Except all of those people are on other SM platforms that allow for the same thing so if the plan is to destroy Twitter to protect the powerful they are basically offsetting that on their own.

And none of those are as huge, or had the widespread presence that twitter did. Like it or not, it was THE place to voice your opinion.

And probably even still is, despite the Musky odor that now permeates it.

So, if I am following things they wanted to destroy twitter cause it was the big dick on the playground?

Well, if that's the case mission accomplished. It's already toast.

Pretty much. As this paragraph from the NYT shows, they don't want to have to face criticism for their horrible takes. They don't really mean 'Americans' as the term means, the mean the 'important people'.

For all the tolerance and enlightenment that modern society claims, Americans are losing hold of a fundamental right as citizens of a free country: the right to speak their minds and voice their opinions in public without fear of being shamed or shunned.

Hard to believe anyone with a brain is still on, other than to point and laugh.

I don't know where they go. I mean, I'm here.

I think it's because still, even after the damage that has been done, is that it's the best medium to track breaking news and sports. Reddit comes closest, but you're basically splitting 75% of the users.

Most of the poeple I follow have migrated to Bluesky. THe only ones remaining or on other platforms are related to college hockey.

I have a pretty well built up Twitter following list made of Chicagoland traffic / construction updates (IDOT and Tollway do a great job of posting updates, as do some of the local media) and sports. That sports following us the biggest chunk as its college and pro.

I have a Mastadon, but that seems to be more the political / history writers who made a first attempt at finding a Twitter life boat. I haven't been lucky to get a BlueSky account, but that seems to have had the wind sucked from it by Threads.

Threads has the most volume of people I follow on Twitter but there are glaring omissions. It's also weird because I'm not a content creator but Instagram was the closest I came to attempting. And blending who I follow on Instagram with who I follow on Twitter into one follow list (Threads) is still a smidge weird.

Some of the writers for sports I follow haven't made the move, or they havent fully bought into a new platform yet (but Threads made the best effort).

When the brands start bailing en mass is when the lights go out on Twitter. Also, whoever can get sports/news on a chronological timeline the fastest.

Want a bluesky code?

Want a bluesky code?

Sure! What's one more social media app I'll forget about in a week.

*edit* I think we're mutuals on the app formerly known as Twitter so you should be able to slide into my DMs there. I think threads too, but you can't DM on threads.

But if they wanted to avoid criticism you dont destroy one and migrate to the others. (while also still posting on the one you are destroying BTW) You destroy and then bask in the lack of criticism. That would be like saying "I hate Chinese Food!" so you get your local place down...whilst still eating at other Chinese Food restaurants.

Plus, again, basic logic. If Twitter goes down people aren't just going to quit, they are going elsewhere. The majority aren't going to go to some niche site like Mastodon or Bluesky either, they will en masse find somewhere to go. This stuff isn't going away just because Twitter is imploding. Tik Tok and Insta have the numbers to lap it anyways and no one is shutting those down. And all of these powerful people are on Tik Tock and Insta BTW.

Sorry but that sounds like the opinion of people trying to rationalize why Musk and his fascist buddies are making stupid decisions. Its like Trump most of the time there is no design behind anything they are doing. It is all because they lack impulse control. He thinks he is making the correct decisions, in part because everyone tells him he is and in part because he is a POS egomaniac. There is not some grand design it is all the actions of people way out of their league making decisions that they don't have the knowledge base to make. He doesn't think about consequences to his moves, he doesn't worry about fallout, because at the end of the day if Twitter shuts down it won't affect his bottom line. So he just does what he thinks sounds cool and then when it blows up in his face he just flips to the next bad decision that everyone will tell him is brilliant. Same thing he did with Tesla and his stupid rocket that exploded.

The name change is the ultimate proof. "X" has been his holy grail since the friggin 90s! It was how he was ousted at PayPal. Turning Twitter into X was never his original plan no matter how much he might pretend it was now. Its his hail mary because nothing else is working, a way to take eyes off his bad decision. (like the Tesla Truck he keeps promising every 6 months) Twitter is not set up to be the hub he wants and if he was half as smart as he pretends he is he would know that...hell it barely functions now as a SM platform. Investors might buy his dog and pony show but the people who need to actually make the site work aren't. He is a moron, he knows nothing about the business...that is why it is failing.

Could somebody please distinguish "Chicagoland" from Chicago for me? Is it very small like a neighborhood? Is it a bit larger, like a borough? Is it even larger than Chicago, like "the tri state Metropolitan area" is for NYC? Does it have socioeconomic or ethnic connotations?

The f-ck does it mean?

It's the metro area.

Where are you from?
Chicago
Oh, where in Chicago?
Aurora

Yeah Chicagoland seems to be all of Cook County. People in Romeoville and Joliet pretend they live in Chicago.

I am so out of the loop - I had never heard the term "bluesky" until this thread today.

I think it was mentioned earlier in this thread, but before that I had not.

There are worse things than not being up to date on the iPacifier.

Edit: yes, Handy and dx discussed it in this thread on July 6.

"Chicagoland" covers quite a large land area. Basically it's the reach of the broadcast TV channels. Within that area you have contiguous urban sprawl with farmland encroaching on the outer 1/3.

For reference I currently live in Manhattan, IL. As the crow flies, I'm. 40-42 miles SW of Downtown Chicago. I'm basically at the crossroads of "rural" and "Suburb". If you go either South or West of me, you are fully into farm country (300-1,500 person towns with 3,000-5,000 person "big towns"). To the North and/or East you have pure suburbs.

AP is a similar distance from the Loop, but straight West. Again, basically where continuous urban sprawl finally fades into farmland. If you head North or Northwest, the sprawl creeps out a bit and flirts with the 60 mile mark.

So basically think of half a circle centered on Downtown Chicago with a 40-60 mile radius extending straight South, West, and North.

Edit: The city itself extends 15 miles South of Downtown, 13 miles North, and 9 miles West.

bluesky is the project the guy who created Twitter started after he sold it. It has basically been in invite/beta mode for quite some time and was at one time going to be the "savior" for all the people leaving Twitter. Problem is it hasn't gone anywhere of value and Jack doesn't seem to keen to make it widespread any time soon. It will never be anything more than a niche service at this point because Zuck stole his thunder.

And the stupid thing is all of these clowns are worthless fascist dickweeds. Jack says a lot of the same crap Elmo does and we know Zuck is scum. People care too much about the whims of tech bros who are, at the core, about taking every dime they can as democracy burns.
