Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Saturday/Sunday afternoon series with North Dakota 2 pm each day..

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

I hope the Sioux keep it clean this time unless they want to take majors and game misconducts. That would be okay, too.

For what it's worth the "Sue" played surprisingly "clean" against the Gophers this past weekend, and for the most part played very good defense, keeping the Gophers' scoring chances below what I was expecting (and hoping for). They also generated way more very excellent scoring opportunities of their own, but fortunately we had Nora in goal...otherwise the result in each game could have been very different.

My advice to UMD would be to not take the sweep for granted...

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Just like the Mankato series, I'll only see the second game live over the net.... more basketball to shoot on Saturday...

Careful what you wish for; it's nice to get the 5-minute PP, but if one of your players is injured by the infraction, it is a poor trade.:(

They had one freshman involved in far more than her share of questionable contact away from the puck. Other than that, I'd agree with you.

I'm guessing that because the Finns for MSU and UM are leaving Friday, the Bulldogs will be w/o Touminen and Posa this weekend as well. That would be my only concern were I a UMD fan. Otherwise, I don't think the Sioux can generate enough offense to spring the upset.

That is correct. Tuominen's also going to do a blog like thing on the UMD page.

I too hope that UMD focuses their attention on this week's opponent!! It seems like it's often the case that when a team does "lose" a key player the team bands together in a way that it wouldn't have other wise. I've seen it with nearly all of the teams in the league. It should make the next month more interesting all the way around.

In our case, a 5 minute powerplay.. I'd rather decline the penalty and play even strength with a better chance of scoring. Still don't want anyone hurt of course.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

This will be a dumb question to some, but I'm a dumb guy...

What exactly are these "chalk talks" and what do they do there? I see there's one next Thursday up at Blackwoods in Proctor to talk about the series with the Gophers. Does the coach just stand up and talk? Questions and answers? Worth going to?

And a silent auction during the Gopher series with signed jerseys from current and former players. Dammit. Why do they do this to me?

I'm not sure I'd call ya a dumb guy.. I know people considered 'smart' by lots of people who couldn't pick up a D-SLR and have a clue what to do with it.

If I had the money I'd have a couple of those jerseys by now..

Everyone who goes to Chalk Talks always comes away saying it was a blast, and a great way to get to know players, fans, and even coaches.. I've never gotten to one (they used to be more than 2 a season but always on Thursday nights when I played basketball but that ended this year) and won't see this one because of shooting high school hockey that night.

I go to them most of the time. dhmn has it pretty much right . . . it's socializing with coach and players, ususally coach will talk a bit about how the season's going, and plans moving for the final push . . . . and she takes questions. Also, one or two of the players usually say a thing or two (seniors usually at this time of year).

Mostly, it's a relaxed environment for the players, coaches and fans to get to know one another. For me, I always try to go to the first one so I can get what knick-name to put on my goalie sign.

I've always had a good time. Oh, sometimes there are trivia prizes or door prizes awarded - UMD memorobilia, shirts, etc . . .

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Also, current team Captain Saara Tuominen will blog about her Olympic experience and you can view it through the UMD website:

http://www.umdbulldogs.com/news.php?id=4818

Mark your calendars for another Chalk Talk on February 4 at 6:30pm at Blackwoods in Proctor.* Players and coaches will be on hand to discuss the season, and the upcoming series against the Gophers.* Spread the word and I hope we'll have a great turnout.*

The team is off to North Dakota for hopefully four more important league points! Go 'Dogs!

Best, Coach McAteer
Here are the details about Tuominen's blog and the "Chalk Talk" from Mac's email. Binny and dhmn have summed it up well. It's a social event. Miller is pretty direct in answering questions, and of course is rooting for Canada!
Good chance to visit with the players and get to know them. Several of the former players in the area are good friends, and have a few brews together now and then. One still has my fishing boat on pretty much permanent loan!:)

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

To look ahead a few weeks to the first round of WCHA playoffs.. the UMD men are home this year against Minnesota the weekend OF the WCHA playoffs.. I'd really like to see the best of 3 and hope they don't move it up to MARS (or over to Wesman) like they did in the past... I realize that attendance mightl be hurt a little they do a Friday afternoon game, but with the UMD/Gopher series in Duluth the attendance isn't going to draw more by having it elsewhere.. and maybe they could get some of the other crowd Friday afternoon. (maybe..)

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Found out tonight that.. the women's playoff series will be played at Heritage Center at the same time as the men's games with the Goofs... It will be really nice when we have TWO ice sheets at the DECC.. we could run back and forth between two games ;)

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

I don't know what they take away from a sweep like this, but the Dogs take it 5-0 today. Friddy ends up with four points and Tara Gray scored twice (?), but a sweep is a sweep and it's home against the Gophers next weekend. CAN'T WAIT!

There's not a lot you take away from sweeping the last place team other than "winning the games you should" .. and team more confidence that Steck can play if needed, with 2 wins in 2 starts.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

I'd say four points in the standings is fairly important for the bulldogs at this stage, with a seven point gap and twelve points up for grabs.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Okay, here's one: Will the Gophers miss Raty more this weekend than the Dogs miss Tuominen and Posa? I say yes. The Gophers are good, no question, but I don't think they're seven points better than the Bulldogs. If Harss brings her "A" game to the DECC, I don't see the Gophers beating us.

I don't think Raty being gone will affect them THAT much.. Grogan is 23-3-2 in her 2 year career. She gave up 3 goals on 48 shots against Mankato after not playing since she swept Ohio State 3 weeks earlier.

It's not like Tomcikova in Bemidji, where McElhinney has pretty much been a spectator without much big game experience.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

No. You're wrong. Grogan will choke, the Gophers will fall apart and the Bulldogs will crush them both nights. You heard it here first.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

:D If only! The best thing is.. ARM, CrazyDave and Brooky are all probably on the highway heading north already!
