Article talks about how exploits to remote control vehicles have been around since 2013 or earlier.

It is presumably not breaking any laws to say we were being briefed on negotiations between car companies and three letter USG agencies for them using this as an offensive tactic as early as the early 2010s. Not only was this in the pipeline long before it made the press, plans to use it for law enforcement and "urban pacification" were also percolating long before the first smarty pants tech writer thought he had a scoop.

TIL an E-1 starting salary is $23k.

Holy crap. I cannot imagine how badly your life must be to enlist.

And yes, you get three hots and a cot, but you also face live fire every time a Republican needs a bump in the polls.

And a general is only $200K. I mean, at that point I'm assuming it's the other perks and the pension that you're going for.

A rinky dink general doesn't really get much, but when you get up there with the serious desk commanders it's C-suite level booze and girls.

The cash out is where it's at. Dr. Mrs & I have a friend from MS. His first civilian job was cleaning at fish cannery when he was 18 in 1990, for minimum wage. He rose to full bird AF colonel and a cyber expert. He cashed out after a 30-year career, so he has that full pension. Now, his second civilian job at an IT company has a $500k base salary, before starting considering his other, real compensation. I think he's my first friend pulling down at least $1M a year in real value, although some of my dorm mates from freshman year who went to Silicon Valley may be there too. (I am a Poor by the standards of my dorm.)

I have a cousin who retired as an Lt Colonel from the Air Force. I don't think he is making that kind of money but he is definitely doing well. Because he piloted those big refuelers, he was able to jump basically to the top as a pilot for UPS. Flies their 747 flagships regularly making laps of the Pacific and occasionally to Dubai and Cologne. He takes nice vacations to Tahoe, Alaska, Hawaii, etc. He has the perks from retiring from the Air Force and will get likely significant perks once retired from UPS which should be in the next couple years.

Pilots used to (60s, 70s) have legendary perks -- pretty much free travel and lodging all over the world. I don't know if the MBAs destroyed that when they destroyed the airline industry.

Huh, I probably see him a lot.

Given the cost of living I think it’s a lot better deal now than it was in the past.
