some of them their jobs. People who take the right vote no matter the political costs should be celebrated, not scorned.

I think if you followed the debate among them you'd see a healthy representation of your point of view, argued forcefully.

Purging moderates is counterproductive. So is vilifying purists. It takes both idealists and pragmatists to make a governing coalition.

Doesn't gerrymandering purge the moderate - from either party?

Doesn't explain the purge of moderates in the Senate, though.

Over time it could, since it would help build the careers of extremist Congressmen who then "graduate" to the Senate. I suppose it might also help move the rhetorical window for all candidates, which in turn would be picked up by Senate candidates.

This takes a bit of supposition, but it could. If people see a state government that's less and less representative of their beliefs, and also seeing that same thing happening in their federal voting district, they're likely to move to another state that's more inline with their beliefs, which is something we've been seeing in population shifts. With fewer of the opposition residing in the state, the Senators would be more likely to move towards one pole or the other.

That would be the primaries that bring out the most hard core and usually extremist voters. Delaware isn't a hotbed of conservatism and its AL Congressman was a moderate running for Senate, but Christine O'Donnell got the nomination. Only her people showed up on primary day.

I think "self-sort" is a lot more likely as a pull rather than a push. Moving is a pain in the neck. But I can definitely see it affecting where one would be willing to move, especially in retirement. The only GOP-heavy state I can imagine moving to is UT (it's so gorgeous it makes up even for the rampant LDS dumbfckery). There's no amount of money that would entice me to move to a political litter box like TX, MS, AL, OK, etc.

Can the President get an AG nominated and confirmed during the remaining days of this Congress??

The fun part is, Holder stays until a successor is confirmed, so if the Ted Cruz jackholes sincerely stand by their rhetoric of HURDURP MOS RACIS ATOORNEY GENRAL EVAR!!11! their usual circus act will only increase his tenure.

Obama should nominate Chuck D. If Fox & Fiends are going to act scared of every black dude, give them a black dude who'll really scare them.

I don't know why anyone who can't afford to donate the maximum permitted by law would even bother donating to a political party or campaign. If you aren't padding a candidate's coffers to the point that you can expect a bit of quid pro quo from that candidate once they're in office, then you might as well light that money on fire.
