Business, Economics, and Taxes: Eat Cereal for Dinner

Wow...could you sound more like a hipster there with the "I liked it before it was cool" post ;)
*glares at you judgmentally from behind his mug of Sumatran microlot pour-over*

Almost time for a kava seltzer and a couple of 'special' gummies. Naturally, I'm thinking about some sort of trendy, overpriced ancient grain for dinner. 😜

BTW Vegas is about half as busy as it normally would be for the first round of the NCAAs. The airport feels like it does on a summer Tuesday. Methinks a correction is coming...

I think within 4 month airline tickets are going to crash in price...hard!
Remember I wrote a few weeks ago that's what I'm banking on because I might be doing some international traveling in the Fall?

I expected the Super Bowl, F1, and Rd 1 NCAAs to fill out Vegas. That's insane.

Its fun to listen to cabbies/ride share drivers crap on F1...they friggin hate that Vegas set that up. Only thing they hate worse though is the coming baseball stadium. The Strip is going to be a disaster for like 3 years minimum.

My cabbie to the airport today said eggs cost like $20 a dozen right now there.

Speaking of Vegas…

First time I was ever there was as a tween- my parents fell for the “ Vegas is for families” marketing schtick.

We ran into George Forman after his weigh in (I believe it was vs Holyfield) and what a gem.

That is good right?

Apparently Tesla owners are worried their insurance will stop them soon.
Better do it now before trading in a Tesla becomes a crime too.

I've only been to Vegas once. My impressions at the time: the amusement park at Circus Circus was fun. And I thought Luxor was cool. Thoughts from a 9 year old in 1991.

We're planning to go next year for the Frozen Four, I'm not sure what to expect, it will certainly be different than my last trip.

Well Circus Circus is trash and the Luxor is cool on the outside but usually dirty and blah on the inside.

I will say this, if the economy is as bad as we all think it will be next year Vegas will either pull out all the stops to kiss the hockey fans butts or (more likely) ignore the hell out of it. I guess it will depend how basketball is going. If it is at the NHL Arena I fear how big of a cluster it will be...glad I never even thought about going.

Aging properties like Luxor and Excalibur will have cheap rooms anytime MGM and Caesars really need to put butts in slot seats.

The biggest question for Vegas is what happens to conference and convention revenue. When a major recession hits, that will tank. Customers are a lot less likely to spend $3000+/pp on a ticket, a flight, and a room to send employees out there if they're also faced with reducing department headcount. If customers aren't there, there's no reason for sponsors and partners to send as many sales staff to shake hands and hawk their services. It'll have a cascading effect.

Vegas is great if you go for at most 2 days once every few years. Basically short and infrequent enough that you can turn off your brain and enjoy the flashiness and ignore how very very thin its veneer is. Any longer of a stay or more frequent trips and it becomes clear how trashy it is.

My wife and I were there for the hockey tournament in January 2020 when Cornell was playing. Friday to Sunday we did one of the MGM towers and it was a nice room, albeit no theme, just a nice room. Our flight out Sunday got cancelled (thanks Frontier!) so we had to scramble to find a hotel room Sunday night before flying out Monday morning and there was an Excalibur room for $25. Granted we just needed somewhere to sleep for 6 hours and then leave, but it was definitely a $25 room. But it's funny how places like Excalibur put literally all of their budget into the exterior and then the interior makes absolutely no attempt to continue the theme.

I thought there used to be more theming back in the 90s, when Vegas was trying to do the "bring the family" thing, but much of it was stripped out when they were turned into budget properties for Ma & Pa Kettle.

When my wife worked for Ryan Air we made it out to Vegas twice. Once when Brandy Chastain had the GW PK for the WWC, and that same year over Thanksgiving. Enjoyed it for what it was at the time, but once the kids came I just never had the appetite for it again. But I get the allure and don't think it's crazy why so many people have a good time there.

You have that correct. Excalibur is not owned by MGM or Caesars though...one of the few left. That place is extra awful.

There was a convention at Harrahs this weekend...very weird crowd not the usual convention folks I see when I am there. I think that started tanking even before the election because Vegas was getting stupid with the pricing.

Look I love Vegas, its a nice easy way to get out of town on the cheap if you do it right. But you can totally track the economy based on Vegas. When places like the Golden Nugget are charging Strip prices for rooms a correction is imminent.

Speaking of conventions, even though Comdex is one of the largest which Vegas hosts there (heck, probably the only city that can handle such a convention that large), I always heard it was not great for the casinos. But it was great for the strip clubs. :ROFLMAO:
